Root: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game is based on the award-winning Root: A Game of Woodland Might & Right board game. In Root: The TTRPG, players take on the roles of vagabonds in the Woodland, adventuring from clearing to clearing and through the forest while a war rages in the background. You take on jobs for Woodland denizens, maybe dealing with nearby bandits or a dangerous bear, but you also take on jobs for the factions involved in the war. The Marquise de Cat might ask you to undermine the Eyrie Dynasties' advance into a nearby clearing, and the Eyrie Dynasties might ask you to kidnap an important leader of the Marquisate. Your actions will reshape the Woodland, and you will gain prestige or notoriety with the different factions to mark your relationships with them.

Root: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game is based on the Powered by the Apocalypse framework, with all new rules designed to help you play a game of Woodland adventure. This quickstart includes everything you need to play a few sessions of the game, such as:

  • Basic moves and rules to play
  • Six vagabond playbooks
  • Special weapon moves for combat
  • Map and clearing generation systems
  • A faction system to represent the war

This quickstart isn't the full game, and will undergo changes, refinements, and adjustments with playtesting. Make sure you check out the Kickstarter, live on September 17th, right here:

The B&W Playbooks are not up to date with the Playbooks in the Quickstart portion. Scoundrel's It's Distraction mentions Blindside instead of Murder for example.

Judging from the date at the end of the PDF file, it seems that Scoundrel's "It's Distraction" has been updated/revamped to Blindside instead of Murder.

No, Root the TTRPG is based on Powered by the Apocalypse and doesn't use minis for any of its rules. (Root, the board game this RPG is based on, uses lots of pieces and stuff like that, however.)

What affect does your species have? Bird, mouse, rabbit, etc- I don't see any.

Hi Chad- Choice of species has no mechanical effect on the rules or combat (please see my reply to a similar question below), nor does it necessarily determine any political or economical associations. For example, even though the setting describes foxes as generally known for their metalworking and former major suppliers of coin and arms to the Eyrie Dynasty, not every fox character is required to have that skillset or background. On the flip side of that, characters of other species may choose to identify as a blacksmith.

How does armor work? Weapons and weapon skills are discussed, but no mention is given to how armor works.

You have probably seen this by now but when you take damage that your armor would be able to block you can mark one box of decay on the armor instead of marking injury on yourself. It's in the equipment section just before the playbooks.

Do bird character fly in this setting? Is that represented in any of the Moves?

I doubt it? There usually aren't a ton of rules for movement in powered by the apocalypse

Bird characters can, in general, fly—and so too can squirrels climb, moles dig, otters swim, and so on. The moves treat all those similarly. If you’re just doing it, with no pressure or uncertainty, then it just happens! You just do it. But if you're in a situation where there is uncertainty—say, when a fox soldier is shooting arrows at you, or you’re raising another bird to the top of a tree—that’s where you can bring in a move for which the trigger fits the situation!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
