Grim & Perilous Solo Rules - Supplement for Zweihander RPG

Why You Need This Book

Because all role-playing in improv and whether you are playing solo or more commonly as GM to a group of players, there are times when you will have to improvise. These tools will guide you through the improv with prompts to inspire your imagination. They will allow you to spin stories and create plots that you had not even considered, without prep or planning.

Solo Engine for ZWEIHÄNDER

This rules supplement allows you to play ZWEIHÄNDER without a Games Master. Questions about your the world and the actions of all the NPCs that you would normally ask your GM are handled by a few simple tables and one or two dice rolls.

Rules are provided for simple and complex questions, scene objectives, NPC reactions all using native ZWEIHÄNDER mechanics.

Additionally, you get some useful record sheets to keep track of your solo adventures and an example actual play of the first few scenes of a new character's adventure.

This work is derived from One Page Solo Engine by Karl Hendricks v0.2 CC BY-SA 4.0

Do these rules talk at all about balancing adventures/encounters for a single character or adapting existing material for a solo character?

No, it doesn't, yet. There is a new edition coming out this summer that does address scaling adventures, reward points and published adventures.

Hello Peter!

I really like this solo engine!

I'd like to point at two things I'd like to see improved:
On page 5 the first column should be the third(the order is mixed up).
And I'd like to have a blank version of the lists on page 12-14.

It would be really great if you could incorporate these things!

Thx and have a great day!

The lists have been corrected. When the new edition comes on this summer, there are blank versions of the lists included. You will get the update automatically when it is released. Just check your Library for updated files.

Hi Peter,
thank you so much for this! With my limited gaming time capacity this is perfect tool.
Just one question regarding Augur tool: there is 26 lines to choose using Degrees of Success. How can you get that high? The highest I can get is 22 (up to 12 from Attribute Bonus, and up to 10 from the Attribute Test). Am I missing something? Sorry about this!

I have a really lame answer to this. When I was playtesting I was only using five or six degrees. When it game to refining the rules I asked Daniel D Fox on the Zwei discord server what the maximum degrees could be and he came up the the figure that is in the book. How you get there I have no idea but it must be theoretically possible.

Sorry, I cannot give a game mechanical answer.

Thanks for this. I purchased ZWEIHÄNDER to primarily play solo so you have saved me a LOT of work. :) I intended to use Mythic fate charts and a wilderness hex crawl. Was waiting on receiving the physical book before starting work on it though. I look forward to reading your take on it all.

You are welcome!

This solo engine is much faster and lighter than Mythic, although it certainly borrows from those rules. If you are happy with the heavy lifting that Mythic requires then you will find this incredibly easy to use by comparison. These rules though should feel like you are playing Zwei even when using the GME.

An invaluable tool, 5/5.

Could use a little fine tuning for the system and some small wording fixes, but as it is it works great!

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
