Enter the world of Usagi Yojimbo! Stan Sakai's award-winning comic series tells the story of  Miyamoto Usagi, a swordsrabbit with the heart of a hero, as he wanders a fantastic version of 17th-century Japan.  Now, Sakai's Japan and its cast of anthropomorphic characters come to life in stories you write yourself. Explore immense castles and humble villages; meet bounty-hunters and crime bosses; battle ninja spies and scheming lords; and encounter monsters from beyond the natural world.

  • Complete game in one volume: This latest edition of Usagi has been updated and revised with material from over thirty years of award-winning Usagi comics.
  • Character creation: Take on the role of a fearless samurai, a crafty ninja, a wise priest, or other adventurer in fantasy Japan.
  • Rich story: Immerse yourself in a richly-detailed world with valiant Usagi, sly Kitsune, gruff Gennosuke, clever Ishida, and other heroes from the comics.
  • Thrilling Adventure: Face the challenges of Usagi's world: violent bandits and criminal overlords; corrupt lords and dreadful schemers; maleficent sorcerers and foul demons; and more!
  • Powered by the Apocalypse: easy to learn, but full of complex choices. A roll of the dice makes the difference between safe & sure... or bold & dangerous!
  • Work together: A unique system of story, support, and setback points helps you and your fellow players pool your resources, bolster each other, and face your challenges as a group.

To play this game, you will need two six-sided dice, counters, and a sense of adventure. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Has the PoD version gotten any errata fixes or is it still a jumbled mess?

I just discovered that the last item in the download list entitled Usagi_2e_character_sheet_18-Mar-2021.pdf is, in actual fact the updated rules PDF, so the one I've been looking ta is woefully out of date. Hopefully a number of the errors have been fixed. Let's see...

Sadly, no. There are only two fixes that I can see. The More Adventures chapter has been added to the index. Also another error that I missed on my initial readthrough, but by sheer coincidence, caught just before I discovered the misnamed, updated rule book file yesterday. Page 30, Column 2 header - did read 'Impaired Story' and they have now fixed it to read 'Impaired Support'. All other errors that I listed below, including the 'Time' paragraph that ends mid-sentence that was mentioned in this forum pretty much as soon as the book was published still remains unfixed.

Following on from an earlier post I've made a note of errors I've encountered whilst reading through the book. The following are just from the first 18 pages, the Introduction and Rules sections. I'm not an editor, neither do I have any qualifications in English study but these are the glaring errors I've noticed and I hope they help you in polishing and refining this otherwise excellent book.

A roll of 10 or better usually gets you want (should be 'what') you want; up to 9, and it gets complicated.

Here are the errors I've found in the Character Creation and Attributes chapters:

Should be: one of the heroes

Possibly correct but can’t help feeling it should be ‘battle-scarred’

The Species section is free of any errors I could see.

Here are the errors from the Playbook, Quirks and Weapons sections:

The History section was refreshingly free of any errors that I could notice, but it occured to me that I'm more interested in reading the rules at this stage, so I'll come back to the fluff chapters later on and have skipped forward to the Master of Ceremonies chapter. Here are the errors I found in that and the Conflict and Story chapters:

Page 157 - Column 2

Should be 'We've'

Next up, here's the errors I've found in the Supernatural Monsters, Introductory Adventures, More Adventures, Upgrades, X-Card and Other Ways to Play chapters. I'll try and get around to the rest, Usagi's Japan, Map, and Characters of Usagi Yojimbo in the next couple of days.

Actually, I think I''m done. I was reading reviews for some other Sanguine products and poor quality control and no attempt to ever address errors seems to be a common theme so I'm probably just pontificating into the void.
I've left a review and I'll leave it at that.

I believe the first option on the Up to 12 Majutsu is missing. It goes straight to "Or". I believe it is a Grand Utility Spell, but i may be wrong.

Also, I love that finally someone is releasing E-Book files here as well. PDF is amazing, but for those of us with E-Book Readers, it is good to have the option.

That should be "grand utility", yes. And we're glad to hear that the ebook is working for you!

Thank you. Will you fix the PDF about that? Also, i think some of the illustrations on the weapons table are misplaced. I really liked the book and the system, but want to be sure it is in its final, completely fixed version before taking it to a printing service.

What is the best way to get the playbooks for this? I'm glad I got the PDF + Softcover so I can print odd-numbered pages from the Playbooks chapter—but is there a downloadable version of this already? Or some other option?

If you're using Windows, you should have a Print to PDF option in the available printers.
If you select the pages you want to print divided by commas (for example: 1,5,33,47), you can print a PDF that only has the desired pages in.
If you're using a Mac, I'm not sure. There should be Print to PDF options freely available, though.

Thanks! I already did something similar: I created a PDF with the "playbook" pages interspersed between leafs of the official character sheets. Printed, it comes out as 14 character sheets with different playbooks on the B sides. I just thought there might be an official kit, like the one for Dungeon World.

Can I respectfully request that you add the front and back covers to the PDF? This is not only an aesthetic plus but will also have the knock-on effect of nudging the pages on one so that when the book is viewed in 2-page view the left and right pages in the spread are the right way around.

On page 12 of the pdf, under "Time" section the page ends in the middle of a sentence:
"Scenes are usually five to ten minutes of time both in the story's"
Should be something more here.

John S April 05, 2020 8:43 pm UTC
I'm guessing this would be something like "…both in the story's fiction and at the table in real life." But it would be great to hear confirmation or discomfirmation from the creators or publisher. I'd love to know if there is an errata available.

New "updated version" mail received and this and others errata without fixing. Very dissapointing!
Customer avatar
Wayne P March 29, 2021 10:22 am UTC
It is baffling isn't it? That cut-off mid-sentence is a pretty embarrasing error and a quick and simple fix. I've been reading through the book the last couple of days and it's littered with typos and grammatical errors and so far no attempt to correct them. Was the book not proof read?
I also, cannot understand why the front and back covers are included as separate image files instead of being in the PDF. It'd also mean that the pages viewed in double page spread would be in the correct order. This is, admittedly, a minor thing but it really does irritate me.
Oh and despite being updated in March 2021, the file name is currently still dated March 2020 which is confusing. They should either amend the date for the updates so it's easier to keep track of changes or just not include the date in the file name.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
