100 Cold Wilderness Locations

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fully describing every geographical feature of a world is not always easy, and this supplement provides 100 different wilderness locations that can be dropped in. The locations are intended to be placed in cold and arctic climes, and range in size from small locations up to oceans, from plains to mountains.

Each location is given a name that it would be known by and also some details on what makes this location unique or interesting, which tends to be related to the name.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Glimmering Valley: Three sides of this cove valley are surrounded by steep walls of rock, with only a narrow gap between the protruding ridges allowing access in the fourth side. The rock is frequently covered in snow and ice, and when the sun rises in the morning the light catches the ice on the sides and minute ice crystals in the air, causing the valley to look as if it is filled with glimmering motes of light. A beautiful show, but one that can be dazzling if stared at for too long.
  • Graven River: This river is usually dry and water only fills it when the winter snows start to melt. When the river is dry, the rocks on the bed can be more easily seen. Most are normal but the river takes its name from the unusual boulders that do not appear to match the other rocks of the area. These boulders have strange markings on them that appear to have been carved into the rock rather than formed naturally, although if they are a language it isn’t one easily recognised.
  • Gypsum River: The water of this river has a strong mineral taste that is unpleasant on the tongue but not dangerous to drink. There are usually small bits of ice on the river’s surface but the mineral content means that the river only tends to freeze over in the coldest of winters. This makes it a popular water source for animals, both predator and prey, and travellers, as it is one of the few places almost guaranteed to have water.
  • Hell’s Beach: This beach is covered in several layers of cobbles. The cobbles are blackened and cracked, as if they were exposed to extreme heat. The beach and the nearby water, always remain free of frost, ice and snow, no matter what the temperature and even if everything else in the area is buried several feet deep in snow. The cobbles do not feel noticeably warm to the touch, nor does the temperature of the beach feel any warmer than it should but, somehow, they keep water from freezing.
  • Heresiarch’s Hogbacks: These high, stony and very cold mountains are where the leader of a heresy and his closest acolytes fled after he was defeated in a conflict with the adherents of the mainstream religion and most of his followers were wiped out. The cold, stony mountains have very little in the way of game or edible food, and it is believed that the heretics died out quickly after they arrived, as none were ever seen again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
