Wallwichen: Three Clusters World Book 01

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Once, the Orion Arm was humanity's plaything, the Earth Alliance expanding by leaps across interstellar space. But as happens with all our species creates, it was destroyed through greed and lust for power and spite.

A thousand years on, space is still dark, but light sometimes flickers for a while in a little corner here or there. The dream of the Alliance dies hard, and over and over one world or another has tried to recreate a fraction of its glory, only to fail.

Enter the Three Clusters, where it’s happening again. Whether or not they succeed this time depends on you.

The Three Clusters Campaign is a "classic-style" Hard Space Opera game setting, using the PWYW Cepheus Engine rules. for which Wallwichen is the first world book. Players take on the character of merchants, mercenaries, explorers, or many others in a universe where every world is hand-crafted by a veteran game setting designer.

This introductory book is FREE and further volumes will be low-priced. Each book details one world, and all are designed to interconnect into a larger whole. Alternatively GMs can use it as a "drop-in" planet when they need a new, detailed destination quickly in their usual setting and haven't got the time to make one.

The Three Clusters setting is also OPEN for use in other works, including commercial products. See details on the Wallwichen book's copyright page.

Do you plan on creating a sort of wider setting as well, maybe stuff on history and such for this mileau?

As for "Hard Space Opera", since it's hard scifi, are there certain technologies that would be restricted, like this is a mileau where gravitics were never invented so reactionless engines and artificial gravity are the stuff of science fiction as far as humanity is concerned, even at the height of the Earth Alliance?

Will you have information on possible starfaring aliens as well?

Hi Warren,

Yes, this is the start of a wider setting. There will be an area about 8x8 parsecs containing 16 systems -- everything inside the Helmian Gap mentioned in the introduction to this book. I'll be putting up a star map soon, once Book 2 is done and there's more than one world publicly available to travel between. Outside of the Gap is to be left for a GM's preserve (with one possible exception) unless public demand strongly requests it. That way the Three Clusters can be used as a complete setting with the area outside the Gap ignored, or dropped into a larger setting somewhere on a frontier, depending on each individual referee's desire.

I picked the term Hard Space Opera as opposed to Hard SF to imply that, while the technology does stay relatively realistic, some fantasy tech like the items you mention are in the setting. The Cepheus Engine core rules' tech level tables will get you up to speed on that -- anything up to TL 12 is allowed. To draw an analogy with media, think...See more

Ah neat!

If this is spoils or reveal too much information, you don't have to tell me, but I'm wondering have you written down anything regarding the Earth Alliance itself, when it was a spacefaring nation?

What was the maximum TL of the Earth Alliance prior to its destruction here?

Were there a bunch of spacefaring aliens in this wider setting, like with the Third Imperium setting of Traveller, or did humanity find it much more barren here, with only a few spacefaring alien races at best, like one or two or something?

Do you have an idea on what kind of government the Earth Alliance had?

Hi Warren,

I can give you a few clues...they reached TL 12 as per the CE rule book, which gave them Jump-3 and associated tech lower than that like gravitics and ship-portable fusion weapons. It would not break the setting to assume higher or even lower if that was your preference, though the Three Clusters has only made it back to TL 11.

Aliens were common, with the usual mix of space-faring species and less-advanced types. The Alliance was human-dominated but friendly to other species in their space that wanted to contribute. There were (and are) other species that dominated their own areas of the Orion Arm but they'll stay off-stage unless a GM wants to introduce one in their own campaign. But as with Earth Alliance tech It definitely wouldn't break a campaign to make the galaxy more barren as you suggest it might be.

(Crossing the beams of aliens and technology, there have been many species in the past that roamed this area of space, some of them very high-tech indeed....See more

Interesting thing, in the In The Dark book, jump drives don't require fuel, just electricity from capacitors or the fusion plant.

Here however, later on in the setting, jump drives apparently require fuel since there is mention of "drop tanks" for some ships.

I wonder what caused the changeover, tech wise. :D

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
