Gunderholfen… Ancient, abandoned dwarf hold, battleground of arch-liches, cultist base, wizards’ playground, heroes’ bane and treasure-seekers’ tomb. Gunderholfen is a classic, old school exploratory sandbox-style mega-dungeon consisting of ten levels, a mini-campaign setting and one demi-plane.

This mega-dungeon and mini-campaign setting is designed for character levels 1-10+. It is compatible with any OSR system. Play it as an integrated, complete mega-dungeon campaign or just pick out individual levels to run as separate dungeons. Gunderholfen includes the following:

  • 10 main dungeon levels consisting of 22 sub-levels and numerous sub-areas, with approximately 930 keyed locations, all detailed in 40 maps.
  • 1 demi-plane level.
  • A mini-campaign setting insertable into any existing campaign that includes a detailed overview of Longfelt, a nearby city complete with NPCs, including possible patrons for PCs, places of interest, encounter tables and rival factions.
  • 32 encounter tables with full monster stats for each level of the dungeon and the surrounding lands.
  • Extensive ready to play lists of NPCs including 10 pre-generated NPC parties that can be used as foes or allies.
  • 1 mini-side adventure.
  • A brief overview of the history and background to Gunderholfen.
  • Rules for a new class of priest including 18 new spells.
  • Lots of new monsters and magic items.

Note: For ease of use during play, separate booklets for maps and encounter tables can also be purchased in both PDF and softcover formats.

JPEG maps for VTT play, with GM only information removed are included with the PDF file.

Hello I was curious about one thing what Exp system did you use for this? How much exp for each level? Asking since everyone has something different and plan on getting this soon to run with shadowdark and want to use the same exp system you used in this to make running the game easier :-) thanks again for any info

It uses the 1e XP tables (almost identical to the OSRIC tables, which is free as a pdf if you need it). I hope that answers the question, let me know if it doesn't.

Hi, I'm extremely familiar with OSR and d20-based rules, but your listing of AC0 in the monster entries has me a bit confused.

Is that intended as the monsters' to-hit needed? e.g. kobolds (AC0 = 21) need 21 to hit AC zero. Thus, they get -1 to hit? And hobgoblins with AC0 = 18 have +2 to hit.

Do I have the essence of that?

I'm using the 1e tables with the repeating 20s in mind, so a kobold needs a 20 to hit AC1 and would also need a 'natural' 20 to hit AC 0. I've just noted this 'natural 20' as 21 instead, so you can do the THAC0 calculation on the fly. Hence a kobold vs AC 3 would be 21 - 3 = 18 target number, rather than listing the THAC0 as also a 20 where the target number to hit AC 3 could be mistaken for 20 - 3 = 17, which is incorrect in 1e. Hope that clarifies it. With regards to hobgoblins, 18 is their THAC0. It wouldn't be correct to say they're +2 to hit unless you're comparing them against another creature with a THAC0 of 20, but if you're using a target 20 system they are indeed +2 to hit.

It's a great product, but if you ever do get around to an updated version of it please can you amend the Ointment of Skin Change so that result number 2 in the table is a different colour to the one at present (maybe go with purple?)

Bought this based on the Questing Beast review of the book; Glad the PDF is only $10. Won't be running it as the maps in the PDF only display in Acrobat Reader and it's a 400+ page PDF with no hyperlinks in 2023. How DriveThruRPG doesn't offer help/info/training/tools for the authors publishing through their site is a big let down on their part. It looks like a wonderful product, and it looks like you spent alot of time on it, but there's no way I can run it.

Hi Mathew, thanks for your interest. I would like to put hyperlinks in an updated version, but I've got other projects I'm prioritising at present. At the time in 2019 I never thought anyone would actually run something from a pdf, I always (and I mean ALWAYS) print things out to run; hyperlinks or not, a pdf is too slow and cumbersome for me to handle deftly enough at the table. I assumed at the time of publishing that everyone else was also of the same mind set, I guess times have changed. Other modules of similar size from the same time are also not hyperlinked, so I'm not unique in this failing. My other modules are hyperlinked, and I'll get around to this one too. I'm not sure about the image display issue, I can view the maps in other pdf apps without any problems.

Happy gaming.

Hello, so I've been dming gunderholfen weekly for almost 6 months now. They don't always go in, sometimes spend sessions in Longfelt or doing something else. But a few months ago they encountered the face on level 2 that can change copper into silver. Since then they go in with carts and hirelings to get as much silver as possible (though they still face casualties from random encounters). I was just wondering if this is how it is intended?

Ha ha, they sound like smart players! They will of course still have to locate copper pieces to change into silver, and in some cases, that's in more short supply than gold is in old-school campaigns. My players used the mouth to give their wealth a small bump, but seeing that silver is worth very little at all, it was never really worth devoting too much attention to. If you think it's being abused of course, make its magic 'run out' or something similar. Thanks for playing the adventure, i hope your players can get down to level 10!

No certainly not worth the price of a car! I've seen that there are other products having the same issue, so I think there are technical issues with Drivethru at the moment.

I like what I'm reading, but I run my games from PDF exclusively and the pdf does not have bookmarks and is locked down so that I can't make my own. Navigating a pdf this big without bookmarks is a lot slower while I'm at the table trying to run things.

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback, I understand your pain. Unfortunately, when I put this together I had no idea that so many people ran VTT games, or would choose to use a PDF while playing, as this was something I never (and would never) do myself. My pre-bat-plague experience was always at the table top and I always printed out PDFs (even big ones) that I wanted to use. Once I became aware that so many people bought and used PDFs, I chose to put bookmarks in my follow-up work Darkness at Nekemte. I will consider putting bookmarks in Gunderholfen sometime in the future, but that will take time.

Hi Kelly,

If you purchased the pdf previously, you can download the updated file; V4 should have been replaced in your library with V5. Some maps have been cleaned up and a few elements added, the written content is unchanged.

Why does Evadne want info on the location she is willing to pay for in the patron's section?

Hi Kelly,

If you are referring to Level 4D areas 16-22, there is no necessary reason as to why she wants to discover the location. That she is willing to pay money for the information indicates that she at least knows that the secret complex exists and wants to know how to get there. As to the why, that’s up to the GM. Maybe she believes there is a magic item or something else of interest there; maybe she’s looking for somewhere to set up a base in the dungeon and has heard rumours of the secret complex. Whatever best fits in with the individual campaign.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
