Grim & Perilous Studios and Rogue Games Announces Its Next Tabletop RPG - COLONIAL GOTHIC: Grim & Perilous RPG

Colonial Gothic – the highly regard tabletop role-playing game of mystery, conspiracy and supernatural horror originally written by Rogue Games – will be re-launched in partnership with Grim & Perilous Studios in 2020. Branded COLONIAL GOTHIC: Grim & Perilous RPG, it will bring players into a grim & perilous world of American colonial survival horror, using the Powered By ZWEIHÄNDER d100 game engine and beautifully-illustrated cover to cover by Dejan Mandic.

In COLONIAL GOTHIC: Grim & Perilous RPG, your character will come from one of the Thirteen Colonies in America. The world is entering a new era, what Thomas Paine called the ‘Age of Reason’, slowly but steadily leaving behind old beliefs rooted in myth and superstition, and beginning to embrace new philosophies defined by logic, mathematics, and science. You’ll play a character who not only knows Magick is real, but also the unspeakable horrors it spawns – and these horrors are everywhere: witches who curse an isolated settlement, a vampire that followed European immigrants to the New World, or angry spirits terrorizing a Cherokee tribe. Whether your character is fighting in the frontier or fending off disease, you – along with others like you who know the truth – ceaselessly wage a hidden war against the forces seeking to plunge the world into chaos and darkness. There are none but you.

Grim & Perilous Studios’ founder Daniel D. Fox said, “I have always been fascinated by the history of America’s birth. From the siege of Boston, to the Sons of Liberty and the Freemasons, there are a rich tapestry of stories to tell of the New World. As we know, the history of the Thirteen Colonies was shrouded in conspiracy, mystery and intrigue. To tell these stories through the lens of grim & perilous role-play makes perfect sense for our brand. Rather than attempting to write our own Colonial-inspired game from the ground up, we found an easy partner in Rogue Games’ Colonial Gothic”.

“After several email exchanges with Rogue Games’ founder Richard Iorio, we realized that marrying ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG with Colonial Gothic was a no-brainer. We are now in the planning process to recast all of the rich content from the original line through the lens of  grim & perilous tabletop role-play. Our goal is to create an immense 600+ page book using refreshed designs, completely new illustrations and all-new content bolted onto the rules chassis of the Powered By ZWEIHÄNDER d100 game engine. Much like ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG, this all-in-one rulebook will ooze with flavor, fully-illustrated in gritty black and white detail from cover-to-cover. It will include a player’s handbook, gamemaster’s guide and fully loaded bestiary. COLONIAL GOTHIC: Grim & Perilous RPG will tell of an inspired history of the Colonists, married to mythological stories of the Americas and the supernatural horrors that followed the English to the New World. Grim & Perilous Studios has a deep respect of the complicated histories presented in the work, and we cannot wait to take on this exciting project.”

For 13 years, Colonial Gothic has explored Colonial America with heavily researched books, intricate plots, and a secret history that only a few know.

“To say Colonial Gothic is my passion would be an understatement. The real opportunities history offers not only strengthens the game but brings to it a gravitas fans have come to love,” says Richard Iorio, president of Rogue Games.

For Colonial Gothic, there is a secret history, and this history deals with events taking place in the shadows. These events play a role in the American colonies and in the American Revolution. Current fans of the game know the events are moving behind the scenes, and lurking in the shadows are agents with their own agenda. A war is coming. The Siege of Boston is lifted, and General Washington is leading the Continental Army to New York. The enemies are many, but as to who they are, you do not know.

“For fans of Colonial Gothic, it is because of your passion this partnership has become a reality.  It was your questions, your ideas, and our joint discovery of how history serves as the impetus of adventure," said Richard. “It is now our time to show others truly how great this game is. I cannot wait to get writing and bring you a new version of the game you love. If you thought you knew everything about the world of Colonial Gothic, you are in for a treat.”

We will reveal more about our plans for COLONIAL GOTHIC: Grim & Perilous RPG in the coming months, which you can follow on our home page and on social media. Please help us share this announcement online using these hashtags #ColonialGothic #ZweihanderRPG #GrimAndPerilous

WELCOME TO GRIM & PERILOUS GAMING

Winner of the ENnie gold Best Game and Product of the Year at Gen Con 2018, featured on Forbes, ranked one of the best-selling fantasy tabletop role-playing games at DriveThruRPG and having moved over 90,000 copies worldwide, ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classical tabletop role-playing games. This revised PDF edition is published in celebration with Andrews McMeel Publishing, and features a refreshed layout, new artwork, rules clarifications, color plates by Dejan Mandic and errata.

ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a game where your characters will:

  • Live in a gritty, ‘realistic’ fantasy world
  • Make morally grey decisions & enact vicious reprisals
  • Uncover insidious plots & political intrigue
  • Take part in heart-pumping chase scenes
  • Venture into the wilderness & survive its perils
  • Desperately fight in clandestine & open field combat
  • Defend themselves from injuries, madness & mutations
  • Encounter sanity-blasting creatures & their minions

Using the Powered By ZWEIHÄNDER d100 game engine, you will create grim characters, write perilous adventures and build your own low fantasy & dark fantasy campaigns. These rules are a perfect fit for Renaissance and medieval-styled adventures, too. You can also use this book to create your own homebrewed worlds, whether inspired by the works of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher, George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, Glen Cook’s Black Company, Myke Cole’s The Armored Saint, Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane, Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series or other ‘grimdark’-inspired media.

This all-in-one game includes most of what you need to play: a character creation guide, game mastery rules and a bestiary brimming with creatures both fair & foul. All that’s left are a few friends, pencils and a handful of dice.

ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG awaits, and the fate of your grim & perilous tale hangs in the balance!

“Zweihander has managed to do what so many retro-inspired RPGs currently fail at – it both intimately captures the spirit of a certain type of fantasy (in Zweihander’s case, the blood-soaked and mud-drenched “dark fantasy” genre) and escapes from its mechanical and social shortcomings. Too often, games inspired by what came before forget that this hobby has grown and changed, and hew too close to outmoded tropes and bad design. Zweihander manages by the grim machinations of its creator, Daniel D. Fox, to forge itself into something both eerily familiar and utterly belonging to the current moment in games. The diverse and beautiful art, the modern and purposeful writing and the powerful sense that this game is a game made not only to pay homage to what came before but to make something new of it all elevates Zweihander above every other retro-clone and nostalgia renaissance game out there. If I want a game about gritty losers trying to make it in a world out to get them, I’m going to reach for Zweihander every time.”

– Adam Koebel, co-creator of Dungeon World

Zweihander RPG won the golden ENnie for the best game in 2018, and to be honest, it deserves it. I’d heard a little about the game, but never had the chance to give it a go until recently. Zweihander considers itself a retroclone of Warhammer Fantasy 1st Edition, and if you were listening to me earlier, it’ll be clear to you why this is #1 for me.

First off, the book is huge. 692 pages of grim dark fantasy is an absolute delight to behold, let me tell you. Zweihander is without doubt a huge reading project to undertake, but the beauty of this game is it’s deceptive simplicity. While traditional D&D players may feel overwhelmed upon initial glance, the core mechanics of Zweihander are quickly and efficiently explained. For WFRP fans it’s like meeting an old friend.

Similarly to WFRP, Zweihander combat is intense and pulls no punches. Each round you begin with 3 Action Points, or AP, with which you can move, attack and pull stunts. The huge range of moves you can make within combat allows for parries, ripostes, doges and feints without the clunky advantage mechanics of the aforementioned Warhammer 4th Edition.

Zweihander doesn’t have an official campaign setting that comes in the book. The Grim & Perilous system is designed to inhabit any world to your liking – Game of Thrones, the Witcher, or even a historical medieval world. This means that it’s modular, and adaptable to a variety of situations, though it still includes rules and monsters for almost any given world you could imagine.

– Will Jones, Encounter Roleplay

I was always intrigued with Colonial Gothic RPG but just never enough to go all in. Now that Grim & Perilous Studios is involved, I'm all in and looking forward to buying the finished copy of the RPG when it becomes available. Out of curiosity will this be a Kickstarter campaign at some point?

Format
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
