A 132 pg. Gazetteer packed with info about a realm of wizards and demons for use with any RPG.

Hex Map Sample 01

Remember the Voyage of the Princess Ark episodes from Dragon Magazine? Along the same general idea, "On Wings of Darkness" blends a new skyship episode in a 132 pg. geographic Gazetteer packed with info about a realm of wizards and demons. The following chapters follow the introductory short story:

  • Coat of ArmsHistory of Caldwen:  This chapter covers the origins of the magiocracy, from its ancient time on Munaan, a moon of Calidar, to present-day Caldwen. Includes a summary and a huge timeline of events.
  • Lay of the Land: Geography, climate, local culture, main cults and races, economy, regional peculiarities, and local dynamics combine to depict each province separately.
  • Intrigues of the Magi: Internal politics, government by academia, and the military overlaid upon rivalries among the wizardly aristocracy and the sorcerous hoi-polloi give the magiocracy a unique character.
  • Behind the curtains: Discover the odd brotherhoods and secret sects working from the shadows, scheming to make an already-challenging setting even more perilous.
  • A Cast of Many: A host of political figures, academic personalities, and curious individuals populate these pages. They are presented here, with game stats, motivations, secrets, and connections galore.
  • Master & Servant: A nation where demons serve the spellcasting class, local laws, and tools of lordship are presented alongside a who's who of Caldwen's most notorious demons.
  • School BadgeBeasties in the Dark: Some of the more curious creatures dwelling in Caldwen populate this section, complete with stats and illustrations, beckoning game referees to summon them during their adventures.
  • At the Heart of Magic:  Discover Caldwen's schools of magic and how their benefits, tuition, philosophies, diplomas, and campus rivalries influence the fabric of the entire magiocracy.
  • Secrets of the Cabals: Private guilds provide alternate career paths in the fields of Alchemy, Demonology, Dracology, Elementalism, Necromancy, and Skymastery, with deadly trials and fabulous powers.
  • Blood of the World Soul: An order of mage-knights concerns itself with a mystical source of raw magical power forbidden to all but Caldwen's aristocracy. Though potent, it is deadly if abused.
  • Sky City of Arcanial: The capital city is a wondrous place flying above a sprawling shanty town on the ground. Packed with encounter ideas, each district requires flying gondolas and teleporters to reach.

Story Excerpt: (. . .) “Ahoy the Star Phoenix,” a spell-enhanced voice resonated for all to hear. “This is the Lord High’s Warship Darkwing. Captain d’Alberran, you stand accused of murder. In the name of Caldwen’s Law, heave to and prepare to be boarded.”

The captain tapped his wand against his lips. “I shall do no such thing. I am no murderer and, as a duly-warranted legate from the Kingdom of Meryath, I hereby invoke our realms’ safe way oaths. Stand down at once.”

The response came as swiftly as it was abrupt. Four heavy harpoons glaring with blue flames flew from the Darkwing. “Mister Pebbleborn,” hailed the captain. “Give her hell!”

The master artillerist signaled his teams, and as many projectiles shot forth, imbued with green halos. “Reload now or never,” the dwarf hollered. “The last one gets the feel of my boot!”

“Mister Rugwittle, stand by for fire damage astern,” commanded Isledemer.

“Aye aye, Sir,” responded the ship’s master artificer. The gnome proceeded abaft, his wand at the ready, while the blue and green projectiles crossed paths in the night sky.

“Mister Belzer, ease off the wheel and pull up steeply if you please.”

Steady as one who no longer fears death, the helmsman nodded and executed the maneuver.

While two glowing blue projectiles flew wide of the Star Phoenix’s aftcastle, the others erupted in great balls of cobalt flames amidships and astern. Woodwork crackled and buckled in the heat while Isledemer and Ebben cast spells to smother the blazes. Hoyk’s green lances then ripped through the Darkwing’s outrigger sails, shattering yardarms and burning canvas. Out of balance in the beating wind, she swayed askew. (. . .)

Here is a complete guide to the World of Calidar as of April 5th 2020. As a newcomer to this fantasy world, you should start with Series 1 Meryath, especially its Gazetteer since it introduces the universe.

Calidar%2BOrganization%2BUpdated%2B2020.

There are (so far) three distinct goups of books and poster maps.

Series 1 concerns CAL1 "In Stranger Skies," the very first Calidar Gazetteer, and accessories directly related to the Kingdom of Meryath featured in CAL1. They can be recognized by their blue color scheme.

Series 2 supports CAL2 "On Wings of Darkness," the second Calidar Gazetteer. Those feature a black color scheme.

The last category, the "X" series labeled "Outriggers," includes all other accessories not directly related to the Gazetteers. Ideally, these products should bear a purple color scheme (future retrofit?)

There will be a Series 3 focused on the elves of Alfdaín and Alorea. Its titles will be structured exactly like those in Series 2: 1 Gazetteer (CAL3), 1 Players' Guide (PG3), 1 Adventure (CA3), 2 Conversion Guides (one each for Labyrinth Lord and OSRIC, therefore CAL3a & CAL3b), plus possibly a pack of poster maps. As you might guess, this series will get a green color scheme.

Series%2B1%2BMeryath%2BB.jpg

CAL1 "In Stranger Skies" is the very first Gazetteer anyone new with Calidar should get. It provides an overview of the universe, the main world, and the Kingdom of Meryath which is home to the Star Phoenix, the skyship featured on the cover.

PG1 "Players' Guide to Meryath" summarizes important info from the Gazetteer for the players. It provides guidelines on how to roll up characters, and delves more deeply into Calidar's epic hero narrative, a central theme to this world. At the time of this article, PG1 is being laid out in prepress as it was added retroactively to this series. It should see print April or May 2020.

CA1 "Dreams of Aerie" is a sandbox adventure on a multi-decked flying circus providing player characters with a  mobile "home base" from which to kick off future adventures.

CA1 also offers fold-up maps available separately. DTRPG does not at this time support bundling books and fold-up posters because they are printed at different locations. Posters, cards, and fold-up maps aren't presently available from DTRPG due to Covid-19 lockdown.

CAL1a and CAL1b are Conversion Guides translating all game stats listed in CAL1, PG1, and CA1 for use with Labyrinth LordTM or OSRICTM. At the time of this article, these two books are awaiting layout work in prepress. They were added retroactively to this series. They should see print around early May 2020.

KM1 Kingdom of Meryath is a large 28" by 22" poster map. It is a limited edition printed outside DTRPG's sphere. It is available until stock runs out from the author's Facebook shop (US customers only; if outside the USA, please contact the author directly).

Series%2B2%2BCaldwen.jpg

CAL2 "On Wings of Darkness" describes a realm of wizards and demons. Its theme covers schools of magic, a source of world magic, and of course, how to handle demons.

PG2 "Players' Guide to Caldwen" summarizes the Gazetteer's information for the players. It also features bloodlines, star signs, a new race related to demons, and a new character class of mage-knights forming an order connected with the source of world magic.

CA2 "How to Train Your Wizard" is the adventure for this series. It focuses on apprentices learning the trade of wizardry and necromancy. It provides a series of maps depicting the entire college, from dungeon to 12th floor.

CAL2a and CAL2b are Conversion Guides translating all game stats listed in CAL2, PG2, and CA2 for use with Labyrinth LordTM or OSRICTM. At the time of this article, these two books are at the printer. They should see print mid-April 2020.

CAL2 Seven Fold-Up Maps relate directly to CAL2. They display maps of Caldwen, topographic and hex styles, as well as street maps of the flying city of Arcanial and Port Arcana. DTRPG does not at this time support bundling books and fold-up posters because they are printed at different locations. Posters, cards, and fold-up maps aren't presently available from DTRPG due to Covid-19 lockdown.

Series%2BX%2BOutriggers.png

CC1 "Beyond the Skies" is a massive compendium of all things divine in the world of Calidar. It describes several pantheons of gods, game mechanics on faiths among mortals, running priest and shaman characters, divine favors and punishments, beliefs of the Dread Lands, demons, demigods, avatars, life after death, the netherworld, alliances among pantheons and deities, etc. CC1 is an invaluable sourcebook affecting all Gazetteers present and future.

CAGM1 Calidar Game Mechanics is a lightweight, pay-what-you-want pamphlet defining the various terms used for game stats in Calidar books. Calidar is primarily system-neutral, which explains the existence of conversion guides.

Calidar Climates is a single fold-up sheet showing the various climates on Calidar's surface, prevailing winds and sea currents.

Soltan Ephemeris is a single fold-up sheet showing an illustration of all planets orbiting the central star, Soltan.

DTRPG does not at this time support bundling books and fold-up posters because they are printed at different locations. Posters, cards, and fold-up maps aren't presently available from DTRPG due to Covid-19 lockdown.

GC1 Great Caldera is a large 28" by 22" poster map. It is a limited edition printed outside DTRPG's sphere. It is available until stock runs out from the author's Facebook shop (US customers only; if outside the USA, please contact the author directly).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
