The Dark Eye - Conspiracy of Mages

ADD TO WISHLIST >

After years of homework, tests, and a life dedicated to becoming the best mage who ever graduated from the prestigious Lowangen Academy of Transformation, you now face one last hurdle: the final exam. Today you demonstrate your mastery of the arcane arts—at least, that’s what you expected when you awoke this morning. Now you are not so sure.

Your professors wield unimaginable power and command great respect in society, yet all is not well. Some cast envious eyes upon each other’s achievements and status, and a foul plan is afoot. Without even trying, you stumble into a web of intrigue and treachery that threatens to ruin the school’s reputation and end your career before it even starts.

Something sinister haunts these learned halls. As a young student of magic facing an unexpected challenge, can you solve this mystery and still manage to graduate?

Conspiracy of Mages is a solo adventure for The Dark Eye® RPG. This book includes a pregenerated character and all necessary rules. For more about the world of The Dark Eye®, see the Core Rules, the Aventurian Bestiary, and the Aventuria Almanac.

Adventure awaits!

I found a few errors in the clickable version -- the link from section 151 to section 62 isn't clickable, and the link from section 116 to section 17 leads to section 97 instead. The circle next to section 199 (to mark that you've been there before) is also not clickable.

The biggest editorial problem, however, is one that affects both versions. One of the crucial choices in section 100 is very easy to miss because it's on the next page, separate from the rest of the section. Furthermore, the next-to-last option, which is at the bottom of the page, tells you where to turn if you've run out of time. Thus, it's easy to assume that this is the end of the section. I played through the book twice, exhausting every option (or so I thought), without getting anywhere. I half-suspected that there was a missing link that made the book impossible to finish. It was only when I created a spreadsheet to systematically track every choice in every section that I discovered the one that I'd overlooked.

I was completely convinced that the book was broken until I read Matthew R's comment. It is impossible to tell that there's another option when looking at section 100, so you always end up running out of time.

In a sense the adventure is broken, because there's no way to tell that option exists (you're actively trying to avoid reading anything more than necessary, after all).

Oh my god, I wish I would have read this comment earlier. I bought this after erading the Vampire of Havena and was utterly disappointed by only finding dead ends for hours

Gosh, I was in a similar pickle and followed the solution trail backwards. Couldn't find a link into the bottleneck section (because that's a puzzle) and thought the solution was unreachable. A pretty nasty layout fail and a big thanks to Matthew for clearing it up. (Ulisses: fixing it is as easy as inserting 'continued on next page' in whatever font fits...)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
