Pugmire Core Rulebook Phone PDF

Be a good dog. Protect your home. Be loyal to those who are true. These are the words of the Code of Man.”

— Sister Picassa Collie, Shepherd of the Church of Man

Dogs have inherited the world, building the kingdom of Pugmire untold centuries after the Ages of Man are over. These dogs have been uplifted to use tools and language, and they seek to rediscover the ruins of the Old Ones. Some have learned to use the leftover technology of humanity, but they believe it to be magic handed to them by their lost gods. Others seek to create an ideal civilization, using a Code of Man compiled from ancient, fragmentary lore left behind by humanity. The world is dangerous and mysterious, but good dogs will persevere.

Some highlights of Pugmire include:

  • An evocative and mysterious setting that’s both family friendly and deep enough to create compelling stories.
  • A traditional fantasy rules system redesigned for streamlined play and easy creation of heroic dogs, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence.
  • A variety of callings and breeds that give access to several fun and interesting tricks.
  • Rival species to interact with, like cats and badgers, along with terrifying and dangerous monsters that roam the landscape.

Will you be a good dog?

Thank you for this! I have an iPhone and it looks good to me. This is perfect for the kind of players I have (they only need a rules reference like this during the game). Do you have plans for making one for Monarchies too?

This is an EXCELLENT example of the format. But... The experience is only as good as the PDF reader you have...
While I have yet to run Pugmire, I'm familiar with it, and planning to run it soon. This version (the phone PDF) is VERY readable on my BLU Studio C. I'm using the Google PDF and Drive PDF readers, and the links don't work there. But in Radaee PDF Viewer, they not only work, but work beautifully. (Radaee is my go to reader on Android. One quirk it has is it takes taping the link, then taping the follow link button, but that's standard for Radaee.)

William, Radaee isn't one of the readers we tested on Android.
Have you also tried Xodo? Our testers found it the best reader. Wondering what the pro's and con's of Radaee vs Xodo are.

Never tried Xodo. Note that the problems were not with Radaee, but were with Google's PDF readers. I've been using Radaee PDF Reader since about 2014; it's old, it's stable, and it handles large PDFs rather well since about 2014...
Features of Radaee include reflow mode, page, 2-page, scrolling vertical, scrolling horizontal, choice of slider or page previews on the scroll bar, customizable zoom limits, option to use volume buttons for page turn.
In short, it's feature set has meant that I've not needed Phone-optimized PDFs. Nor have I needed to look at replacements for it, as it runs on all my android devices (BLU Studio C, Samsung Note 10, Samsung Note Pro 12").
I also just tested sideloading the phone-PDF on my Kindle Oasis. While it supports PDF, it doesn't support the links. Looks really good, but has ~15mm white to either side.

I’ve downloaded the phone pdf twice now, and on both occassions it’s indicated it’s a 746 page book when I look at it on my phone, and it crashes every time I get to page 12.

Wow a PDF that's actually readable on iPhone SE! I could get used to that.

Hmm. Nice. But why not use epub? Pdf are a format that screams printing while epub is a computer format.

Henrik, good question. Epub format has its advantages for sure, but for most roleplaying game books, epub does not handle the rich graphic design nearly as well as PDF.

Steve, I agree with you on this. I have a couple of EPubs from Evil Hat, and it's awesome for text, but it does not seem to handle pages with pictures very well (and the Dresden Files rpg is loaded with pictures).

This PDF seems to be lacking a full set of bookmarks. Otherwise, it looks pretty cool.

Ian, a goal of the Phone PDF format is that it shouldn't require bookmarks to navigate. All navigation should be right on the pages themselves, so there's no need to even bring up a separate bookmarks menu - instead click the Contents link on the footer of each page and you're back to the navigation links for the title.

The phonePDF is amazing. Finally I can read a rulebook on my iPad without scrolling around. It's what PDF's should ALL be like.

Agreed, this is a great format, so easy to use and read. Some of the fonts are hard for me to read on the phone, though that isn't a issue with the format, just that the book wasn't originally designed for a small screen.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
