Forbidden Lands Core Game

$24.99

Round the beggar from Varassa all sat in a ring,

and by the campfire they sat and heard his song.

And about walkers and wolfkin and every terrible thing,

and of his fear he sang to them all night long:

“There is something beyond the mountains, beyond the howls beyond the mist, there is something behind the veils, behind hearts cold as stone.

Hearken, something walks and whispers, walks and lures you in and whimpers:

Come to us, for this earth shall ever be ours and ours alone!”

Forbidden Lands is a new take on classic fantasy roleplaying. In this open-world survival roleplaying game, you’re not heroes sent on missions dictated by others - instead, you are raiders and rogues bent on making your own mark on a cursed world. You will discover lost tombs, fight terrible monsters, wander the wild lands and, if you live long enough, build your own stronghold to defend. Contents:

  • Player’s Manual including rules for fast character generation, visceral combat, lethal magic, dangerous journeys and for building your own stronghold - easily be ported to your own favorite game world.
  • Gamemaster’s Guide including a rich and detailed description of the Forbidden Lands setting, a large illustrated Bestiary, extensive random encounters, and three complete adventure sites.
  • The Legends & Adventurers booklet, letting you flesh out your characters and give them unique backgrounds.
  • Full-color map, giving you the freedom to explore the Forbidden Lands any way you want, hex by hex.

From the creators of the award-winning RPGs Tales from the Loop, Coriolis - The Third Horizon and Mutant: Year Zero.

"It's like somone took hazy childhood memories of a classic D&D game and mixed them with a dash of bleak Scandinavian darkness."
–Tabletop Magazine

"Superbly packaged, Forbidden Lands is a pleasing combination of Old School nostalgia and fast, simple mechanics with unobtrusive narrative elements designed to bring aspects of the character into play. Its setting offers scope for the player characters to develop not just personally, but also in terms of their place in the world."

This might just be the greatest RPG of all-time. That's saying a lot from me, as I'm a huge fan of dozens of RPG's and have been GMing a diverse array of systems and settings since the 90's. Forbidden Lands is just that damn good. It pays tribute to traditional, old-school fantasy RPG’s and breaks new ground with stunning innovations and simplifications at the same time. It will sweep the Ennies and Golden Geek - MARK MY WORDS!

The production and value of the Core Boxed Set is unmatched in RPG history. For $45, you get two pho-leather, hardcover, gilded rule books with attached ribbons for bookmarking your pages: The Player's Handbook and the Gamemaster's Guide. You also get a third softcover book, a gigantic color hex-map of the Forbidden Lands, and a sticker set to place on the map as your players explore. And this is all contained in the boxed set, which is nice and sturdy with beautiful art on the cover.

The game uses the award-winning and simple "Year Zero" engine from...See more

By any chance is there a GM screen for this? If not, are there any player made resources or quick references out there?

Crap. I found out about this game 2 weeks ago. I wanted the physical box set but where I live (Canada) its out of stock everywhere. I should have bough the pdf when it was on sale! I feel it's a bit costly considering I'll be buying the box set for not even 20$ difference as soon as it's back in stock (if ever, let's hope it will!)

You mean there are towers, villages etc market on the map? There are on every version, but whether that tower etc is an Adventure site or not, and which one, is entirely up to you.

Are the various books a separate PDF, or is it all lumped together into one giant pdf?

Also, as someone that has a physical copy, is there a way to get a discount or such with proof of ownership?

Would this game be good for a Lord of the Rings game?

(I know of the One Ring but this looks like a good competitor for games set in Arda.)

It would work about as well as any OSR game. Not that this is an OSR game, but that is what it's trying to emulate and it hits that style fairly well.

I know I'm asking a lot but I want to make sure about something's before I buy it. I see in stores this game is not coming out until next year. If I order it from the publisher will I get it soon. Or will it be next year? The box game looks amazing and really want it. Any answers will help.

If you order a physical copy, they are available now. The distributor has a backlog problem right now though, so it may take a couple of weeks to dispatch.

If we order direct from Free League, what is the expected delivery time to the US? Also, how do you distribute the PDF codes...via DTRPG

Thanks in advance.

Im interested but i need a real preview, not a map. Give me a character sample, stats, a game play example. (Black Dougal ...) I need a lot more before i hand over $25 for just a pdf.

I got the notification of the release today and it sounds pretty good to me. I did wonder though, the notification said, "Forbidden Lands is a legacy game, in which your actions will permanently change the game map, turning it into a living chronicle of your adventures." and I am really curious about how this mechanic works?

I mean, all of the RPG campaigns I've run, this is pretty much what happens anyway, but I was wondering if there is something special about the map that you can "change the game map" as players do stuff? Or are you supposed to just draw new stuff or scribble out existing stuff on the original map?

The box comes with not just a double sided map, but also transparent backed stickers, so that you can place the adventure sites wherever your party discovers them. The PDF of course does not include the stickers. :)

Ah, good. Thanks for answering that, I was really curious. Do the stickers remove easily if you want to reuse the map for a new campaign or will there be issues?

I have not tried, but I wouldn’t remove the stickers. I think Free League planned to sell extra map/sticker packs

The map is double sided, and the box set comes with a set of stickers. They are not transparent however, and most definitely not removable. Unfortunately, the art on the stickers is very dark and I think they are hard to see on the map, I hope Fria Ligan will release a better set of stickers in the future. That said, the box set and books are very beautiful and well worth the price.

This is a new take? It, well, sounds like a very OLD take on fantasy roleplaying. Dating all the way back to Gygax's table and the LBB.

Yes. It's a new take (modern mechanics with a survival focus) on classic fantasy (discovering dungeons, fighting monsters, etc.). It's a well designed game with a clear theme.

The game mixes a very old school fantasy setting with dice pool mechanics, survival/travel mechanisms, stronghold building, hex crawling etc. Lots of different things going on, and the setting is quite dark and deadly. After a read through, the DNA of the game seems to be drawn from a mix of Burning Wheel, The One Ring, Black Hack and a dash of Classic D&D and DCC (most apparent in the art and magic system).

A fantasy heartbreaker is an "improved" D&D written in ignorance of anything besides D&D (or potentially some other fantasy property, I guess). Say what you like if you don't like the world or themes, but the mechanical system is clearly modern & aware of design philosophy & trends of the day.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
