At some point in a fantasy setting, characters may encounter prisons, as people will still need locking up by the authorities - perhaps these people include the characters themselves. Characters may also need to break someone out of a prison at some point. Prisons have prisoners to encounter, and this list has 100 different prisoners that could be encountered in a jail. These may be encountered in the lockup of a town or city, but may also be in prisons that have been especially built and enchanted to deal with the problems of holding prisoners who can use magic. The prisoners are those who have been locked up for breaking the law, not ones who might be encountered as captives elsewhere.

Here are some sample results:

  • Helmer Hock, the Hangman’s Bane: A priest of strange gods, the narrow-shouldered man with blue black skin speaks with a voice that seems far too deep for his thin chest. He made bargains with the bandit lords throughout the Black Woods and the Rolling River fens that, should they be hanged, he would resurrect them. All they need do was pay him and his gods a tithe of their take. Many took him up on the offer, and received just what they were promised. It wasn’t until the coalition was broken by the Order of the Road Wardens that Hock was brought before a magistrate. Initially he was sentenced to hang, but the smile on his face made the magistrate commute the sentence to life in prison... just in case.
  • Corlon “the Coyote” Baker: While he was never much of a gravedigger, an iron constitution and total disregard for superstition made the straw-haired man a fairly accomplished grave robber. Selling the trinkets he slipped off of fingers and from around necks turned into selling the bodies themselves. He’d been at it for years until a group of late-night mourners caught him at work. They dragged him to the constables bleeding and gasping. He confessed without even being asked, just to get away from the enraged crowd.
  • Sparker Dovetail: A man whose limbs seem disjointed and mismatched, and whose angles are all wrong, those who look closely recognize him as a flesh golem who appears to have achieved sentience. Kind-hearted, and with a strong singing voice, it seems impossible that such a gentle soul could have committed the crimes he was sentenced for. Those who have seen what happens when Sparker goes berserk, though, know the true and deadly power that lurks within him.
  • Choral Shakar: With the contours of a goddess, and a heart filled with cruelty, this tiefling is as alluring as she is unsettling. With her iron fingernails and steel teeth, her kiss has robbed more than a few unwary paramours of their tongues. And, at least according to the rumor mill, other body parts as well.
  • Tulan Du’roc: An old man with a silver beard and ebony skin, he was once the leader of a cult that called itself the Children of A’teph. A rural bunch of nature worshipers as far as most were concerned, it’s said that Tulan delved deeper, and uncovered ancient rites that hadn’t been practiced in centuries when his people’s crops died, and their animals’ milk turned to blood. The defilement of young girls, and the sacrifice of children, were nothing in the face of starvation and ruin. Tulan has never admitted to any such crimes, and maintains he is a simple man who gives obeisance to nature. His garden grows unnaturally well, even in the prison’s stony soil, and some claim they’ve seen him cutting his fingers and giving his blood to the earth as sacrifice.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
