Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells

The universe is in collapse, as planets and systems struggle for freedom under the rule of sinister despots. Against the malevolent sorcery of the Overlords stand the few remaining bearers of the legendary Solar Blades.

What will you do when the forces of the Void close in?

Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells is a rules light, Star & Sorcery Role Playing Game with an Old School spirit. This is a complete Role Playing Game, inspired by the Old School Renaissance, the Pulp Literature and the many Science Fantasy stories brought to us by movies, comics and games. Based on the Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells RPG, this game system provides players and Overlords (that's how we call the GM in this game) a set of flexible and streamlined rules, as well as an array of tools to make gameplay fast and fun, allowing them to have exciting adventures with solar blades and cosmic spells!

What is in the book?

Although the book has more than 450 pages, it’s filled with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, tables to generate all sorts of game elementos (from items, NPCs, monsters to an entire galaxy). The rules themselves occupy less than 150 pages (including examples and lots of other helpful things). The game also comes with a ready to play adventure, full os possible endings and with great hooks for future game play!

So grab a few dice, call your friends and get ready for a life of adventure with Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells!

Is this compatible with Sharp Swords and Sinister Spells?

not entirely, but some rules and approaches are similar. It's a much bigger book though with loads of extra ideas, optional rules and a fun setting in sci fi space :)

Could someone clarify a rule for me please?

The Tough has a special ability "I can take them All". Which says "The character can make a number of attacks per round, equal to the difference between their level and the highest number of HD of an opponent in close range."

If I read that correctly:
-a Lvl 1 fighter vs any number of 1HD opponents in close range cannot make extra attacks. (there is no difference).
- A Lvl 5 fighter fighting say 3 1HD opponents in close range can make 4 attacks against them - the number doesn't matter only the highest number of HD) .
However, as written it implies:
- A Level 1 fighter vs a 5HD opponent, can make 4 attacks against the superior enemy. (still a 4HD difference)
Is it correct this ability only works one way, i.e against lower HD enemies?

Probably works one way. Doesn't make sense to get more attacks the stronger an opponent is.

Yes, there’s a location and alien generator. The GM screen has even more tools for that.

I love the random tables, sheer creativity and "Heavy Metal Masters of the Universe" feel of this game. I will say that we did eventually go back to using the basic three classes, hit points, armor system, and luck role from SS&SS because we just liked those more in actual play, but fortunately it was not hard to port them over.

Is there any chance of getting the better (in my opinion) alternative cover available on Drivethru' again? The price on Lulu is too much.

I'm curious about the shift from Usage Die being used for luck in SS&SS vs. the roll under d6 system here, and the choice to have the "Blood" system from the addendum to SS&SS be the default HP method here. On the surface, it appears to be an attempt at allowing the game to be played with nothing but a d20, and a few d6, but it looks to me like it shifts the math of the system quite heavily against the players. Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong, I haven't fully crunched the probabilities, but a life time of nerddom is telling me that it's easier to die in this system, and that your Luck runs out quicker.

Can anyone offer some insight into this? (Haven't gotten to play it yet.)

I'm a math nerd. Can you post / paraphrase the rule in SS&SS and the rule in SB&CS and I'll crunch the crunch for ya♥

I'm not a math nerd at all, but after trying the game out a few times as written, I've decided that I greatly prefer the original rules from SS&SS a LOT more (three classes, HP, luck die by class, the simpler class abilities, the way armor works, non-abstract wealth, etc.) I never really thought about it in terms of starting level competency or probabilities, I mostly just like having the full variety of polyhedrals. I dunno, the original system just felt a lot more fun in actual play to me. I absolutely love all the setting information, charts, tables, and powers list from from Solar Blades though, and fortunately it wasn't that hard to port the old system mechanics back in. I have a feeling the 2nd edition of SS&SS will probably use the newer version from Solar Blades and Dark Streets... In which case I hope they at least add an appendix for using the original system and antagonist chart instead.

I just received my hardcover copy of the book and have noticed an odd, and somewhat disappointing phenomena compared to the pdf. This is not a comment on the quality of the game, which I adore as I do all of Diogo's games, but it is about the printing. Simply, in the book many many images have a crude outline where they meet the text, like an amateur used MS Paint to crop them out and past them to the page. These lines are not present in any of the images on the PDF, but occur quite often in the physical book. An explanation for this is all I ask at this time, because I find it odd. This hasn't happened on other hardcover or softcover printings I've ordered from DrivethruRPG.

The publication date for the variant cover (dust cover format) is Feb 1, 2019 (as of this writing). I see that the file for this version was last updated on May 2019. Is the text of the lulu version up to date with this one?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
