This pamphlet was intended to add flavor to any campaign without creating overpowering skills or mechanics. Very often, new classes are game breaking and I have sought to avoid this.

Initially, the plan was to create one section for Basic D&D and another for AD&D. Since the Swashbuckler does not require extraordinary abilities, nor do they have level dependant skills, I was able to combine the two.

It had occurred to me to give the Swashbuckler some of the skills of thieves, paladins, monks and acrobats but these characters are not the type to engage in professional level skills. They are more charismatic enablers, they don’t develop useful professional skills, they capitalize on other people’s skills.

I would encourage DMs and players to play towards the humorous aspects of Errol Flynn shenanigans. Many times, this style of play revolves around the needed belief in success rather than the actual outcome. Swashbuckling success features going to Plan B, then C and D and so on.

This product contains two files, the character class description suitable for D&D and AD&D, plus a set of 6 pre-generated characters.

I remember both the player's guide to thieves and the guide to fighters having swashbucklers included - the sooner more the trickster kind à la Zorro, the later more the soldier kind à la D'Artagnan ...

I was always jealous of my friends with AD&D 2.0. Back in the day, we had no effective internet and figuring out where those brown Complete books were supposed to go was confusing and expensive. Sometimes they seemed to work with AD&D 1.0, but other times they didn't. It didn't help that Dragon Lance muddied the waters by, for the most part, working with AD&D 1.0 and 2.0.

The Swashbuckler class presented here is geared to OSR and AD&D 1.0. As compared to the Complete series of books (Complete Fighter, Complete Thief, etc.), this version of the Swashbuckler has many lacks. He is not exactly a fighter and completely lacks any thieving abilities.

It is a totally different take on the fun loving, Errol Flynn type character. Like the 2.0 Fighter/Swashbuckler, they out style an opponent as opposed to outclassing them with combat skills. There are new and interesting mechanics for them, which I felt does not diminish thieves or fighting men. Combat wise they can match thieves,...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
