Dogs

DOGS is a genre and setting agnostic roleplaying game that uses a dice pool and betting system to resolve Conflicts of all types. The mechanics are heavily intertwined with the narrative, and while any kind of game can be played using DOGS, it's especially ideal for games where the players are solving mysteries, settling disputes, and making moral and/or ethical decisions.

---------------------------------------------------

Years ago, some friends and I used a hack of Dogs in the Vineyard to run a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure game, and since then I've used the system to run dozens of games in various copyrighted universes, as well as things of my own creation.

At a Con every year I run a new one-shot using my hack, and last year several people asked me if my setting was published. And considering I spent several months writing it, I figured I should look into doing that. So I emailed the guy (Vincent Baker, of Apocalypse World fame) who wrote the game originally, asking for permission to publish my campaign as long as I include a link to purchase DitV.

He responded more or less immediately, with bad news. Unfortunately, DitV is out of print so I could not do that. However, he told me that the only thing copyrighted are his actual words, and what I should do is rewrite the whole thing and publish it as my own.

So that's what I did! Meet DOGS, the Dice pool and mOral predicament based Generic roleplaying System!

I renamed some stuff, cut out the mormon missionary/sheriff thing entirely so that it's already set up to be used in any setting, codified some rules that I had been already using slightly differently than the original game, changed some rules entirely that I didn't like, modified the balance somewhat, and also included a sample campaign, the game that I ran at last year's con.

Greetings! Just wondering : have you create a Fan-Made document for the JoJo game you had ran with this system? My friends and I are very interested in trying it out! Also, thank you for making this!

Hi! I definitely would not recommend running a game using our original JoJo rules because they were way way overcomplicated (instead I would just say that your Stand adds 2d6 to one of your Stats, it's the source of your Powers, and using your Stand counts as escalating (up to a max of d12 Consequence dice instead of d10s).

However, that being said I do have the original documents using the original Dogs in the Vineyard rules, minus my balance changes and rules tweaks: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WecSMPySYQiZ8t01PEoY6OtlgAl7ude4/view?usp=sharing and https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Lg2Y9qCV_JhofwMbp8OS0YzGtU_W1E3h/view?usp=sharing

Are you aware that the product information lists the number of "cards" instead of the number of pages? I'm assuming that's an error.

Yeah I can't do anything about that, the only thing it asks me for is how many pages the book is. Must be some issue on drivethru's part

I can't seem to be able to download the PDF only version. Is there a reason for this or is it an error?

This has you labeled as a purchaser so hopefully you came back and noticed the fix, but there was some issue with drivethru where the pdf got taken down. I just had to make it private and then make it public again

Do you include the advice from Dogs in the Vineyard about roleplaying, or at least a paraphrase?

I have been thinking about a "Highschool Shonen Fairy Tail-Esque" game that might work with this game. Dogs in the Vineyard always caught my attention on his really special resolution. I've always thought "Man, if i just had a generic Do-your-own-game with this system, maybe i would jump into it". And now you did this, and i'm really glad.

So, i have worked a lot in a game about a school of magic (Ki use) that enables people to pursue their dreams and objectives in life. Ideally, they would have a lot of pressure for the people around them, persons of reference, and all that, which is really the focus of the game: What path will you follow? Will you follow your own path, loosing power in the meantime but eventually being the person you always wanted to be, or will you tap into the ways the people around you tells you to go, being powerful but not free?

Do you think this concept is actually workable with this system? I just glanced through the pdf but i dont know if...See more

yeah for the first one, i don't see why you wouldn't be able to use this system to run that type of game. the whole relationships mechanic could be a way that you visualize actual power that you get from following the people around you, and the growth option of erasing those relationships would be extra thematic.

and for the second one, that also seems like it'd be fine. you could also easily play up the "people are scared of their powers" angle as a way to prevent the players from just hulking out and solving all their problems that way (assuming by mutants you meant more like x-men type stuff)

I'm not getting how to use powers in game. On the book, you apply it by creating a "Power Set". For example, pyrokinesis 2d10. Then it seems like you divide the rest of dice between different "Techniques" - What i don't get is why there is a "Fine control 2d4" then.

Correct me if im wrong, but i'm seeing it as 3 factors mixing here.

1 - The "Set". What you call the raw power, this huge potential. "Pyrokinesis 210".

2 - The "Techniques". These different aplications of the power, more dependant of the circumstances and the thing you are trying to achieve.

3 - The "Control". This is the one that tells all of us how well you control your power.

First question: In this 3 aspects, should i follow a rule in order to avoid people, for example, being superb at raw power AND control?

Plus, my interest of doing a mutant underground game (X-Men resistance stuff). I can see...See more

for powers, what i usually do when creating characters for the games i run is to create one power that is the power set and then the rest of the powers are specifics like control or sub-techniques, but that's not the only way to do it. i only do it that way because i'm running my games at conventions so i want it to be easily understandable by the stranger who's playing the character.

you could just as easily have a character who has a bunch of unrelated powers, or not have the 'power set' power at all and only have the different sub techniques.

and for the people being good at raw power and control, that's totally up to you and the game that you're trying to run. making characters with obvious downsides is something that makes a character more interesting to me personally. it's perfectly possible for a character to have both, or neither. and mechanically the two don't even have to align, because in my example 2d4 fine control is actually not very useful in a Conflict, but you could...See more

yeah for doing that your options are:

either rewrite the rules and credit me in your book, or don't include the rules, just your setting, changes, etc and put a thing at the beginning saying that you need to use this game in order to play yours

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
