Shadowrun: Sixth World Beginner Box

RISK IT ALL!

Shadows darken and deepen. They’re cast by the enormous, world-striding megacorporations that grasp for power and strangle humanity in their clutches. By 2080, most of the planet has given in—bowing and scraping before their corporate overlords; selling their souls to the almighty nuyen. The corps gotta make a trillion, no matter who dies.

But in the darkest depths, defiance flickers. Spikes, mohawks, and tattoos flash, while blades and appetites sharpen. The ignored and the marginalized refuse to be ground down. And their reactions set their destiny. They may seek to repair the world’s injustices, or build wealth to keep themselves safe, or just strike a match and watch the world burn.

Regardless of the chosen path, they stand up and survive. They’re called shadowrunners, and they risk everything …

Wrestling magical energies, channeling them into power;

Pitting their minds against the electronic void of the Matrix;

Trading flesh and blood for chrome and steel to become more than human.

Will you stand up, join them, and dare to risk it all?

I was deeply disappointed with this purchase - I have the print edition.
*spoiler alert*
A dreadful adventure, with deeply flawed plot from beginning to end - Erica is so important to the UCAs that her car is allowed to wander into gang turf with no drone support, no military or corpsec? the elf and troll gangers who are mortal enemies according to prior supplements have somehow not just started killing each other on contact this time either? Even once the car stops, there's no countermeasures? Once the gangs all gather 'warriors' style and finally kick-off, why on earth is Erica out of her presumably highly armoured car? And lastly, we're still using the stuffer shack tables from 1st ed? It was cute as a value add in 3rd Ed's 'First Run' but seriously weak now.
Also ruined by errors. The spell cards for the mage, for example, have the description for the armour spell repeated on the fire-based attack spells. So the mage player doesn't have all the rules he needs, making the cards pointless....See more

I'll likely pick up the physical for the dice and tokens when I get core book. sounds like they still have their bricks and mortar program going so will get the digital copies as well.

The fact German version has less errors and is free is somewhat worrying. I recommend getting it just for the correct character stats and skill ratings and the edge token sheet

I bought this boxed set at Origins, along with every other SR 6 thing Catalyst had with them there. Is there a way I can get a complimentary copy of the PDF?

Your review mentions this: “Complete inaccurate and senseless gibberish written on the reference cards for spells, e.g. flamestrike ‘Roll Sorcery + Magic and add net hits to target’s Defense Rating and to Body for Damage Resistance tests.’”

I don’t know the SR system. What should it read?

it should read roll against defense rating... looks like they printed the armor spell on top of flamestrike

The quick start rules version of a human rigger, Emu, are available as a free download here on DTRPG. If you want to see a preview of some of this without spending money on a bad product, I recommend taking a look at that.

My best summary: Edgerun has arrived. Edge is baked into everything, the same as Limits were in 5E. If you don't like the Edge system, the game will not be one you can invest in, because you can't just ignore it and play anyway. Its way easier to understand, but it doesn't feel interesting or exciting to consider playing a game that is more about mastering how to earn and burn Edge. That said, I think I could play it easily without burning out half my brain cells trying to parse the rules.

I just realized I could walk to the offices of Catalyst Game Labs and complain in person about this set. I live across town from where they are headquartered.

Catalyst, why do you do this? Not even the most fanatical apologists can put out a good word for you based on this; value your customers, stop rushing your products. I'm sticking to 5E, since the quality seems to be the same, if not worse.

Was about to purchase this, but not going to if it is so poorly edited. Not worth it even at $10.

Yes there are flaws that should not be there. Some are even blatant; but for ten dollars this isn't that bad of a set. A session with a pdf editor can fix the mistakes with the cards. I agree that we should not have to do that though. Catalyst should have done a better job of editing this set. I'm just saying that in my opinion it is not as bad as many of the Catalyst haters will make it out to be.

If you're paying $10, it's not on you to fix the documents. It's bad enough they did this once before, a second time is just carelessness.

I can't disagree with you. Also it is not the second time. They released many books for 5th edition that were filled with mistakes. The only reason the game is still alive is because fans of the setting want it to succeed. I think the people that own the license realize that and would rather just put out the books for a cash grab rather than pay the extra money to put out a better product.

If a session with a PDF editor can fix the mistakes, hopefully CGL will do it and update the PDFs.

There are some rules in this edition that I actually prefer to the overly clunky 5E. Magic resistance seems more balanced, things seem a little more streamlined and I actually like the new Edge mechanic -it kind of works like Momentum in Conan 2D20. It's just the editing in this box set is so terrible that it is hard to get past the glaring contradictions.

What exactly is included in this digital version? The card files are they png, pdf, how easy is this to use on VTT like Roll20?

The kit includes 10 PDF files: 4x Character Dossiers, 1x Adventure, 1x Quickstart Rules, 1x Reference Cards, 1x Instant Guide (Which is a short Primer on the Setting), 1x Instruction Guide (Which is how to use this Box) and 1x Map of Seattle (Which is quite good). As stated before ALL are PDF files and need some serious attention to the mistakes such as the fireball spell card description actually describing the Armour Spell, contradictions in Quick Start Rules etc.

The cards are in a single PDF file which can easily be split (e.g. PDFSam) but the resulting images are probably less than ideal for roll20. (I have not tried to import a deck in roll 20 though so it might work.) I'm simply planning on keeping my cards open for my own reference on my desktop as I play.

Also the map is in serious need of help. It's gorgeous but it has some glaring issues. The most notable I have found is that Aztechnology is no longer in Seattle. The pyramid is still on the map but it is not labeled as Aztechnology. In fact, the number for Aztechnology in the key is not to be found on the map. In other cases things have moved but it is not clear to me yet whether or not that is intentional.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
