Cowboy World

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Cowboy World is a pen and paper role playing game about badass people kicking butt in the Old American West.

It is based on the Apocalypse World system.

It focuses on drama and conflict.

It is rules light.

Character creation is fast. You can play any genre-appropriate character you like.

It has no hit point system. Combat is fast, cinematic and deadly.

And if you want to play a game of weird steampunky horror set in the Old West, the last chapter, Going Weird, transforms Cowboy World into just that.

What a great game ! Nice work !

I've just one question : because the stats are different between the page 88 and 92, which one do we have to keep in mind for the weapons harm modifiers ?

I bought the game, both pdf and softcover book. It is amazing.
Very well done work.

I tried to contact the author Wynand Louw to the email address I found on the book, but I have no response. Can be the email is wrong?

Giovanni, perhaps it is you who are oblivious to the genre. Some of us might play games about life over 100 years ago, because we appreciate the values of that life, including a historically accurate view of Indians. Regardless, thank you for the scathing assessment, it convinced me to buy the product.

This game seems totally oblivious to the genre that it is using. In 2019, it is inexcusable to blithely publish a document with the line "The Magical Indian: OK, lets face it: The Natives know some serious mystical XXX. Or at least they think they do." I am astounded how uncritical this document is in regards to Native American issues and how it blindly accepts racism that is over 100 years old.

Hi Giovanni.

The sentence you refer to is almost a verbatim quote from Adam Sandler's movie "The Ridiculous Six"

I bought this because it sounded cool, and to laugh at Giovanni's childish attitude. It's a game and the author has creative freedom. No one forced you to buy it either, Giovanni. :)

I am a big fan of PbtA rules and games, but I am a big fan and maniac of Western settings (I was working on Deadlands for some time). I have or read most of western RPGs that were published, I have a lot of books about that times, weapons, daily life, kitchen etc. Even my wedding was done in old west theme - we had costumes that copied Old West costumes. So, I think, that even that I am from Poland, I know what I am talking about. I found CW when it had a deal of the day (sorry Wynand, you need more links and advertisements :) ) and I was a bit afraid that no Roles may be a problem. But after reading it, all my fears were gone.

It is a GREAT Western game, and the part of Weird Western is very good for a person who played Deadlands (different rules and settings) for 22 years now. I really can say it is a great Western game and I highly recommend Cowboy World!

Just let me say - I had no other option, but as a publisher, I had to publish Cowboy World in Poland. Good games have to be...See more

Here seems to be something wrong with the deal of the day price. That is the 60% off price is the same as the original one.

At the time of my writing the digital version did not have the lower price either. Don’t know if it was my browser or a general problem but it seems to have been fixed now.

The Gunslinger (the first book in the series) was a definitive inspiration for Cowboy World Weird; The idea of demons possessing corpses and empty men, and talking ravens were lifted directly from that book. And of course, there is more than one quote from The Gunslinger in Cowboy World.

Awesome little book.
But i have a question regarding weapons:
Single Action Revolver - Near - +1Harm
Shotgun - Near - +0Harm
Bow - Far - +2harm
Rifle - Far +2harm

Seems a little bit odd to me. And no weapon tags? No Double Action Revolver?

Hi Patrick

Thanks for the positive comment!

You have to remember that Cowboy World is a narrativist, not a simulationist game. This means that the mechanics are more abstracted in order to serve the emerging story instead of simulating a gunfight. For this reason, the game mechanism are not very granular. There is very little mechanical difference between different types of weapons, so there is no point in listing all types of possible weapons that were available in that period, as other more simulationist games, like Aces High do. Also, one roll does not represent one shot fired, but one significant outcome.

This does not mean that there is no difference in the game between single and double-action revolvers. There is, but it is in the narration and not in the mechanics.

If a character has a single-action revolver, the player might say, "I run across the street, fanning my revolver to provide covering fire for Jack"

So why did I list...See more

Thx for your quick response!
Absolutely legit.
But that doesn't really answer my question regarding those rather strange weapon statistics that ARE in the book. Please look above.

For example a Shotgun with +0 and a Revolver with +1, both Near?
Shouldn't it rather be Shotgun +2 and some balancing with a +reload Tag or something?

The +0 for the shotgun and +1 for the revolver are the modifiers that a character has to add to the harm roll:

"When the GM tells you to take lethal or non-lethal harm, roll + Body + modifiers"

The lower the modifier, the bigger the chance that you will fail the roll (6 or less after all modifiers are applied), and failing the roll is bad, while success is good. So weapons with lower modifiers do more harm. Remember there are no hitpoints in Cowboy World.

Reloading etc happens in the narration since there is no turn sequence or action economy in the game mechanics. But yes, it may have been a good idea to add the "reload" tag!

Thanks again for the comments.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
