Black is Back!

New expanded Second Edition rules now include a wealth of extra material and tools for every Black Hack GM. The main rules still only take up 30 pages, but the full edition adds over 90 more pages of NPCs, monsters, dungeons, traps, magic items and much more.

The Black Hack is a super-streamlined roleplaying game that uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game as a base, and could well be the most straightforward modern OSR compatible clone available. If speed of play and character creation, compatibility, and simple - yet elegant rules are what you yearn for. Look no further!

The Black Hack is a fast playing game and the rules can be picked up in minutes.

Print copies of The Black Hack Second Edition including a boxed set are now available and may be ordered from the Squarehex website.

Does anyone know if the PDF is set up for easy printing (on my home printer)?

Is there a way to get an editable document? I purchased the PDF, but I would love to be able to edit it to hack it as my own (without purchasing an expensive PDF editor). Also, the PDF itself seems to be password protected, preventing a PDF editor from doing anything with it, even if I did purchase one. How can I remove this protection?

Well I gave up, just went back to playing AD&D 2E, no pod no sale (your loss not mine).

You can find the print edition on the squarehex website, but sadly it isn't available here.

Why are some sections omitted from the table of contents (and bookmarks)? For example, "Overland Adventures".

I'm playing a campaign of this and we're having issues understanding how magic works.

In the manual, you say that when time is tracked using minutes, a spellcaster can spend an action to cast from a book or a scroll and making a test. If he fails the test, he suffers a random consequence. My cleric interpreted this rule as "outside of combat, I can cast a spell from by prayerbook as many times as I want", and since all the consequences in that table aren't mechanically bad (they are just kinda wacky), he just keeps spamming cure light wounds outside of combat and ignore the consequences because all they do is change his appearance. As a gamemaster, I just realized that I cannot damage my players outside of combat because they will always be instatly healed.

In that instance I'd probably house rule that if reading a spell to cast it then it's only possible once per spell / per session. And/or you could say that only spells that aren't memorised can be read as reading a memorised spell wipes it from the caster's memory.

Thank you for the reply and house rule suggestion. Does this mean that my cleric's interpretation of the ruleset is correct?

found it on squarehex, holy COW! $70.00 to $USA for the box set. You really need a US distributor like Amazon.

In the US you can get Black Hack material from Exalted Funeral, Noble Knight and Games Unlimited.

Sold out, all. They seem to sell out quite quickly when they get stock. I understand that's probably better than having overstock though.

We printed a nice stitched hardback and loads of extra items. PoD is great but it's pretty limited.

Confused about how shields and helms work on characters with lighter or heavier armour. If they just get +1 to the AV doesnt that mean a helm on someone wearing plate is more likely to break than one on someone wearing cloth?

And if a character has no armor but holds a shield, is the shield always fixed on a rest? (Rolling above a 0 on 1D6)

And why an encounter roll after everyone has a turn? We had three 6s in a row and the characters were basically needing a meal after every room. I know that basically a GM’s job is to tweak things they don’t like, but I’m wondering if I’m doing it wrong or not getting the intention behind some of these rules.

No, they add one armor die. Your armor value remains the same.

Just picked this up, loving what I'm seeing and ideas are already flowing for games.

Quick question, that I couldn't find the answer to. The book mentions Dungeon Level a few times, but never calls out what it is, or tips on generation. My guess is that the Dungeon Level is treated just like HD? Is there any relationship between the HD of monsters and the dungeon level? Or is the dungeon level just for calculating random monsters and trap HD?

saw the questing beast review view and thought this product looked awesome, so I'm just going to give you my money now.

I will say drivethrurpg needs to sort its search function out; I searched for this product and got everything that wasn't this product. I went to google and searched for it and the drivethrurpg page was the first return ffs.

Hey, just wondering if you've considered offering the 'nipple-less wizard' edition I'd asked about awhile back. It seems like others would like that too. It's not clear that the character isn't wearing a top so really just erasing the nipples is all that's required.

Again, sorry to ask, it's ridiculous, I know, but there are a lot of places (workplace, schools...as described) where--but for those two pesky nips--your product could be used.

Love the system...for anyone considering buying the game, it is well worth it!

I want to make sure I'm reading the rules correctly. Since players make attribute tests to attack and defend, does that mean that each monster/NPC is just as easy/difficult to hit (and to avoid being hit by) as any other? Are the hit points and damage dice the only mitigating factor here? It just seems odd that a dragoneffectively has the same armor class as a goblin.

Hi Matt, If you check out p. 31 there is a very important rule called "Powerful Foe". Basically, if the monster/NPC's HD (that is, their level) is higher than the PCs, then you *add* the difference to the PC's roll when making attribute tests, attacking, defending, etc. So if the PC is first level (HD 1) and the dragon is level 8 (HD 8), then the PC would add +7 to his attempt to roll under the relevant stat. Makes quite a difference! So yes, monster level compared to PC level really matters.

Additionally, monsters may have special abilities that further differentiate monsters of the same HD, like Slippery, Stubborn, or Armored. While most special abilities in the sample monsters are more offensive or utility than defensive, see the Hobgoblin Bully, Harlequin Assassin, Giant Elementalist, Giant Chieftain, etc. for other ways different monsters may be harder/easier to harm.

How do monsters defend against spells? The book mentions that characters can use attributes to defend against some magic, but what about monsters? The attribute test for memorized spells looks like it is made after spell effects are resolved. Does a cloud kill automatically work against that wyrm dragon?

Hey this is real rad! Just want to chime in with some other folks in the discussion and say that a PG version without the topless wizard would be great. I mostly play games with co-workers at the office and a no-nipple version would short circuit some awkward conversations!

How do I print the GM screen to make it look pretty?

Long story short— I cut a piece of poster board to Legal Size (14 inches X 8.5 inches) and printed the GM screen double-sided. After laminating, I scored the fold lines with something equivalent to a bone folder and folded. It's approximately 6 3/4 X 13 3/4 inches, which works just fine for me.
But I'm sure you've already printed it by now.

Just bought the game in pdf. The Prayer and spellbook format is meant for printing or for reading in cellphones?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
