Wicked Fate

The Reign of Men faces an age of change. Will it find a new path or fall to ruin?

Wicked Fate is a fantasy adventure supplement that brings John Wick’s Wicked Fantasy to the Fate Core system. In 2013, John Wick reinvented ten classic fantasy races through the world of Estevere, a unique Pathfinder setting that broke Kickstarter records and expanded what it meant to play elves, gnomes, kobolds, and more. After five years, Magpie Games is now ready to publish a full Fate Core conversion for that world, allowing fans to explore Estevere using the award-winning Fate system!

Wicked Fate gives you everything you need to play in the world of Estevere using Fate Core, including:

  • A complete introduction to the world of Estevere, a land of conflict that offers players an opportunity to define the coming age.

  • Fate Core templates for John Wick’s reinvention of ten fantasy races featuring elves, dwarves, gnolls, kobolds, and more.

  • Dozens of new aspects and stunts that bring the reimagined races to life in Fate Core beyond racial bonuses or feats.

  • A modified skill list for fantasy adventuring in Estevere that includes Command, a new social skill for Fate Core.

  • A new magic system for Fate Core that allows players to create custom effects on the fly without spell lists or mana pools.

Wicked Fate requires Fate Core to play. You can download Fate Core System as a Pay What You Want product through DrivethuRPG, and start playing right away!

From the back of the book (which I saw at a retailer) and a quick review, it appears that the book is very light on the world setting and very heavy on the "stats" of the various races. For $30 (book retail) or $10.50 pdf, I'm wondering if the book covers more of the game world or is just a glorified "look at these shiny 10 races" which could be better covered in a Fate Codex? I'm not knocking the work, but for someone who didn't play the Pathfinder world, is the campaign world fleshed out well in this version?

Hey Eric!

We've done a lot to bring all the information about the world together in one place in a setting chapter that opens the book. You'll find all the information about Estevere that's in Wicked Fantasy in one place there, arranged so that you can make sense of the world before reading about the different races.

That said, most of the book (10 chapters) is dedicated to outlining the races and providing mechanics to support them. We think it's a ton of awesome Fate work alongside a pretty cool setting, but if you're looking for lots of setting materials, you're only going to find a few pages per race.

Any chance of a hardcopy option?

The Magpie Games Newsletter that led me here mentioned a hardcopy pre-order from their website. Not sure if it will ever show up here.

Wicked Fate will actually only be available in softcover at this time. Sorry for the confusion!

Hi, Dakota. My understanding of the terminology is "softcopy" = "electronic only", "hardcopy" = "printed", with "hardcopy" including both "soft cover" (like a trade paperback) and "hard cover" (that you can rap on with your knuckles to make a sound).

With those definitions, Wicked Fate is available on DTRPG as "softcopy" only. And it looks like "hardcopy softcover" on Correct?

If I order from, can I get the "softcopy" PDF right away, and the "hardcopy softcover" in a few months?

Will the "hardcopy softcover" option ever be available on DTRPG?

Hi there, Keven-

Thanks for the clarification of your question! Indeed, 'softcopy' only is available on DTRPG, as it is intended for electronic files/downloads with option of print-on-demand service.

And yes, the 'hardcopy softcover' is what's available on our own website, (currently in pre-order stage) and purchase there will include a link to download the PDF version right away.

Hardcopy products produced by the publisher are neither available nor promoted here as per the DTRPG rules and guidelines.

Hope this answers your question more thoroughly!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
