Low Fantasy Gaming is a tabletop RPG built for gritty adventures in low or moderate magic settings. It has simple rules, dangerous combat, flexible PC customisation, and mysterious, unpredictable magic. Designed for short, episodic adventures in sandbox worlds, LFG provides the mechanics and tables needed for easy GM improvisation. It’s a heady mix of the best old school, modern, and new game design, wrapped around a familiar d20 core.

Main Features

  • Full Colour and B&W Line Art versions.
  • 9 Classes: Artificer, Barbarian, Bard, Cultist, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue & Magic User; only two of which involve magic.
  • 12th Level Max eliminates the most powerful spells, and keeps the mightiest monsters scary.
  • Unique Features: every 3rd level design your own PC ability in conjunction with your GM. Don't want to make your own? Choose from 36 examples instead.
  • Roll Equal or Under for attribute checks (including degrees of success), making every stat point matter.
  • Skills provide access to a level based Reroll Pool, smoothing the fickleness of d20 probability distribution.
  • Willpower & Perception attributes replace Wisdom.
  • Diminishing Luck attribute replaces saving throws and powers some Martial Exploits.
  • Minor, Major & Rescue Exploits on top of damage, not in lieu, promote improvised stunts and moments of greatness.
  • Dangerous Combat: Dropping to zero hp requires a roll on the Injuries & Setbacks table and healing is delayed by 1d3 minutes (magical or otherwise). Players don't roll to find out if their PC is All Dead or Mostly Dead until the battle ends and someone checks the body.
  • Party Retreat & Chase rules allow the GM to throw whatever makes sense at the party, unshackling them from balanced encounters and quarantined zones.
  • 5 minute Short Rests allow PCs to attempt Willpower checks to recover hit points and class abilities, encouraging the party to push on rather than camp.
  • Long Rests take 1d6 days (or 1d4 in a safe, comfortable environment), mitigating the nova, rest, repeat problem for adventures with long periods between battles (eg: wilderness treks).
  • Dark & Dangerous Magic tests and Divine Rebuke tests make all spell casting inherently uncertain. No at-will, teleport, mind reading or resurrection magic. Magic Users are less reliant on spells, proficient in one handed weapons and light armour.
  • Evocative Spells: Spells have been tweaked and renamed, eg: Silent Image, Invisibility, Magic Missile and Hold Monster are instead Shadows & Dust, A Wisp Unseen, Lash of Unerring Pain and Crush of the Warp.
  • Rare Magic Items, with obvious and discreet attunements, that unlock as their owners level up.
  • GM Tables for Weather, Exploration Events, Random Encounters, Traps, Treasure, Disease, Madness, Tavern Brawls, Hirelings, Mass Battle, Naval Combat, NPC Quirks, Rival Adventurers, Blackpowder, and more.
  • 130+ Monsters including effective Boss Monster options (eg: Off Turn Attacks match the party's action economy, and Stronger Luck grants saves even when a save is not normally permitted), plus Custom Monsters guide.
  • Online Play Support: an LFG character sheet is available for online play via Roll20, and a Fantasy Grounds sheet is expected by 31 Dec 2019.
  • Open Game Content: 99% of LFG text is "Open Game Content" under the Open Game Licence. Want to make your own adventures or expansions for LFG and sell them? Go right ahead!
  • Character Sheets: Illustrated Colour and B&W character sheets (including a B&W Form Fillable PDF) are available as free downloads via DTRPG
  • GM Screen: 4 panel GM Screen PDF is available for free download via DTRPG.
  • Starter Adventures: Three starter adventures are available for free download via DTRPG (Revelry in Northgate, Call of the Colossus, and Gift of the Silent God).
  • Rules as Guidelines. The GM is the final authority on all LFG rules, which are expected to be tweaked to fit table preferences.

Can you tell me what the recent revision to the colour pdf file did?

1st file: 'Low_Fantasy_Gaming_Deluxe_Ed_(Colour)_Final_v5_1.5.19'
Updated to: 'LFG_Deluxe_(Colour)_DIGITAL_11.8.19'

Because try as I might, I cannot spot any changes to the text!

Anthony yes, image correction to the Barbarian pic on p.20 (already correct in the print books, but missed in the PDF). No text changes :)

Such a subtle change, I'd never have spotted that!

So am I right that the printed book doesn't have any typos or other errors, because it was printed-on-demand from a pdf style master?

I think you were correct to put more effort into making sure that file was perfect, as pdfs can be updated so easily.

I was reading your list of suggested worlds for LFG and I wondered if you think that Allansia/Titan - the world setting of the Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks is a good fit?

Yes the print books used a different master file. As for the Fighting Fantasy world of Titan, yes I think so. It's been a long while since I read the FF books (but indeed, they were my first intro to fantasy dice based gaming!), but my memory is magic is relatively rare in FF.

Oh man, having a tough time choosing...could you do a video for each version, just flicking through them and showing the difference in the art? I know it's a bit pedantic but it looks so stunning I want to make sure I get the one that tickles the ol' creatives the most :)

First of all, those are some beautiful-looking books! Excellent job from everyone involved. Two questions come to mind about the PDF option:

Is the PDF the color or B/W version? (or do we get both?)

Is it permissible to copy-paste relevant parts of the rules to a forum for play-by-post games with players who might not be inclined to purchase the rules? For instance spell descriptions or character generation rules?

Thanks for the kind words Janne. You get both the Colour and B&W PDF files with the digital option :)

As for posting parts of the book online, I can't say. Pickpocket Press is bound by the Open Game Licence which appears in the back of the PDF/book. I suspect you could reproduce parts of the book as long as you in turn comply with the terms of the Open Game Licence - but I can't give you legal advice - you need to obtain your own independent advice. Sorry I can't be of more help on that question.

Hi Jim - yes 90% of the b&w art will be different art from the colour version. The other 10% are uncoloured b&w line art versions of the colour.

Hello!

You are saying, that the PDFs are draft only.

I have a few questions to make sure as I am printing my PDFs for usage:
- The text itself will not change in any major way (I see the potential for correctin Typos or such), right?
- The only change will be the addition of artwork - will that change the layout of the final PDFs (I consider printing the current PDFs and then just printing the changed pages later on)?
- If I buy the PDFs now, the final PDFs will be an update of this product, right? That is, when the final PDFs are out, I can just download them from my library.

Yours,
Deathworks

Hi Ranjith,

Yes the text will not change in any major way (correction of typos, maybe some high level heading tweaks - font that matches the cover and darker colour for better contrast).

Artwork additions will be the major changes. There may however also be the addition of an extra page to ensure correct spread (eg: that the treasure chapter pic is opposite the start of the treasure chapter in the printed hardcover). If that occurs, page number references will change throughout. Also, there is no index in the draft (requires final page numbers).

Given the above it may be prudent not to print anything out yet. The final PDFs are expected by 31 March 2019, by which time page numbers will also be settled.

Yes the final PDFs will be a PDF update, downloadable from your library. Purchasers will receive an email notification of such when that occurs (as normal).

I hope this helps, and thanks for reaching out.

Could you:

a) offer a preview file (hopefully one that's not just the cover and credits page) :D

b) give a very brief rundown of the *major* differences between LFG Deluxe and LFG "Standard"? (e.g What's been included or changed to bump your page count of LFG from 184 for LFGD's 287 pages? Inclusion of art is one thing, I'm guessing.)
Customer avatar
stephen G February 03, 2019 3:44 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Hi David, yes I've added a 20 page preview starting from Contents (B&W version - cant seem to control which version DTRPG chooses to preview).

The main additions between the Original and Deluxe Eds are: full colour, all 9 classes in one book, 36 example Unique Features, tweaked Fighter class, expanded DDM table, Divine Rebukes & Atonement tables, all spells renamed & some tweaked, extra monsters adn improv monster table, expanded exploration framework, Traps, Mass Battles, Hirelings, Blackpowder weapons and ship battles, NPC quirks/names, rival adventurers. That's most of it. A few extra rules or tweaks to rules (eg Stand Up from prone costs half move, Initiative variants). Hope this helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
