Blue Planet: Recontact Quickstart

Suggested Price $5.00

This booklet is the quickstart primer for the new Recontact edition of the acclaimed BLUE PLANET role playing game. It provides all the setting and rules information needed to play, as well as a campaign archetype, a ready-to-run adventure, and four pregenerated characters.

BLUE PLANET offers hard sci fi adventure on the ecologically wild, sociopolitically contentious frontier of Earth’s first extrasolar colony world: a distant waterworld named Poseidon. The first edition was published in 1997 by Biohazard Games, and a second edition was produced by Fantasy Flight Games in 2000. Steve Jackson Games published GURPS BLUE PLANET in 2003, and FASA Games published the revised second edition in 2012.

BLUE PLANET has received broad acclaim, particularly for it’s deep, detailed, and realistic setting; the game has remained well regarded since its original publication.

However, that publication was over 20 years ago; in the intervening decades, all versions have gone out of print and game design has evolved dramatically. Excited at the prospect of giving the game system an overdue upgrade—and the opportunity to offer BLUE PLANET to new generations of gamers—the original creators at Biohazard Games have teamed up with Gallant Knight Games to produce BLUE PLANET: RECONTACT, the third edition of the classic game.

RECONTACT features a modern evolution of the second edition mechanics with fully updated technological, scientific, and sociological worldbuilding. Recontact is the in-game term for the fateful day in 2165 when the UNSS Admiral Robert Perry entered orbit around Poseidon, reconnecting the colonists with Earth 69 years after they were abandoned. Since more than two decades have passed since the publication of the first edition, RECONTACT seemed a fitting subtitle for the new version of the game.

Just by chance found out about the new edition today. It felt like a late Christmas present, and a most welcome one at that!
Looking forward to see it in Kickstarter!

Looks great! Quick question, do you plant to update the timeline with more modern views on the ecological future of our planet? Seems like climate change and a genedrive/gene edited plant virus (as the Blight) would be a great fit.

I just found out about the new edition today, and I was overjoyed. Blue Planet is easily one of my favorite science fiction settings, and I'm very happy to see it return.

There are mentions of some updates to the rules and setting. The rules looks great, but what about the setting? Has there been updates on the setting's lore and history, for example? If so, any examples? :)

Can't wait to get the finished book in my hands, and I'm hoping for a long line of new Blue Planet releases!

I love this! It is absolutely my favorite campaign setting, but I have been hesitant to play the previous editions due to not being a fan of the rules of those systems. The rules on Reconnect look original and very easy to use. I can't wait for the final product to be done because this is a game I will definitely bring to my gaming group.

This is my all-time favourite RPG. I was very excited for this new version and a little bit nervous to have a look inside this Quickstarter.
But i will brave this challenge, those reviews are good ... :)
Very looking forward to the Kickstarter. This will be an all-in, i guess.

Read it, like it. A very good blend of a streamlined V2 and some modern and slightly narrative stuff.
Bring the Kickstarter on!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
