The Magician's House (DCC edition)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The city of Blackrock is in peril! An army of shrieking demons marches inexorably closer, less than a week away from putting its people to the knife. The Duke puts out a call: brave and resourceful heroes are needed to recover the sacred words that will unleash the power of the Sealing Stone. Words that have passed beyond the world - and so these adventurers must pass beyond the world, into…

The Magician’s House!

The Magician’s House is designed to challenge the party and delight the players with its whimsy. Within its enchanted walls, they will find doors that open to strange vistas: faerie gardens, abandoned cities behind the mirror, libraries of boundless size and crystal domes on the moon. They will encounter beings that interrogate and imperil, beguile and betray, entreat and entertain; children and ogres and aliens and magical statues.

The Magician’s House was designed as a one-off adventure for the Dungeon Crawl Classics role-playing game, but it can easily be inserted into an existing campaign. It’s appropriate for 3-6 characters of levels 1-3, although it could even serve as a very dangerous funnel for zero-level PCs.

What you get with The Magician’s House:

  • The adventure itself; a fantastical location crammed with whimsy, secrets and deadly peril.
  • Seven pre-generated characters for one-off adventures
  • Hooks and seeds for campaign play
  • Handouts for your players
  • Three new patrons!
  • Five new spells!
We got a review! Bryce Lynch from tenfootpole.org had this to say:

"I think it’s a delightful little romp through a gentleman magicians home."

More kind words from the Prince of Nothing at his Age of Dusk blog:

"If you are the type of GM that is willing to sink in an hour’s worth of time you have got yourself one hell of a thrill ride into realms of wonder and enchantment."

The Magician's House has been adapted to several great role-playing game systems! Check it out:

How well does this work as a one-shot (3, maybe 4 hours) for a DM who's never run DCC, and for players who are new to RPGs of any kind?

Sorry John for this incredibly late reply! I'm not sure how I missed the alert for your post...

As for your question, it can be completed in 3-4 hours, but I wouldn't guarantee that. I ran it at Gencon one year and one out of the four parties who tried it actually made it all the way through in the allotted time.

For starting DCC GMs and players, I'd say it's not too difficult, but you're probably best off sticking with a funnel. Magic in DCC is more complicated than in D&D, so it helps to get your feet wet with level zero PCs first. Other than that fact, which probably applies to any adventure in the system, I'd say it's not bad for first timers.

Hey Ray, just to say I’m also here following Bryce’s Review, and not just because Bryce liked it but mainly because I liked the themes and ideas. I’m having to be strong though and will hang in there and wait for the Flame Princess version, which will be a definite buy for me.

Congrats again on Ten Foot Pole.

Thanks for the encouragement, Neil! 5e should be out next week (it got pushed back because we decided to overhaul its layout), and Lamentations the week after. Hang in there! It's going to be the slimmest edition of them all, which I consider to be a definite plus.

Before I pick this up I thought I'd write and ask if you were planning to do an OSR conversion yourself? I'd hate to buy it, convert it, and then discover you were planning to release an OSR version!

Congrats on that great review at Ten Foot Pole!

Thanks, Howard! I was very flattered by Bryce's review. As for your question, I will be releasing conversions to several other systems: 5e (probably this coming Monday), then Lamentations of the Flame Princess, and finally my own homebrew (called Lark Fantasy; you can pick it up on this site for free). It sounds like the LotFP edition might be what you're looking for. I'll probably get that out in another 2 weeks or so.

Hi Howard, if you’re still available interested in a more old-school approach, be aware that I’ve just released the Lamentations edition of The Magician’s House. Enjoy!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
