Dear Friend,

It has always been rumored that there are tunnels running under the campus of Miskatonic University. Long have students and faculty alike speculated about the strange possibility that these tunnels exist--and yet no one has ever proven their existence. Many have speculated that the tunnels were originally built for use by the faculty more easily and quickly move about campus, but I hardly believe that to be true. Others think it is a remnant from the Civil War--something the south had dug. Again, I disagree. Further, students have whispered about a far more sinister origin for the tunnels. 

This is the theory I agree with. My research and investigation into the case brings me to the conclusion that the tunnels were made like a labyrinth--something once used by a cult to summon and harness unimaginable horrors from another world. Now, it acts as a prison for those secrets. That is why I need you. I have found an old and incomplete blueprint which reveals the entrance to the tunnels. 

That’s where you come in. I want you to go down and investigate, find clues to what happened there, and map out the tunnels for me.

Hi Noah,

I am in the process of putting a short FAQ together for myself regarding the One Page Cthulhu games and (sorry) I have a few more questions to clarify:

(1) Can the Character eat and drink as much as they like between rooms? I think I have asked this before but I just want to check as I have been, so far, replenishing as many associated attributes as possible to their maximum before I go into the next room. So, for example, I drink/eating as much as I have available. Is this acceptable?

(2) Can you clarify the Shoggoth Absorb attack in ‘The Miskatonic Tunnels’: on a roll of 5 or 6 on 1D6 the Shoggoth makes a Melee Attack with a Damage of 5 to the Character but what is the +1HP? Does this mean the Character looses a further HP (i.e. 6HP) or the Shoggoth has 1HP added back to its current HP?

1) Yes, you can use as many consumable items as you wish in between rooms.

2) The shoggoth gains +1HP back to its health when it does the absorb attack.

Hello Noah, just a few more questions for clarification (sorry!)

1) If I successfully sneak past a monster, I assume I do not roll on the Investigation/Reward Table as I have not cleared the room/killed the monster?

2) I recently rolled up a Beer on the Investigation Table, which adds to my Sanity Points. Can I drink this Beer between rooms to build up my Sanity before entering the next room? For example, I have 2 Sanity Points and, after successfully clearing a room, I investigate and get a Beer. I roll 1D6 and get a 4 and divide by 2 to get 2 Sanity Points. I drink the beer between rooms so my Sanity now goes up to 4. OR do I have to wait to lose the 2 Sanity Points and drink the Beer to restore them?

3) With the above in mind, can you add to your initial Body, Mind and Spirit score as the game progresses or are they fixed from the point of creation? For example, I allocate 3 to Body so Body can never, regardless of game actions, go over 3?

James, I'm happy to answer any questions you have. It is part of my work as a designer.

1) Correct. You will not roll on the Investigation/Reward table in this instance.

2) You can use any items on your character in between rooms.

3) You can "Level Up" in-between plays by visiting Miskatonic University as described in the section on Leveling. This can bring your base scores up.

4) Yes, the monster is dead and can't fight back.

Hello,

Thank you for your replies from a while back, they were most helpful. I haven’t played the game in a while and have recently started again – I just wanted to check that I was playing it correctly. Do you mind reading and checking the brief playthrough below?

I am playing a Private Detective with a Body of 3, Mind of 2 and Spirit of 1. He is equipped with a Handgun (Ranged/Damage 4). He is wearing a Trench Coat with an Armour Rating of 2 and has 15 Health Points.

On his first Populate Room roll, he encounters a High Priest and tries to Sneak past. He rolls against his Mind of 2 minus the High Priest’s Level of 1 meaning he rolls 1D6 instead of 2D6. His 1D6 roll results in a 2, a Fail and so has to fight the High Priest. The Detective makes a Horror Check by rolling his Mind Dice Pool (2D6) minus the Level 1 of High Priest. The roll of the 1D6 results in a 6 and so the Detective gains Initiative and therefore acts first.

Hey there, short question: How much Clues does a spell cost? Is the Cost of the spell the Lore Cost, the Sanity Cost or both combined? I have not yet found an answer to this in the game.

The only way to lose a dot in a skill is to roll poorly on the level up chart in between "dungeons." When you do roll poorly, you would literally lose the dot. Erase it from the character sheet.

Hello, I am very new to this type of gaming and would like to ask some questions to clarify the rules - sorry if they are a little obvious!

(1) In 'Character Creation' when assigning each Skill a rating of 1,2 or 3 am I assigning these actual values across the three Skills (for example, Body: 3, Mind:1 and Spirit 2) or am I assigning up to 3 across the Skills (for example, Body: 3, Mind: 2 and Spirit:3)?

(2) In 'Items and Spells' the rule's state "You may also buy Items from the Item Table below..." How am I buying the Items and Spells? Am I spending what is left over from the Clues after buying Weapons and Outerwear (but 'Clues' states that "You can spend clues on weapons and outerwear" but does not state Items and Spells)?

(3) Also, with Items, is the Sandwich, Steak Meal, Beer, and Whiskey also "one use items" i.e. I buy 1 sandwich, 'eat it' and that is it or can I buy 1 sandwich and eat it as many times as I like throughout the game (so I...See more

Thanks for the questions. Never feel afraid to ask for clarification:
(1) You assign those actual numbers 1, 2, and 3 to the skills. (for example, Body: 3, Mind:1 and Spirit 2)
(2) You spend leftover Clues on items and spells. The only way to get a spell is to buy the item that gives you one.
(3) All items are a one-time use. You have to buy multiple to get the benefit again.
(4) You can use items in between rooms and combats to buff up before the next fight.
(5) This is correct. 4, 5, and 6 are always your target for success. By NOT rolling these on ANY of the dice in your dice pool you fail and are forced to fight.
Hope that helps you. And don't worry about asking questions. Even seasoned gamers have to ask sometimes. (and some designers like myself may not always write the rules 100% clearly either).

What is the difference between room 1 and 6? Just the shape? Are only rooms 2, 4 and 6 meant to be populated and 1, 3 and 5 are connecting tunnels? Thanks

1 and 6 are indeed the same, just a different shape. All "Rooms" are the same and are expected to be populated. In future volumes, some monsters, weapons, and rules might be affected by the difference between a corridor and room.

There's a bit of a problem there with the intro on page 1 -- the part about the civil war ends abruptly in an incomplete sentence (something about "...the south..."). Suggestion: Either finish the sentence or delete the entire thing to avoid confusing people.

The typo has been corrected. It seems in transferring the text from the working draft over to the completed one, a piece of the sentence got clipped. Thanks for pointing it out. A few rules typos also have been updated.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
