Unbound: A Masks Supplement

Supers know that Halcyon City, the greatest city in the world, doesn’t just exist in this dimension. It’s a nexus of the multiverse, where an enterprising dimensional shifter could hop around to all manner of other words, with other problems, other powers—other versions of you.

Here are four such worlds, strange mirrors of our own Halcyon City. They beckon, to show you what is,  and what could be…

Unbound is a sourcebook for the roleplaying game Masks: A New Generation that shows off four new and different ways to play Masks. The base game assumes that you’re young superheroes in Halcyon City, but with these playsets, you can play entirely new stories, still all centered around issues of identity and finding yourself.
In this book, you get:
  • Four new playsets, including the alien-resistance story of Iron Red Soldiers; the gritty street-level crime drama of Spiderweb; the teen antics of Phoenix Academy; and the cosmic roadtrip adventure of Apocalypse Sonata.
  • Three new limited edition playbooks to add to your game of Masks, along with advice for using them in your game.

Does your team of heroes have what it takes to explore the infinite varieties of the multiverse? Time to find out.

Do any of these new playbooks have notes for integrating them with the Joined playbook from Halcyon City?

The Unbound playbooks do not not have notes regarding the Joined, but we will be putting together a blog post with them soon and the general adaptation rules on pg 108-109 of HCHC should help in the meantime.

Sorry for the delay while other projects took priority, but the blog post about integrating the Joined with the newer playbooks is now up on our website!

Will there be a version with bookmarks any time soon? I love the game, but it's disappointing that the new supplement isn't bookmarked yet.

Bookmarks are super easy to do, and doing your own often gives you ones better fit for purpose.

I'm all for people having the option of replacing preset bookmarks with their own. But a PDF of any length really ought to come with bookmarks standard. This is a product category that's mature enough for consumers to reasonably expect that they not have to do part of the work of making purchased PDFs fully usable.

I mean, I'm a reasonably talented artist, and I find color sketches of teen heroes "super easy to do" as well. Does that mean that Magpie shouldn't have included art in any of their Masks books?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
