Power Outage: Core Guide Book

Selected Option:

Hi,  Bebarce here.  I just wanted to post an important update regarding Power Outage.  I am in the firm belief that there shouldn't be barriers for kids to experience the joy of games.  From March 15th until yesterday (April 14th) I had made Power Outage available for free.  I am now returning the price to $10.  HOWEVER, as mentioned below if you are an organization that could use Power Outage to support children reach out to me and I'll get you a copy for free or at cost.  The new addition is that if you are currently experiencing financial restraints and are looking to game with kids or just need it for other reasons.  Reach out to me, and I'll get you a copy.

You can reach me at bebarce (at) gonerdy dot com or via twitter (at) bebarce

Let's all be heroes together.

If you run a school, library, hospital, a charitable, or social program that supports children but are hard-pressed on funding, reach out to me on twitter (at) bebarce and I will work with you to get you a copy(or copies) for free or at print/ship costs.  I will also reach out on your behalf to companies that produce or sell accessories.

Outage Map

Have you ever sat at a tiny table drinking tea with a queen? Have you fought off a horde of couch pirates with a valiant young captain by your side? Have you ever searched the wilds of a backyard jungle for buried treasure with a team of tiny explorers?. If so, then you’ve already played this game. This book is your guide to play in the world of Power Outage.
Power Outage is a world where kids get to be heroes, and you get to guide them on their journeys. It’s a sprawling landscape that gives you complete control of the adventures you want to create. If you’re interested in playing a game that feels like a classic comic book, try the futuristic neo-Japanese metropolis of Shorai City. If you want to run a gritty detective mystery, then plumb the depths of the Atomnyy Zavod’s atomic-lit alleys. Want to attend a school of sandwich wizards in the heart of a sentient forest? The Overgrowth is calling.
The Power Outage Guidebook includes everything you need to run or play a game with kids or adults. This book features:
  • A complete unique set of game mechanics that features a choose-your-own-adventure CAPE system (Combat, Alternative, Puzzle, Exploration) allowing you to easily create adventures, or travel through a published series.
  • Simplified flexible and open-character creation that allows kids to create a unique hero tailored to their preferences.
  • Over 100 villains and henchmen, plus the rich history, geography, plot hooks and roll tables for 5 different unique regions allow you to create any kind of adventure you want.
  • A book loaded with puns and gags that make playing fun for kids and adults.
  • Guidance on accessibility for children with disabilities, differentiation, and use of the game as an educational or counseling aid.
  • A full adventure featuring 5 sessions worth of adventure in Shorai City.
  • So much more…
So start gaming with your kids today! Ignite the spark of imagination and create a new generation of tabletop gamers.

“For many of us parents, the Holy Grail of game design is the child-friendly RPG. With Power Outage, Bebarce El-Tayib has launched a well-equipped expedition upon that sacred quest, which demonstrates that his love of gaming is only matched by his love of children. But it’s left for you, the players, to imagine how it will end!” - Jason Walters, Indie Press Revolution

That hardcovers are showing as pay as you want is that intended?

If you put a small amount in, it'll tell you what the minimum is. A physical book can be PWYW, but the minimum amount is the amount Lightning Source charges to print the thing.

And the publisher provides a "Suggested Price."

This was originally accidental, but I opted not to change it incase the physical copy was more accessible to people. I'd prefer not to profit off of this situation, with parents trying to make kids feel at ease. There is still a minimum on physical copies for printing and shipping.

Fantastic product aimed at introducing children to tabletop gaming! A fun setting coupled with a gorgeous book, this has been an enjoyable project to follow and I'm so happy that it's completed.
Not to mention the PUNS that anybody can appreciate.

Thank you for the constructive feedback! I've fixed the preview to show pages now. While I still don't think the preview does the entire book justice, it does include the entire quickstart guide and intro. Hope you like what you see, either way, thanks for being awesome!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
