The Temple of the Blood Moth

A science-fantasy horror dungeon for Old School versions of Dungeons & Dragons.

What is The Temple of the Blood Moth?

The Temple of the Blood Moth is an OSR dungeon zine full of horrible moth-creatures, a doomsday cult, strange mutants, and rusted, blood-pumping machinery.

The biological life-cycle of the central creature, the Moths, is a framing element of the dungeon itself, inspired by movies like Alien and The Thing. Each subterranean level of the dungeon corresponds to a different life-cycle stage of the Moth.

This dungeon is designed to be directly compatible with OSR systems and easily adapted to 5th Edition and other systems. All monsters include stat-references which can be used to figure out how they work in basically any game with a Monster Manual.

Though Temple of the Blood Moth has some sci-fi elements like mutation, biological horror,  and machinery, it can be comfortably incorporated into any D&D-like medieval fantasy setting.

This adventure is not properly leveled. I run level 4-5 PCs, OSE and a single Moth slaugthers the party (2 PCs, a dog and charmed cultist dead - 4 more PCs escaped). There is no way this can be played reasonably for levels 1-3, even 4-5 this is a slaughterhouse. With the epic stakes and the difficulty of monsters, I think this 6-8 easy, so beware.

I've been trying to print this and I keep getting (annoyingly vague) errors. I've tried printing the booklet version and the standard version as a booklet, and re-downloaded them a few times but I just can't get it to print. Has anyone else had issues with this? This seems to be the only PDF from here I've had trouble with.

Just as a follow-up, it seems like the problem is page 5 (in the booklet version, page 29 in the standard version). I can print the pages around it, but that page just won't. I was able to figure a work around, printing as an image worked, but then I ran into a problem that is for sure on my end. So, at least there's a way around it.

I have this adv and it works well. I got this as a kickstarter. It has a good sense of mystery, but needs some good writing in as a DM into a story line. It has a horror feel and would work in any campaign but does lone itself way to Ravensloft. On the negative side i think it needs more depth in regards to churches/cult structure. More clues alluding to a significant figures in the organization can increase the story telling. However i have just add some bits to buidl this in. I have now run this twice, with different groups. One as a 1 shot and 2ndly as part of a part of a wider story/campaign.

I just ran the adventure yesterday. I can't but this in the REVIEW because it was purchased via Kickstarter

On the negative side:
* It needed another editing pass.
* Giving all the Cultists SLEEP spells isn't a great idea.
* Not a lot given for handling the blood planet
* Only finding the big bad by being on the bottom level AND having to roll a "1" on a d6 AND then requiring a result of "12" on 2d6 = never meeting the big bad guy.
* Some of the damage didn't seem to "balance" correctly.
* If you drop this into your own campaign...and the players could be the end of you world as you know it.

On the positive side:
* the subject matter was both fun and unusual
* the dungeon was well put together
* the blood planet is evocative.
* Makes for a wonderful one-shot.

I bought the physical copy for $8 level on kickstarter. I will say that it was worth it. So $5 for the pdf on Drive...See more

As Raymond pointed out, a preview to show how you justify your pricing is crucial here. Especially with this publisher having nothing else to show for its quality. Word of advice, throw something free out there first to give people some idea of your style and quality before asking for compensation for your efforts. Few people are going to throw money at you blind.

$8 for 24 pages and no preview? It sounds interesting but for that price I need a good reason to pull the trigger, and without a preview, I don't see how that can happen. Why is it so expensive anyway?

This is an adventure not a splat book.

The goal of an adventure should be succinct writing and useful detail so a GM can easily run it without spending hours prepping. That's what you get here. Many people here have the same mindset as those on Steam who just watch sales and load up on an immense inventory of things for as cheap as possible rather than focus on getting things that may cost a bit more but are higher quality and more likely to be used and enjoyed.

What the heck are you talking about? Your comment is a reply to mine but it doesn't seem relevant to my request for a preview.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
