Legend of the Five Rings: Beginner Game

Watermarked PDF

NOTE: This PDF package is not a standalone product. The physical edition contains punchboard components and custom dice. A PDF of the punchboard is included in this package, but dice must be purchased seperately to play the game.

In Rokugan, it is said that honor is stronger than steel. While even the finest blade can bend and break under the heat of the forge, the Emerald Empire’s society has been folded in the forges of politics and war for more than a thousand years, and it has not yet broken. The society of Rokugan follows a divinely ordered pattern set down by the eight Kami, who shared their celestial blessings with the mortal realm. Rokugan is a land of strict social stratification, where an improper look at the wrong time can mean death.

This is an era of sudden change and upheaval, however. Mortal schemes, natural calamities, and celestial turmoil alike have disrupted the political, military, and spiritual equilibrium of the land. Long-simmering rivalries and fresh betrayals ripple through the courts and on the battlefield. The Chrysanthemum Throne is beset by threats from without and within, and the honor of the seven Great Clans—the families descended from the heroes of legend and sworn to rule their lands in the Emperor's name—shall be put to the test.

This is the stage of The Legend of the Five Rings Beginner Game, a new roleplaying experience in the land of honor and steel.

The Legend of the Five Rings Beginner Game allows anyone to take on the role of a Samurai in Rokugan With a full range of four character folios, a fully realized adventure book, a map of Rokugan, a variety of tokens and a complete set of rules, The Legend of the Five Rings Beginner Game gives newbies and veterans alike the perfect door to the Emerald Empire.

Could I use this as a Jump Start one shot for Lo5R?

Yo, i see you havn't gotten a response so maybe my opinion will be of assitance :)
I think it's a Decent one shot, but a better starting point or introduction. It gradually introduces rules and scenarios so there are a lot of dice rolling just to get used to the system. It takes place in and around a Topaz Champiopnship tournament, and so is very easy to build upon too.

The Game Masters kit has a good One Shot scenario that takes place in a shady port town, that is very intresting and is easy for a game master to tweak to fit the players :)

Are the tokens usable for VTTs like Shard, Roll20, or Foundry?

From the description you would have to use another program to convert them into tokens as it says the punchboard is a pdf but maybe someone who has purchased this can confirm whether they actually separated them into vtt usable files.

Are the tokens included in a way that's usable for VTTs?

I'm going to be honest - this product should be about $6-$7 cheaper. Why? Because the print price is $40, and the dice set that it comes with is $13. This version DOES NOT include the dice, obviously, so basing the digital price on the full retail value of the print box is absurd. (And I say this as someone who already owns the print version.)

I can agree with this but they will now argue that you can get the digital dice roller for free...

The character folios for Isawa Aki (Folio_Phoenix.pdf) and Togashi Yoshi (Folio_Dragon.pdf) fail to download for me (these are the primary reason for me purchasing the digital version of this; I have the physical edition, but it would be nice to have copies of the character folios to be used without sacrificing them after they're written in for future runs).

Additionally, I feel like I should point this out for anybody looking to buy this: Be prepared for a ton of typos and poor editing in the Beginner Box. These are present in the physical version as well; the Beginner Box just seems to be very poorly-edited. The full game, however, seems to be quite well-done (or at least, I've not noticed issues there so far), so please don't let this turn you off from buying into the full game if you enjoy the mechanics and themes introduced in this.

Has the download problem solved? And what about the resolution of the folios and the map? The Core Rulebook pdf map looks like crap.

All of the downloads do seem to be working fine for me now, yes.

The map of Rokugan is -much- clearer than the page on the Core Rulebook PDF (likely because it's intended for a 17x22 page instead of 8.5x11). It's not the greatest thing around, but it's at least clean and readable in comparison.

The maps of Tsuma and the Castle of the Emerald Champion are likewise readable, each intended for a 17x11 page.

Do you know the dimensions of the map? 1333x2000 or what have you.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
