Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells

The universe is in collapse, as planets and systems struggle for freedom under the rule of sinister despots. Against the malevolent sorcery of the Overlords stand the few remaining bearers of the legendary Solar Blades.

What will you do when the forces of the Void close in?

Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells is a rules light, Star & Sorcery Role Playing Game with an Old School spirit. This is a complete Role Playing Game, inspired by the Old School Renaissance, the Pulp Literature and the many Science Fantasy stories brought to us by movies, comics and games. Based on the Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells RPG, this game system provides players and Overlords (that's how we call the GM in this game) a set of flexible and streamlined rules, as well as an array of tools to make gameplay fast and fun, allowing them to have exciting adventures with solar blades and cosmic spells!

What is in the book?

Although the book has more than 450 pages, it’s filled with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, tables to generate all sorts of game elementos (from items, NPCs, monsters to an entire galaxy). The rules themselves occupy less than 150 pages (including examples and lots of other helpful things). The game also comes with a ready to play adventure, full os possible endings and with great hooks for future game play!

So grab a few dice, call your friends and get ready for a life of adventure with Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells!

You can. I will ask to have that edited out. It was from when we fixed some typos on the first version.

I would love to buy / run this on roll20. It looks incredible, and I have been working on a setting to run for it. One observation I have is that while incredible, small market games like this have very little chance of people already owning the book on Roll20. With bigger market games like 5e, you can just create a game, and take advantage of the vast amount of people who already own the book. Asking people to buy the book seems to be a barrier, and I don't necessarily want to buy 4-5 copies to distribute to people who may or may not even show up for the game from week to week. I know you need to earn money, and would like for more people to just buy the book, but it seems like if there were some sort of "DM solution" for the situation (not necessarily a problem) above, where we could pay a little more and have rules available. I know there is a "draft text" pdf version on the web, but I'm not sure if that's supposed to be available, or if it's just an oversight. This is not a complaint...See more

The draft text is available for free on purpose. I don't really know what else could I do to make it even more acessible. I know it ain't a cheap book, but it is full of content. I could be possible to make a shorter players' guide, with only the players' information on it, but being only one person working on it is a bit harder :(

William B July 21, 2019 4:35 pm UTC
Thanks Diogo, that is a perfect solution, and I was not suggesting you didn't make it accessible. I just didn't know if it was cool with you if I distributed the draft text to players for free. :) Sometimes "free" versions of things float around the internet that aren't supposed to be free. Again, please don't take anything I said as a critisism, you did a great job, and accomplished by yourself what teams of people have failed at in my opinion. My only suggestion would be to split some of the content off into an official free "players handbook". That way it's clear that it's intended to be free, and I don't need to explain to people that you have blessed the "draft text" version for distribution by DM's. I will purchase a copy for myself, and the price is fair in my opinion. Again, great job, and I was not trying to be critical, I just wanted to make sure it was OK to distribute the draft text, and if not, see if you had any ideas past asking players to purchase a book. ...See more

I will also let people know to purchase a copy here if they intend to run the game themselves.

I'm finding typos and grammatical errors on almost every page. I think this product needs a couple more edit passes. As an exercise, I randomly turned to 15 pages. I found one or more errors on each page. The game is fun and extremely creative and the layout and artwork are really good. But more editing is needed. Much more.

One more issue I found is the text on the spine of the book is upside down compared to all of the other books I own. That should be an easy fix.

It actually went through 3 edit passes. I think an updated file should be incoming, but I haven't seen many reports of errors as you said. But thanks for the information.

About the spine, it's actually oriented as it is here in my country (which is based on how the french books use their spine text). I will adjust that in future books.

Hi there—

I realize the answer to this question is probably going to be “whatever you want”, but just in case...

The default setting encompasses at least multiple galaxies, maybe huge numbers of them. So as you imagine it, about how big are hexes and sectors, compared to your average galaxy? Is each sector its own galaxy, say? Each hex, even? Or do multiple (or even innumerable) sectors fit in a single galaxy?

Thanks.

I would say each 3 to 4 sectors would emcompass a single medium galaxies, but some could be bigger and smaller I guess, especially near the core.

Hi Diogo,

I folowed the indigogo back when it was up, but ultimately decided I had enough rpgs already. Today, I finally caved and bought the book. Man, this is so great! I also backed DS&DS : I'm not missing out, this time!

I was wondering if the promised Reference Booklet was available to non-backers. I'd very much like to grab it.

Thanks!

The Reference Booklet is still in the making with Andre's Adventure. Should come out in a couple of months! I am basically stripping down the book and having to redo layout and stuff. But it will be available to anyone!

Oh, and thanks for supporting DS&DS! I really appreciate it!

Okay DTRPG won't let me review on here because I signed up to publish my games on here later, so I'm going to tell folks my review/ramble on HOW FREAKING AWESOME THIS GAME IS can be read over at my website:

http://chaosgrenade.com/2019/03/05/rambling-on-solar-blades-cosmic-spells/

I love Diogo's work and I think he's one of the better voices in the "old-school", DIY and Indie Press scenes. His games are a healthy dose of old-school philosophy, new school sensibilities, and providing enough for any GM who's crunched on time to be able to whip up adventures and NPCs on the fly.

hello Diogo, i have a question, which rpg source would you recommand to adapt more races to SB&CS ?

i really like how this book as a flair of Métal Hurlant (it s the french title for Heavy Metal) and Valérian Agent Spatio-temporel (later known as Valerian & Laureline), and i would love to run a campaign inspired by those titles with a pinch of Lexx tv show.

I am not sure. Most of my players just invent the races they want to play on the fly and we discuss their powers and hindrances to make it somewhat equivalent to being human. Usually one simple power lowers its Luck score to 3, or they chose a hindrance (Negative Die to something). Each additional power can either give an additional hindrance or cost them 1 more adventure/objetive to level up. Strange Stars have some cool species. Star Wars has many?

Hello Diogo, got an other silly question, for the Nimble archetype, i saw there is a "That’s an Easy Target" ability for the nimble archetype, if one of my player wants to play more like a thief/assassin and get really close to know an ennemy, can they swap it with the "Sneak Attack" ability from SS&SS the Specialist archetype ? and of course not using the two abilities unless they purchase it with advencement.

and so far, i really enjoy SB&CS.

I'm not able to leave a review, so will comment here that this game is a ton of fun! I very much enjoyed Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells, so was delighted to see this suddenly appear (I haven't been keeping up). The same smooth engine, honed for cosmic opera, vehicles, spaceships and chases, packed with flavoursome ideas to get you into play.

I was so enamoured that I'll be getting the game to the convention table at North Star in May and might offer something online before then.

Bravo!

Stylistically. Is this setting more Buck Rogers/Flash-Gordon, Dune, or John Carter of Mars/World of Synnibar?

The simplest way I could codify my intentions with the setting would be to say it’s Dark Sun in Soace. It’s post-apocalyptic, dangerous, magic and psionics corrupt mortals, there are tyrants every sector. But it’s a setting with a toolkit. It gives you the main themes a lots of tables to generate your universe in accordance to the main themes of it.

I purchased the soft cover/pdf combo. I must say that I'm loving it so far. I like the aesthetic very much. It kind of allows you to go over the top with your ideas, where its generic enough to do so, but has enough meat in it to make it mean something. Can't wait to get the hard copy to dive in deeper, because I'm old school like that. Or just old. Also, the character and vehicle sheets are AWESOME!!! Good job fellas! I highly recommend this for your cosmic adventuring needs.

I think the preview is temporarily #$%*@ as a result of the very recent server work/migration pf the DTRPG website. I've had trouble viewing many other PDF previews on the site since the site went back up a day or two ago.

You really need more substantial previews with a selection from your 456 pages. Also it helps in the text to show the unique features of the rules, to distinguish yourself from Stars Without Number or Starfinder.

Diogo N February 01, 2019 2:00 pm UTC

We will look into that. The setting is a post-apocalyptic future with kind of Sorcerer-Kings ruling sectors and a few independent and chaotic regions. Technology is rare and in control of those in power. There is magic and psionic power, but they are really taxing to use and not very reliable, although they can be powerful.

System wise it's a very streamlined system with the main mechanic being rolling a d20 equal to or below than your Attribute but above the Difficulty. There are 4 Archetypes that can be infinitely customizable by the character concept (which functions similarly to Fate aspects), a Luck mechanic, character complications, non-vancian magic; and a lot of tools and tables to generate things like monster, events, adventures, titles, planets, sectors, artifacts...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
