Ballers II

Bloodblitz, also known as Bloodblitz Football or simply Blitzball, once a rough peasant sport of unknown origins, today is still a brutal, but complex game, that has seen a vast spread in popularity in only a few decades. Bloodblitz is played by two lineups of eleven players, also known as Blitzballers or simply Ballers, who compete to place an inflated pig’s stomach past a post to score points. Save from a universal ‘no-weapons allowed’ rule, Blitzballers otherwise have free reign to undertake any physical action against members of the opposing team in order to enhance their own team’s chance to score points or decrease the opposing team’s chance to do this instead. While in the past only a few well-to-do merchants occasionally found themselves sponsoring Bloodblitz, forming teams to settle perceived as well as material scores between rivals, a whole new branch of economy evolved around the sport of Bloodblitz.

Thesaurus recens historiae

This is the second installment of Ballers. In the first installment we barely scratched on the surface of FGF themed Campaign Setting Layer. With optional character creation and Professions being the focus, we defined where people, who are involved in Bloodblitz, may come from, and what was their role off the field in a grim & perilous world. In this installment we take a deeper dive and provide you virtually anything required to emulate the on pitch action of the sport of Bloodblitz.

The section Bloodblitz on Pitch gives you some general ideas, how to play Bloodblitz. It specifies an adapted and expanded set of Skill and Combat rules. Consider which of the mechanics suits your Setting and your style of play best.

The section Rules of Bloodblitz provides you answers to the question, what is the game of Bloodblitz? Alongside a set of out-of-the-box meta-rules we present several alternatives for almost any aspect of the game. The frame conditions of your Setting may influence your choice of the meta-rules more radically than your choice of the mechanics. It could be possible that a couple of regional or cultural variation coexist in your Setting, similar to the real world.

A couple of new Professions and some Bloodblitz related Trappings are provided in their respective sections.

Ballers is not meant to be a whole grim & perilous setting for ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG. Instead, it is intended to provide specifically designed rules’ set and content in order to implement a Fantasy Gridiron Football (FGF) themed campaign setting.

We have decided to update Ballers as a whole rather than release it in sections. Thus the first installment is still available as a version of this product.

Does the FGF portion require a GM? Does it play like a boardgame?

First and foremost I have to clarify that Ballers is a supplement for the Zweihänder RPG and not a board game per se.

If you just want to play a game of FGF using Zweihänder and Ballers without a GM, I can say, yes you can. We have provided most of the Difficulty Rating for Actions like picking up or throwing the Ball and blocking and tackling a Player. However keep in mind that this is a RPG and thus offers far more options towards a player’s individual actions than your typical Table Top Miniature Wargaming System or a board game. With more options involved the decision making process takes longer. Consequently the amount of time required for a complete match of FGF in Ballers is larger.

Like with most modern RPGs it depends on your game style if it plays like a board game. We support a broad width of playing styles from Theater of the Mind through schematic graphic to Board Game like Table Top style.
We tackle our examples with a battle map and without. The battle map...See more

I have to answer this question with a definitive, no it isn’t.

First, BloodBowl is a board game, which Ballers is not. Second, “BloodBowl” is a brand to which GamesWorkshop holds the copyright and I do not intent to challenge in any given way.

Ballers, is a community content supplement to ZWEIHÄNDER RPG and fleshes out the Blitzballer profession, that was featured in the fanzine SLLSWRD and will be introduced in the supplement MAIN GAUCHE. It provides a specifically designed rules’ set and content in order to implement the general concept of Fantasy Gridiron Football (FGF) into any ZWEIHÄNDER RPG compatible Setting, and thus providing a themed Campaign Setting Layer.

With optional character creation and Professions being the focus, we define where people, who are involved in Blitzball, may come from, and what was their role off the field in a grim & perilous world.

In the upcoming installment, we’ll take a deeper dive into this Campaign Setting...See more

Do you have a time frame for when that upcoming installment will be released?

Since I’m a spare time developer, I do not have a time frame per se for that upcoming installment.

However I can tell, that about 75% of the draft is done so far. This includes all of the on-pitch-rules, which are in the first phase of playtesting by now.
The in-world rules of play are under development.
Total page count will be definitely higher than in the first installment.

We want to deliver the best product, we are able to create. Thus we’d rather take some time for maturation, than release an only partially developed installment.

For further discussion on any details, feel free to reach out for me at the Zweihänder Discord in the section Ballers-Discussion.

Ballers II is coming!

Regarding the progress I can say, we are at the last yards or in the red zone!!!

Regarding the content, here is a short summary:

The section Bloodblitz on Pitch gives you some general ideas, how to play Bloodblitz. It specifies an adapted and expanded set of Skill and Combat rules. Consider which of the mechanics suits your Setting and your style of play best.

The section Rules of Bloodblitz provides you answers to the question, what is the game of Bloodblitz? Alongside a set of out-of-the-box meta-rules we present several alternatives for almost any aspect of the game.

A couple of new Professions and some Bloodblitz related Trappings are provided in their respective sections.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
