Distress Call - Stars Without Number Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

They had been mining deuterium for weeks, boring through the asteroids with their laser drills and loading the precious fuel into the cargo bay. It was a routine job, but a lucrative one. The Sawshark was one of the most advanced mining ships in the sector, equipped with cutting-edge technology and a loyal crew. They had nothing to fear, except boredom.

That changed when the distress call came. It was a short burst of static, followed by a garbled voice that sounded like a scream. Then silence. The Sawshark had gone dark, and no one knew why. The Cerberus outpost, the nearest station to their location, picked up the signal and alerted the authorities. They needed someone to investigate, someone brave and skilled enough to handle any situation.

That’s where you come in. You are a team of specialists hired by the Basirius Corporation, the owner of the Sawshark. You have been given a rescue shuttle and a mission: find out what happened to the Sawshark and its crew, and bring them back alive if possible. You don’t know what awaits you on board the ship, but you are ready for anything. You hope.

Stars Without Number Compatible - Distress Call is a sci-fi adventure module for the Stars Without Number role-playing game. In this adventure, the players will have to investigate a mysterious distress call from a mining ship that has gone silent in the asteroid belt. The ship, the Sawshark, is infected by a deadly virus sent by an alien hive mind that wants to assimilate all life forms. The players will have to face the dangers of the asteroid field, the hostile environment of the ship, and the infected crew members who have turned into mindless drones. Will they be able to rescue the ship and its crew, or will they fall prey to the hive?

This product contains:

  • An introduction with the background and premise of the adventure
  • Three possible adventure hooks that can link the adventure to your campaign
  • A mission intro with the briefing from the Cerberus outpost that received the distress call
  • A detailed map of the Sawshark with descriptions of each area and encounter
  • A list of NPCs and enemies with their stats and motivations
  • A conclusion with possible outcomes and rewards for the players
  • A set of optional rules and suggestions for running the adventure in different ways

Did you pull the Skill Check targets from Pathfinder too, because they're on the near-impossible side for SWN. Also, what would a PSU be converted into for SWN? The module itself is fine, but it seems to be a lazy port.

The DC of the skill checks are high in Starfinder also. They can be repeated however, but it takes a bit of time.
PSU or PCU?

The other commenter is saying that the issue is that this book is supposed to be for SWN, but the numbers don't make sense.

SWN uses 2d6 for skill checks, so asking a level 1 hit the numbers in the preview –like 14 or 17, shows that this isn't written for SWN.

Hello, thanks for the feedback.

We both agree that the DC of a skill check can be higher than 12.
The general idea behind the DC of the skill check related to the tasks a PC can accomplish in the adventure, are strictly connected to the Hostility Level of the "Sub-routine" (which is the "villain" in this adventure).
Each task can be repeated, and some task may affect the Hostility Level and thus produces some dangerous effects with the passing of time.

For example, a DC 14 skill check can be successful under extremely favorable conditions, with a relatively small number of attempts...using tools, receiving aid, having stat bonus or any other circumstance the GM finds appropriate.

About the DC 17, that is clearly my mistake where I missed to make a proper recalibration.

That is one of the most useless previews I have ever seen.

I noticed a few errors in the SWN version. Some of the new equipment and trade goods still have Satrfinder specific stuff in their description. The Generator is one of them and a lot of items are using bulk instead of Enc.

The Starfinder version also had some art that should have been in the SWN version the system diagram, and the Repair Robot Picture, the big room images, etc.

I don't play Starfinder and only looked at that version to do a quick comparison since that version was free.

Might be a good idea to do a Starfinder & SWN bundles for the other products so people can get both versions if all the art in one isn't going to be in another version.

The preview doesn't really give enough information. Just the cover, 2 credits pages, a table of contents and a full page image. But nothing else.

Also, the Rules System states that its Pathfinder/Starfinder, but the title says its Stars Without Number Compatible. Can you please clear this up. Is this for PF/SF or SWN?

It's SWN compatible. The Starfinder version is another product by the publisher. If you check out the publisher other product you can find the Starfinder version of it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
