Avalon’s Solo Adventure system is a way for you to play 5e D&D by yourself, where you get to control a party of adventurers as they seek out glory and great deeds.

 

The system is usable for:

 

* anyone who has ever wanted to play a solo 5e D&D adventure.

* anyone who has ever wanted to learn the rules for 5e D&D by playing a fully realized solo version of the game.

* anyone that has wanted to play a solo 5e D&D adventure that takes their characters from acquiring their first adventure at an inn all the way up to defeating their evil nemesis.

* anyone who has ever wanted to play a fully cooperative game without a Gamemaster sitting on the opposite side of the table.

* And anyone who just has an hour or two and wants to play a game of 5e D&D.

 

It’s all here: the inns, the monsters, the treasures, the secrets, and the story!

 

The Avalon Solo Adventure system (ASA from now on) will offer you a fully realized campaign world, complete with towns, wilderness travel, set dungeons, randomized combat, special encounters, and a story—everything you need for a full campaign of 5e D&D.

 

Every aspect of the 5e D&D will be used during the course of the adventures of ASA, including combat, of course, but also skill use, character interaction, and the buying and selling of equipment within a limited kingdom economy.

 

While “solo” is in the title of this system, that in no way means that this is an adventure for a single character. Rather, it is a system designed for a solo Player. That Player will take command of an entire adventuring party and will guide them all throughout the campaign.

 

The ASA rules will simulate the place of the Gamemaster, with randomized tables governing the game play, providing surprise, and adding variety to the adventure. Since much of the content is randomly generated, a Player can even play the same adventure more than once and the adventure will play out very differently. However, Avalon Games will be providing many ASA adventures in order to provide as many different solo experiences to you, the Player, as possible.

 

In order to play ASA, you will need the ASA Base Rulebook and one of the ASA adventure books. You will also need the books for 5e D&D.

 

ASA is made specifically for solo party-adventuring, but it should be noted that the game can be played by a group of Players. The only thing ASA can’t really have is a Gamemaster since the system is specifically designed to randomly generate the adventure. It can, however, benefit from a Referee during group play (although it does not need one). Should someone in the group want to perform that aspect of the Gamemaster’s role, a Referee can add a layer of additional challenge to the game, since a Referee helps to maintain the core integrity of a group game. It might be a great way for a fledgling Gamemaster to attempt to learn how to arbitrate for a group of Players.

I have only used the core d&d book e5.
I have more or less stopped playing. Occasional play but use the Tunnel and Trolls rules as I don't think the effort you have to put in is worth the hassle especially when it comes to d&d combat. If you are looking for expansions, drive thru have plenty.

Ok, I purchased the core set, out of curiosity, where do you go next once completed? I see Town Guard book one, Royal Wedding, A witch is born. Are these adventures separate or linked together? I also see mentions of child of destiny series book 2 and 3, which is book #1? What is recommended after playing the core adventure? Thanks!

So there. Are all kinds of directions to go in.

The Child of Destiny series starts where the main story adventure in the core game leaves off, starting with Royal Wedding, then on to A Witch is Born and next Terror at Raven Crest. More adventures in that series will be released, one a month the next four months.

Other adventures are the two Town Guard books, the first of three sidetrack adventures books.

We plan for two new adventure books each month for the next two years.

No it would end up cost a huge amount for the four books. We are talking well over 500 pages and 40 plus full color battle maps.

I am not seeing enough commentary from the publisher regarding the somewhat negative discoveries from buyers in this discussion. Why...??

My question is do I need the Published Adventures or can I play a 5e game on the fly and/or prepare my own solo sessions/campaigns using ASA?

The Author told me in an e-mail that he isn't automatically notified whenever someone posts a new comment here (which is weird, 'cause you only need to tick the 'Follow this discussion' box...) and he rarely checks.

I'll answer your question in his stead: this product includes a ready-to-play adventure, but you can't really prepare your own scenarios with it or improvise games - it's not that type of a solo system (i.e., it has more to do with the 5e solo gamebooks than it does with Mythic).

AsA uses a self contained world to tell its stories, which provides adventures within that fantasy setting were you will use the 5e D&D system. You will not be able to use it in other settings.

As for any issues, that is Avalon’s fans helping us to make the game better, not as critizuim of the publisher or our games in general.

Wow...if it included the core rules and other items that were included in the kickstarter, id buy now. But 19.99 without all that is a bit steep...particularly with errors having been spotted already. No thanks

Hi, I've noticed several errors so far: the King's Guard I quest tells you to 'set up the battle as shown', but nothing is actually shown (page 183 or 184 of Avalon_solo_adventure.pdf). It seems the combat layout for this encounter is missing.

Also, the stats for Red Hook (page 43 or 44 in that same pdf) seem kinda weird: he has a spell prepared twice (that's how it was done in 3e, not in 5e. In 5e you prepare each spell you want only once and then can cast it up to the number of spell slots you have for that level). Also the damage stats for his weapons are weird (should be 1d8+1 for the sword and 1d4+1 for the hook, assuming the hook is not a Finesse weapon). Furthermore, he has "Ranger Archetype" listed under his special features, but it's not mentioned what archetype he actually is and what features he picked up from it (which is an important omission, as depending on his archetype, he'd get some useful abilities)

Actually, there seem to be plenty of encounters in the encounter book that say "Set up the fight as shown" but fail to actually show the setup... in fact, every single encounter in the encounter book has this problem...

unless for every single one of them the player is supposed to build the map by themself? The rules do mention this, but I think the wording "set up the fight as shown" is misleading in that case, as it makes me expect an image to be shown. Maybe it's just me, though. ^^'

Another one: Some results on the Daily Encounters tables in Avalon_solo_adventure.pdf (page 11 or 12) refer to "Pirates", but there is no such encounter in this book nor in the Book of Encounters...

The number of spells prepared on some NPCs also seems weird. For example, the Black Nun (p. 216 in Avalon_solo_adventure.pdf) has 2 regular spells prepared (domain spells don't count), even though she should have 3 (1 for her level and 2 for her Wis modifier). Did the person writing the stats perhaps think that you prepare a number of spells equal to your number of spell slots (another holdover from 3e)?

For the pirate encounter I use the two boats roll for the number of pirates. Then roll for the 9 zones. Because it is an ambush your party is going to be roughly in the middle of the ship which would be zone 5.on page 14 he explains that not all encounters have a battle map and the battle maps that are appropriate for that encounter can be used, hence the two boats. Hope this helps.

At the bottom of page 3 there is a note telling you to use the bandit description for pirates. I use the non road encounter on page 13. I must admit the books are making you work a little harder. I have to think it through more or less like GM would do.

Yeah, that note was added after my comments. Also "the books are making you work harder" seems like a sugar-coated way of saying "we're good at writing adventures, but kinda sloppy at editing and proofreading", to be honest. Sure, you'll always have to ad-lib with this kind of game, and that's fine. But it shouldn't be such a mess in its organization.

I am still working my way through the game and don't want to be too harsh too early, but yeah totally agree with you. Was disappointed that a pirate description had not been added.

Hope you manage to get some enjoyment out of the books and Avalon do actually do an update that sorts the mess out.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
