Urban Shadows: Berlin (1st Ed.)

The Pale Empress Beckons.

Berlin is a city of contrasts: Politics, celebrities, and luxury are just as much a part of the city as alternative districts, the May riots, and cheap shop and restaurant chains. Big companies and innovative start-ups open their offices to acclaim, yet neighborhood protests can keep an internet giant from developing a new campus in Berlin. While many ambitious building projects are realizeds, the new airport is always behind schedule. The constant modernization of apartment buildings in the last few years have caused rents to rise astronomically, driving the formers occupants out.

In the supernatural world, Berlin has become one of the hot spots of Europe, but the reunification of the city also caused conflicts between various groups. The open hostilities between the Night and Power factions, in particular, led to the rise of a group of hunters and agents of the Mortality faction who gave the other factions a choice: stop the fighting and keep a low profile or face a war with professional and well-armed hunters. While an uneasy ceasefire between the factions was achieved, the dream of ruling the supernatural world of Berlin still remains.

Thus, there are always newcomers trying to establish their power base in the city, challenging the established order; the city seems to be a nexus drawing in supernatural beings from all over Europe. All these attempts to break the status quo are met with the same reaction: swift and hard retribution from the currently dominant faction. While the leaders of the city cannot agree on much else, none of them is interested in new competition.

Urban Shadows: Berlin is a full city guide for the German city of Berlin in the world of Urban Shadows, an urban fantasy tabletop roleplaying game in which mortals and monsters vie for control of a modern-day city. In Berlin, the characters will confront some of the most powerful actors in Europe—The Nosferatu, The Pale Empress, The Chess Club, and the Collective—all seizing on the reuinified Berlin as a gateway to greater power.

This city guide includes:

  • A complete accounting of the supernatural factions of Berlin, including new NPCs and faction issues for you to use in your game
  • A brief history of Berlin, along with new city moves and city images to make Berlin feel real
  • Three new Threats that can be dropped into any campaign, each featuring a different central antagonist, a full countdown clock, and new custom moves

Urban Shadows makes use of the same rules-light engine as Apocalypse WorldMonsterhearts, and Dungeon World—while drawing on fiction as diverse as The WireThe Dresden Files, and The Shield—to create a game of urban politics and supernatural drama. Packed with mechanics that create hard choices and meaningful fiction, this game is easy for new players to learn and complex enough to play again and again.

Berlin lies at the center of everything. What will you make of it?

Great content! Feels very fleshed out with great personalities.

Only big disappointment is that there isn't a map of Berlin, unlike for all the cities in Dark Streets.

Great document with factions of the city fleshed out, three threats-clock plots and major personalities of the city. Excellent addition for Urban Shadows or other modern-supernatural games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
