What is Badbeats?

Inspired by other non-traditional role-playing games, Badbeats is a simple storytelling role-playing game which uses a standard poker deck to determine the outcome of the actions of players. The core rules are two pages in length, and the advanced, optional rules are only an additional three pages in length. Games are intended to play in about an hour, but can optionally be played as longer or ongoing campaign games through the use of the optional advanced rules.

Who is Badbeats for?

Really, it's intended for anyone and everyone that enjoys role-playing games or is just curious about them. The system was designed to be simple enough for anyone to pick it up and play it with little more than a quick read, and to be light enough in components and setup that it could be played at a table in a restaurant or in a line at a convention without disturbing the people around you.

Why a deck of cards and poker?

Most people are familiar with poker to some degree or at the very least are familiar with a deck of cards. At its very core though, in the "lite" rules, you don't need to be even remotely familiar with poker to play Badbeats. Badbeats adds to traditional poker plays a "single card play", allowing players to use individual cards of 7 or higher to represent successes and 6 or lower to represent failures. As to why a deck of cards: I chose to use a deck of cards because it is typically quieter in public settings to prepare than it is to repeatedly roll dice, and it can be easily held while standing without needing a surface on which to roll.

Do I have to pay for such a simple game?

No, absolutely not. If you really like it, feel free to throw a buck my way and buy me a coffee. I'd greatly appreciate it, but you absolutely don't have to do that. I wanted to produce a super simple game that everyone could enjoy, and I felt that releasing it for free and under the Creative Commons license would be a great way of sharing it with everyone and giving others the chance to build on it if they wished to do so.

Can I share this/print this?

Absolutely. Spread it around, I'm just happy you want to share it with people. :)

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
