Welcome to a world of strong and powerful warriors, mysterious and clever sorcerers, cruel and decadent rulers, and unnamed horrors in the ruins of ancient civilizations. Prepare your weapons and be ready to explore a fantastic Bronze Age world full of adventure.

Ancient Worlds: Atisi is a campaign setting for Dungeon World. Do you dare to investigate the pyramids of Atisi, cross the woods of Kidhai, and journey through the plains of Javala? Journey onward, as glory awaits the bold!

What will you find in this 280-page book? Let’s see…

  • Major rules changes for Dungeon World, including tweaks to the basic moves, bonds, playbooks (classes), and magic. After all, a Bronze Age setting inspired by Egyptian Mythology is different from standard DW. The land you hail from shapes you, and when you deal with the corrupting power of magic you are subject to taints that will mark your mind and body.
  • Information about the setting, including descriptions of locations and questions about them. Major points of interest, like pyramids, monuments and cities include the right amount of detail to inspire GMs without restricting the group's input in customizing the world.
  • Monsters and creatures, including their stats, moves, instincts and descriptions. Are you ready to face the dreadful m'siseks or confront cultists blessed by dark powers?
  • Common equipment and tools. A bronze weapon is different from one made of steel, but both are lethal: when you are on the battlefield, you don't ask your opponent what material her kopesh is made of.
  • Five compendium classes the heroes can follow. Will you become a jade acolyte or will you bow your head to the lower powers and accept your fate as a dark servant?
  • Mystical artifacts and magical items the heroes can discover. Some of these aren't what they seem... Everything has a price; even when you receive a boon, sooner or later you'll discover banes attached to it. Some may change you, others may tempt you.
  • Game Master (GM) tips and rules needed to run a game. Do you have what it takes to make this world your own?

Reviews and endorsements:

"Ancient Worlds is a unique, refreshing take on Dungeon World, and as a setting, you won’t find anything like this anywhere else. I’d bring this book to my table, even if I wasn’t running the supplement; the tables, magic items, monsters and story hooks are just that good!" -- Yochai Gal

"Ancient Worlds: Atisi is a wonderfully original concept. While it draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Nubian culture, it is not a cheap copy. You won’t find references to Nefertiti or the Nile within its pages, but rather a world all Paschoalin’s own. Not only is the content original, it doesn’t lean on tired stereotypes of Ancient Egypt either; in other words, it is not Cecil B. DeMille or Elizabeth Taylor’s Egypt, but rather an attempt to really capture the true culture of the region at that time." -- L. Frazier, Valkyries - Black Women RPG Group admin

"Ancient Worlds: Atisi is an ancient Egyptian style fantasy world and its reimagining by Marcelo appears rock solid. (...) All in all I think this is a very good game setting. What I have seen is an Advance Review Copy and not the finished work but it looks extremely good." -- Peter R., on Stargazer's World

"Atisi is a game written on a big scale. You won't find moves granting a paltry +1 to Hack & Slash here, and the classes are all tailored to support the low magic, high danger feel. These are big heroes, who will write their destinies large across the world.
There's a very definite traditional vibe, with elegant moves for dual-wielding and spending treasure, weapon degrading tags, and my favorite old tool, the bag of marbles. There's also a hexmap with plenty of keyed locations, most with their own location Move and questions, that evoke the setting very well. The monsters are flavorful and interesting, whether you need something for your PCs to hack through or negotiate with.
Atisi does a great job of evoking the feel of a dream-like Ancient Egypt, with interesting places to explore and plenty of sword and sorcery threats (cultists! serpent demons!) and exotic artifacts to keep a table engaged for the long haul." -- Tam H.

I am very confused - is Atisi the whole country (all of the map) or just the Western part of it? Also have you got a version of the map with the regions (kunla, kidhai, javala etc) marked out - that would help greatly. Thank you.

I am very impressed with the work here and I am wanting to run a game using the system but I need to be able to share the information about the homelands and deities with my players without sharing the whole book. Is it possible for the chapter to be separated out or can you please share with me a version that I can edit as needed. It would make things a great deal easier as my players are all living quite a way from me. Thank you.

I'll work on separate PDF with that info and include it on the download page. It may take me a couple days, though.

It occurs to me that I could scan the pages that I have physically printed out - won't be quite as clear perhaps but it might just about do the job for now until you can come up with a proper one.

Are there plans for a POD version? And is there an available playbooks' preview somewhere? Thank you :)

PoD on its way. I've purchased the proof copies and the ETA is 2-6 weeks.
About the playbooks, I haven't thought about a preview, but I can remedy that in a few days.

I'm in the same boat as Yochai G! Drivethru makes it weirdly hard to leave reviews!

Ancient Worlds: Atisi is a super cool setting for your Dungeon World games!

At 282 pages, you're getting a lot for your money. The book is full of art that helps to set the tone and the layout and colors capture an ancient world feel. Here's what you get:

New Cultures:

You can build your characters from a multitude of intriguing peoples, each with their own outlooks, traditions and styles. The setting is reminiscent of ancient Egypt and surrounding areas so you will break free of the standard Euro-centric fantasy world.

New Classes:

You can select from a number of classes that might seem familiar but are carefully restructured to reflect a Sword and Sorcery vision. Warriors and Beast Masters are not Fighters and Rangers. The biggest shift is the Sorcerer. Don't expect to sling magic without consequences!

New World to Explore:

Since I can't leave a review (again), I'll drop it here. I received a review copy, btw.

As a GM, I love getting inspiration from sources like zines or supplements. However, I sometimes feel a bit envious at the sheer amount of content available for other systems. However, they are often written in such a way that converting an adventure module or setting is sometimes not worth the trouble. Fortunately, Ancient Worlds scratches that itch - and then some.

I can't say enough good things about this supplement. It's more than just a setting for Dungeon World, it's a full-blown remix! It’s jam-packed with new playbooks, moves, magic items, story hooks, and enough unique setting material to last you a lifetime.

The setting itself is chock-full of gameable tools, tables and inspiration. You’ll find a Atisi feels both lived-in and yet somehow familiar at the same time. Yes, it feels a bit like ancient Egypt, or the lost city of Atlantis. But remember, this is Sword & Sorcery,...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
