The Blackest of Deaths - Dire Old School Fantasy RPG

"The Blackest of Deaths is what it says on the tin. Your character is dropped into a brutal, unforgiving world that is actively opposed to your survival. You're prey that doesn't know it's place yet. There's no character advancement, no way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. There is you, a handful of meager items, a few minimal abilities, and the finality of defeat.

Now, that sounds like a real downer to most. Why would anyone want to play that? Isn't the point of a roleplaying game to experience some kind of power fantasy and character agency? Well, the answer to all of these questions is yes -- and that's the beauty of Blackest. Surviving to fight another day in this game feels like a genuine accomplishment. Your character will struggle like never before. Your character will fail. Your character will die.

But not every time. And on those rare occasions when you do manage to leap from the gaping, inexorable jaws of oblivion, you'll walk away with a great story to tell your fellow gamers and a gaming experience worth remembering. You will live. You will cheat death. You will survive.

This time..."

Yes everything is. There is some rules tweaks and such but if you get the Deluxe you won't be missing anything.

First off, I really like this game and I am looking forward to the Deluxe version and all the kickstarter rewards. In the interest of the game being just a little better/clearer, could we please get some variables for spells? From the ENTIRE list of possible spells, so many are missing range/duration and a few are missing Area of Effect. Sure I can fill in the blanks from various white box spell lists, but it would be very nice to have them included in the ruleset

With all due respect to Bloat games, it needs to be said that the system here is not specifically OSR. To be clear, this is a homebrew system that is not actually compatible with the OSR systems listed in the tags.

Thanks for reaching Gorgar. I have spoke with DTRPG and asked them to refund your purchase because you were unhappy with our product. However, and I'm not trying to be nasty here I promise, but this is definitely an OSR product and about 40% of the text comes from A Hero's Journey which is firmly White Box. Again, not trying to be nasty or a jerk, just letting others know what it is that they are getting.

Have a great day and hopefully we'll get you back onboard for our next product. :)

"definitely an OSR product"
Dude, anyone reading the preview who cares about OSR would beg to differ. Rolls against DC? Advantage/Disadvantage? Luck Points? What 40% of White Box are you talking about?
But I get it. This site has no oversight on what is and isn't "other OSR." No one can blame you for taking advantage of that, because few people are interested in yet another homebrew. Fine. I'm just glad you aren't confusing and misleading people anymore and have removed the Labyrinth Lord, S&W, Classic D&D tags.

So some notices;
Deck of Many Things: On Ace of Clubs it mentions the Quest spell, this spell is not listed anywhere else in the book.
Scroll of Invisible Stalker: It gives the monster 30hp but there are no other stats for it in order for anyone to fight it.
Feeble Mind Spell: This reduces someone INT to 3 on failure. This is still a very good INT score considering at most it could be 5 during generation (race and class bonus) and possibly boosted beyond on items and other events. Shouldn't this reduce INT by 3 instead?

I noticed something in regards to the Death Knight on pg 52. The description details that they wield a two-handed sword but then their combat stats detail a [Magic] Mace 1d6+2.

Also are more classes expected in the future? I really like this ruleset and having a little more variety could be great, especially having some sort of a Knight class. I thought the Monster Slayer would be a good replacement, but their arbitrary blunt weapon restriction seemed odd (I know they are a Cleric expy).

The deluxe version will have 6 more classes added in. Unsure if its kickstarter exclusive or not.

There will be a deluxe version released later that has 6 more classes, more rules, updates and all the stretch goals from the Kickstarter. The Death Knight should be Mace, not sword. I'll get that updated soon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
