First Five Fantasy Roleplaying

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

First Five Fantasy Roleplaying is an easy-to-master game based on the fifth introductory boxed version of the original fantasy roleplaying game. It is ideal for young players and players who are young at heart. This book contains all the rules you need to play exciting dungeon adventures, through levels 1 to 5.  Just add some funny shaped dice and friends!

This book is completely compatible with adventure modules written for basic versions of the original fantasy roleplaying game. It is also compatible with the popular encyclopedia of rules, which is suggested for use once your adventurers gain enough experience to move beyond the first five levels.

If you'd like a version of the rules for players to use at the table (without monsters and treasure in it), you can also pick-up the Player's Guide as Pay-What-You-Want.

PRINT VERSIONS:

First Five Fantasy Roleplaying is available in two print versions:

  • A4 softcover, perfect-bound
  • A5 hardcover, case-laminate

Note that each format is a different physical size, but the contents and layout are identical between the two versions.

Some monster names are followed by an asterisk, like Black Pudding and Gargoyle. I am guessing this means they are immune to normal attacks, but I can't find that explanation anywhere in the text? (BTW enjoying this trip to yesteryear very much!)

Yes, that's what it indicates, and I'm surprised that the explanation has been omitted. I'll have to correct that - which will take a little more doing than just adding the note due to flow on effects for the layout. Thanks for spotting this. I hope your trip to yesteryear isn't spoiled by that omission while you await a corrected version!

Thanks again for spotting this issue, Mike C. The PDF has now been uploaded. I am still working on getting the layout right in the print versions and those will take a little longer to update due to the process of ordering proof copies and approving them before releasing them for sale.

The new softcover print version incorporates this change. Anyone who has bought the game in print before can pick up the new version at cost using this link: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?discount=9cb466843e

I just want to clarify, the soft and hard covers are the same page count and layout? Only the font size is different? Thanks.

Yes, the hard cover has the same page count and layout, but the text and art are scaled to the smaller A5 page. The page is exactly half the size of the A4 soft cover but otherwise looks the same.

Do you see this as an Intro to RC? I know it's Black Box (which I well remember buying and loving) but ultimately in your play if you go past 5, you use RC? I don't have RC but do have OSE coming.

It is intended that once you pass level 5, you use the RC, but you can also use OSE past level 5, or Labyrinth Lord, or Dark Dungeons, or other retroclones - there are modest differences but they are all essentially compatible and similar until you get to very high levels.

The Attack Table has only monster 'to hit' numbers up to 4HD, but you've got many of higher HD in the monster section and the wandering monster table. In your game, do you just not use those monsters, extrapolate the numbers for higher HDs, use the 4HD row for higher HDs or just refer to the Rules Cyclopedia ?

Thanks for your purchase and your interest!

I personally use the Rules Cyclopedia's attack table for monsters with above 4 HD. I made the decision to present the attack table with the same ranges as the original book, although I could very easily have incorporated attack tables above 4 HD (and indeed these appeared on the original DM screen in the box up to 8 HD so arguably I should have done the same).

You could choose to use the 4HD row for higher HDs too - this makes PCs in the F5FR level range (i.e. 1 to 5) who are fighting the higher level monsters which appear in the book a bit more survivable. It depends how deadly you want your game to be!

Thanks Andrew, I'm tempted to use the 4HD line for higher monsters, running a dungeoncrawl just with this book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
