Crypt of the Shadow Lord is written for one, first-level, lawful cleric. With little to no adjustment, the Basic Rules from other, similar Fantasy Role Playing Games may also be employed successfully. Although designed as a solitaire, this adventure also plays well as a duet (one player and one referee), and is intended as something of an introduction for both novice players and game referees.

Not unlike the "choose-your-own-path" books of yesteryear, this adventure has been written so that the storybook (along with some assistance from you) plays the role of referee. The crypt offers numerous ways for a first-level character to meet their doom, however, if the adventure is completed successfully, there is an excellent chance that they will have won enough XP to advance a level.

Is there a map that exists anywhere for this?

Hello Bart! My apologies for the delayed reply, and Thank You! Thank You Again!! for your investment in this debut solo adventure. I really appreciate your feedback here too. When creating the adventure I did indeed scratch out a rough map of the Crypt, and also did consider including some version this map. After some thought, however, I decided not to provide it. My reasoning is that 1. it would diminish too much the challenge/thrill of exploration 2. the PC (1st level cleric) would not really have access to such a map so you shouldn't either, and 3. the Crypt is full of illusions, so a really detailed map would have to be misleading or "give away the game" in a sense. That being said, while exploring the Crypt I think making a map of some sort would be helpful - just make your best estimation when lacking a very detailed description.

Now worries regarding a late reply...mine is just as late. LOL.

Thanks for your explanation. I was just trying to make it a bit easier for myself as I had/have intention of running another player through the adventure, and a previously generated map would have just made my role as a DM/GM a bit easier. Regardless, the overall concept will work just fine. Thanks again for scratching my curiosity itch regarding a map. Cheers!

It would be fun to have other adventures for the other classes- Wizard, Thief, Dwarf, etc.

It's like you're reading my mind. I hope to have the Thief adventure ready by the end of 2019.

If you do, then PLEASE include distances in your descriptions so the player can keep track of progress via a map. Without the distances, or at least pretty damn close approximations, its just a gaggle f**k. The textual descriptions are great for creating atmosphere, but without the ability to keep track of progress via a map, instead having to keep track with a slew of notes related to numbered text entries, it just becomes an exercise in frustration and futility.

Hey there Bart! You make some really great points here. I will certainly put some more thought into the level of detail provided for adventure navigation. The thief adventure is more of an urban adventure than a dungeon crawl, so some sort of area map should be available to the PC (and to the player, of course). Thanks again for giving this product a chance!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
