Ages ago, the ancients had the skills and knowledge to create artifacts–magic items that stored permanent arcane energy in the form of spells and preternatural effects. As the centuries passed, the mastery of crafting such relics had been forgotten. Until now.

After generations of dangerous explorations into the ruins of lost civilizations and long, arduous research in the most sophisticated arcane labs, artificers have unlocked the ability to produce artifacts once again. Now they share this collected knowledge with you in the Artificer’s Codex.

Artificer’s Codex presents new Setting Rules and Edges that allow artificers to create permanent magic items in a high-magic, fantasy Savage Worlds setting. While designed for fantasy settings, these rules can be adapted easily to other genres as well.

Hi, Colleen. I'm not sure what specifically you're asking about, but to clarify the scope of the rules, this supplement addresses the ability to create permanent arcane devices—as presented in SWADE—that function similarly to minor and major artifacts presented in the loot tables found in the pre-SWADE Fantasy Companion.

However, rules for mundane masterwork items can be found in the Pathfinder for Savage Worlds core rules. Hopefully, we'll see similar rules in the SWADE version of the Fantasy Companion.

Hello! Love the supplement! I had a few questions about a few aspects, pricing in particular.

1. In the interest of lowering costs, can the Artificer use a lower Arcane skill die than their current die when creating minor artifacts?
2. Does the Artificer still have to pay for their Arcane skill die even if the artifact requires a different skill, such as shooting?
3. When is money spent during item creation? Having to pay extra for getting a raise on the Arcane skill completion roll when creating a major artifact implies money is spent after creation is complete, but it seems a bit odd not knowing how much it costs to create an artifact until it's already completed.

Some examples of pricing would also be helpful and appreciated!

1. I don’t see why not. Although, the item risks being less effective. In theory, they could simply cast boost/lower Trait on themselves (or wear a magic item that has that power) before beginning the process.

2. It depends on the item. In the cases of items that use the wielder’s associated skill (Fighting, Shooting, Athletics (throwing), etc.), no. But if the item is a wearable item such as a cloak or headband, for example, and it uses the artificer’s arcane skill die, then yes.

3. As per the description, the monetary cost "represents the cost of materials, components, or tools needed to create the item," all of which would be an up front cost before the process begins.

Regarding examples of pricing, the pricing actually is based on the tables in the Fantasy Companion which in turn was based on the old (no longer published) Fantasy Gear Toolkit, but you are absolutely encouraged to adjust prices as appropriate for the setting.

To clarify the third question: How do you determine the final price of a Major Artifact before the completion roll? An Artificer creating a Major Artifact would need to gather enough money to pay for the item's creation, and if the completion roll is a success the item is created. But what happens if a raise is rolled here? Does the Artificer suddenly have to pay an extra $500 per powerpoint, or am I misunderstanding the "raise" part of the the price table?

Apologies, by "pricing examples" I mean examples of the step by step procedure on how to price items, not a list of premade item and their prices. Something similar to the included example of creating the "Circlet of Subjective Stepping", but with pricing details included.

I will happily leave a review! At the moment I wish to make sure I'm not missing something or misunderstanding the supplement before forming a final opinion.

Ah, I see! The raise would only increase the value, not the cost to create. We might clarify that with a future update.

When I was referring to the Fantasy Companion, I meant the loot tables for generating items. Those values are based on the same values for determining market values. Apologies if that was not clear.

Here's a breakdown of how a minor artifact might be priced.

$100: Mace
$0: Arcane Skill (Fighting is used instead)
$1,000: Smite, Novice power ($1,000/rank)
$2,000: 10 power points x $2,000/pp
$2,000: Improved Rapid Recharge
---
$5,100: Total market value

For the same item but as a major artifact with no recharge required–since it doesn't cost PP to activate–and with the Fatigue modifier added in:
$100: Mace
$0: Arcane Skill (Always on when wielded)
$1,000: Smite, Novice power ($1,000/rank)
$12,000: 4pp (the min. cost of 2pp + 2pp for the Fatigue modifier) x $3,000 for a raise (+4 damage)...See more

Yes, it is. It's designed to play off of the Artificer Edge which came out of SWADE while also working with major and minor artifacts in the existing Fantasy Companion.

Once the SWADE version of the FC comes out, we might update it for compatibility with that or keep it as is as a variant system.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
