GM's Maps #83: Community Resource Center

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The Community Resource Centre is a small but very useful organisation providing a wide range of services to the local community and staffed by community volunteers as well as a few specialists. From the community cafe where you can have an inexpensive hot meal and mix with neighbours and other members of the community, to the access to legal services, youth workers and councillors along with other professionals. The centre also provides space for community groups, form craft and hobby groups to writing circles and training courses. First aid facilities are also on hand and the emergency services can use the building as a staging area in the case of natural disasters or serious accidents. There is even a community radio station on the top floor!

This product is based on just such a CRC based in the authors home town and a portion of profits from these sales will go towards the centre.

In addition to the map, which comes as in both simple format (mostly monochrome with a pale blue grid, as well as a version without the grid) and colour format for a more striking visual appeal, you will also find a key and 10 adventure/plot hooks.

Sample Plot Hooks included in this product:-

1/. Staging Area

The small community has been torn apart by a colliery collapse. The old mine shafts have finally given way and broken power and gas lines causing secondary explosions all over the town. Dozens are dead or injured, buildings are on fire or collapsing, the bottom end of the main street has vanished into a sinkhole.

The overworked emergency services and dozens of civilian volunteers are doing everything they can to save as much of the town and rescue as many people as possible. The Community Resource Centre has become a staging point. Emergency response briefings are being run in one of the project rooms, they are doing triage on the street outside; the walking wounded are being fed and given tea in the community cafe. The PCs are volunteers or members of the rescue services who are being based out of the staging area that is the CRC and will face a range of challenges as they try to help and rescue friends and neighbours.

10/. The Signal

One of the community radio DJs is secretly a cultist of some ancient, forgotten god. They plan to broadcast a signal that has hidden within it an eldritch spell. If the signal is sent out, it will summon portals to the pocket dimension where the god lies trapped and dreaming wherever the signal is heard. The PCs must stop the transmission but the cultist has companions hidden in the CRC, and the local authorities, who think the PCs are the villains, are on their way.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
