The Stygian Library is a creepily genteel dungeon set in an infinite extradimensional library. Each expodition generates its route as it explores, resulting in new locations being iscovered with every visit. Included within:

  • Systems for generating locations within the library, including Entrance Foyers, Map Galleries, Tea Rooms,  Planetariums, Calculation Engines, Phantom Databanks, Paper Beehives, Phantom Pumps, Jarred Brains and the Sheol Computer.
  • 40 monsters tailored to the Library, including Lantern Bearers, Skeleton Crew, Origami Golems, Guardian Shades, Lost Souls, Ink Elementals, Animate Spells, Archivist-Liches, Infernal Merchants, Escaped Fictions, Educated Rodents, Conceptual Wells and the orders of Librarians themselves.
  • A system for searching for specific knowledge within the library's depths, as well as 30 unusual books and the secret knowledge they contain.
  • Tables for generating treasure, dreams, rumors, and various other useful details.
  • A unique class of Mummified Sages, post-human accademics who've dwelled in the Library for decades or more.

It's a big spooky library full of dangerous knowledge, spiritual automata and ghost-fueled computers.

This got a Judge's Spotlight Ennie, which is nice.

The remastered version of the book is now sold out at Exalted Funeral and it doesn’t appear there will be another printing. So will a POD version be made available again here ?

You know what this is pretty good. I like the alternative to a tavern to start. Put this in a city and you have a start. IF YOU SEE FLAWS THEN WORK AROUND THEM AND KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Does this product come with complete rules for play, or do you require another rulebook?

Clinton, it is meant to be played with an OSR system like LotFP (Lamentations of the Flame Princess), which is available here for free in an art free version. Look up "Lamentations of the Flame Princess Rules & Magic" to find it.

On the “Types of Books” d100 list, entry 76 (my lucky number) is missing, which is mysterious, cool, and triggers my inner completionist terribly. Please notify the the Librarians of the Yellow Order, immediately.

I love this adventure. It fits perfectly in Vornheim's Zorlac Library or connected to The Maze of the Blue Medusa, which may have inspired it. I like the tie-ins it has with other LoTFP products like Veins of the Earth and Blood in the Chocolate too. There are some spelling, formatting, and other minor errors, but otherwise it is a masterpiece. I would love to see the rest of Emmy's books be in hardcover like this one is.

Wonderful product and amazingly fast client support!
Played twice (5e and d6) and ready to GM it on a old school system.
It is a must to try in terms of improvisational GMing, the source book has the perfect size and an intuitive layout, reduces flipping to the bare minimum, requires barely any preparation and can run endless number of adventures.
I consider it a must to have in a GM arsenal.
It is also a nice case study for home-brewing and eventually sandboxing

Very creative, lots of random tables, and it looks fun to run. However, the procedures are a tad confusing, the vocabulary for those procedures is lacking at times, and there are no bookmarks which is its biggest downfall. Buy it, read it, but don't run as intended.

I see it says "just won an Ennie" so is this the Remastered version or the original?

So creative and fun! I especially love how it centers around one core mechanic, then details each result clearly, which helps me run this is my 5e games with little modification. I'll be running a session with this as soon as I can!

Love the creativity! Brilliant imagination!

Regarding the pdf: no bookmarks is disappointing -- that's one major way a pdf shines over physical book. Even better would be to also have internal links, at least for page# references.

Also it does not show the cover as a thumbnail in windows file explorer. Maybe a glitch on my end, but my Gardens of Ynn pdf does not have this problem, so I think it might be something in the pdf format itself.

Hopefully an updated pdf out soon? I'd even pay a little extra regarding the extra work.

Just ran this for my group minutes ago. I own the physical copy of the book, and it's a beautiful object, but a bookmarked PDF would make running this game a lot easier at the (virtual) table.

The PDF could sure use links within the text, but this is overwise a wonderfully evocative book.

Even if you just cherry-picked monsters or ideas and never ran the Library with the procedure as written you'd more than get your money's worth.

And the copious art by Alex Sorensen nails the tone perfectly.

What level characters would this work best for?

It depends on how well everyone behaves. Even the neurovores (the mind flayer substitutes, who have a really interesting rationale for being there and are charming and cultured) aren't necessarily looking for a fight. The things that are overtly hostile to everyone can mostly be handled by low level characters. The tougher stuff can be bargained or reasoned with.

I had a group of three level one characters go into the library looking for Cardenio, a lost Shakespearean work, and made it out alive, having only had to fight a giant trapdoor spider hiding in one room. They were polite and stayed the heck out of trouble with both the librarians and neurovores.

Gold and silver are both mentioned in the text, so it's gold standard, realistically.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
