Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit

ZIP File

The 4th Corporate War’s over and the big dogs have retreated to their corners to lick their wounds. That leaves everyone else to fend for themselves in a shattered world.

And that’s just fine. ‘cause you’ve got interface plugs in your wrists, metal in your limbs, and chips in your skull. You’re wired in, loaded with chrome, and ready to take it to the Edge.

There’s a world full of opportunities out there. Maybe this time you can do more than save yourself. Maybe.

The Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit is the perfect introduction to the newest edition of the classic Cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying game and includes:

  • Two booklets, one containing world lore and adventures and the other the essential rules needed to play.
  • Six pregenerated characters.
  • Maps and standees to help bring the world of Cyberpunk to life!

Staff Pick

Whether you love cyberpunk as a genre, adored Cyberpunk 2020, or are eagerly awaiting Cyberpunk 2077, you're going to love Cyberpunk Red. Although the core book is not out yet, the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit allows for a taste of the system, world, and flavor that have made this franchise world famous.

The kit is slim in a minimalist way, but with a sleek, gorgeous layout, allowing for a basic setup for the world of Cyberpunk Red. You get two 50-page booklets (one containing world lore and adventures, the other rules needed to play), six pre-generated characters, plus maps and standees to get your game started. The rules are more or less what I remember from Cyberpunk 2020, but with a few new mechanics that will make for an unforgettable time.

This is a great starter campaign for your group, or even just something fun to read, and it offers a chance to experience the nostalgia or dive into the unknown, depending on your level of experience.

nice update to 2020. Although, 'missiles' not 'missles' on the play aids.

I will note that I'll be running this with 2D6-1 instead of a D10--I need me some bell curve.

I'd like to have .jpg files for the maps and standees to use in VTT, otherwise the digital version is kind of useless.

10 dollars is way to much for this product, but it looks like a great game.

I repeat my kudos to the game, but a lot of discussion speculates on which rules simplifications were only for the purposes of fitting a game into the Jumpstart Kit, and which are deliberate simplifications (compared to the old CP2020 of 30 years ago) which will be retained in the full big core rulebook. We have no way to tell.
Are there any statements that you can make to the RPG fans about what rules stay simplified in the core rulebook? It will help us move properly if we want to create adventures using the condensed Jumpstart rules that will still work after the core rulebook release.

What you see in the Jumpstart Kit are building blocks. We're going out from there but the core will stay more or less the same.

Pretty excited to try this out, my DM just sent out the pregens for the gang to pick over. Shame there doesn't seem to be a set releasedate for the full thing yet, the peak at the rulebook does make hunger for more.

Just one issue, it seems that Mover (The Solo) and Forty (The Rockerboy) have the exact same pregen stat sets. Is that intentional?

We're working on the core rulebook. No announcement on a date yet but we will scream it when we have one.

Thank you for this reply! I thought that the old cyberpunk core-rulebook was the same version as this. Never tried this out before! I however purchased this starter set today on the sale and I intend to run it with my friends once the COVID-19 situation is over.

Once again, thank you for this reply. <3

We do not sell directly on Amazon but it is available to retailers who do. Best way to find out is to do a search there.

Finally got my hands on the physical edition, but can't post a review because I haven't got the digital one. ;)

Nonetheless, here's the review.

The Time of the Red offers really interesting storytelling opportunities. It’s described as a time of hope in which the corporations don’t hold all the cards. And even if by 2077 the corps are the kings and queens of Night City again… who’s to say your PCs haven’t scored some personal victories until then?

The scenario is next to flawless, and the literally only thing that I don’t like about it is how CD Project Red has their fingers all over the product. There’s no particular reason to make this PnP wholly consistent with the upcoming video game. I’d love for the Pondsmiths to worry about 2077 in 32 years, but for now, to just concentrate on 2045 and on consistency with the established timeline until that point. And there are some oversights in that respect. The jumpstart kit’s text e.g. says that Elisabeth...See more

Though I much enjoyed reading the rules for this game, as someone who has run several different systems over the past 30 years for various roleplaying groups, I would like to make a few interesting observations and maybe ask how they will be handled in the finished product. Now, I have not run previous editions of Cyberpunk, so this is blissfully my first exposure to the rule system, and I have the luxury of making completely neutral observations.

After reading the rules (and I hope I have not misread anything), I noticed that the absolute most important combat stat for any Netrunner that wants to ever hit a target, is going to be Dex. Of course Ref is important for initiative, but basically everyone will want to be a Dex Monster, but that is not necessarily the fault of the system. We all know some players can and will min max a character. I do have the question of weather Dexterity should be a defining attribute for this system's "Grapple" rules. Even if someone is highly dextrous,...See more

Any news on when the full rules should be released?

We don't have a release window at this time, no. There's still some work to be done, especially to make sure the Red/2077 lore lines up.

Is this an actual playable game or is this like so many "preview editions" that consist of nothing more than a few basic rules and ads for the complete edition? $15 seems awfully high for a "preview", especially since we don't know when the actual full version is going to be released.

This is a starter set. Designed to be played right out of the box. The rules are simple, yes, but there's a nice depth of world lore. It also comes with a number of goodies, such as maps and standees. Over a hundred pages of content plus a full adventure and three scenarios. A bit different from a quickstart.

Does it actually have character creation rules (and for more than one class or archetype)? Once the adventure and three scenarios are finished is there still enough to run a game on? Or do we have to wait for the full book (which we still have no idea when it will be out)? Does the Jumpstart Kit have rules for netrunning?
I’m interested in running a cyberpunk type game, but $15 seems like a lot for a pdf that isn’t the complete rules - especially since we have no idea when the core book is actually coming out.

No character creation rules, but the pregens are customizable to a degree.

We know there are gamers out there running campaigns out of the box. Some of them play it straight. Others are mixing in 2020 rules for now. We're rolling out additional material on our site as free downloads to help with that.

It absolutely has rules for netrunning. They are, in fact, something we're showing off.

Where can I find those "additional materials" on your site? Talsorian site or CDPR site?

Joe A November 04, 2019 3:36 pm UTC
Not the publisher, but there are some in the Kitbashing section for creating your own screamsheets:

They're on the Blog section, by Cyberpunk keyword. I do wish some of the releases were better organized on the website. I'd expect to see this under the Our Games > Cyberpunk section, or even in the Downloads > Game Aids or Community created resources, but they're not.

Some constructive feedback for the publishers - expect to get more press and coverage (already Adamantine seller on DTRPG - congrats!) and especially newbies to your website. Consider restructuring the website to match the new player expectations and make content easier to find and more organized than a Wordpress site. The expectation many new users would have is going to CyberPunk would have EVERYTHING up-to-date and available so far with regards to Red. Links back to press coverage, DTRPG ranking ("We've run so fast we've left...See more

Lovely product, clearly you are doing something right since the Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit .pdfs have shot to #1 on DriveThru since Gen Con Aug. 1st, with only a brief demotion to #2 when our good friend Shadowrun Sixth Edition came out. And yet that's a full core book. Gamers clearly want straight-up cyberpunk stories like the original CP2020. I am adjusting to the ins and outs of the post-nuke 2043 Night City setting. Strange to not have an efficient, world-spanning 'Net or a fractured United States. The Netrunner role should be more streamlined to resolve actions, though, so that's an improvement.

I have a question regarding full version.
Will it also take place in the years ~2045 or maybe already in the times of Cyberpunk 2077?
Customer avatar
Rory H September 23, 2019 5:27 am UTC
I think, in a full core book, the ideal would be to detail a timeline that inclusively stretches from 2020 up to 2077. There is nothing in the mechanics themselves that preclude this, I think, although there is a degree of irony that not an awful lot technological change occurs leading to the 2077 date (as per the computer game).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
