KNAVE is a rules toolkit by the creator of Maze Rats and The Alchemist's Repose for running old school fantasy RPGs without classes. Features include:

High compatibility with OSR games. If you have a library of OSR bestiaries, adventure and spell books, little or no conversion is needed to use them with Knave.

Fast to teach, easy to run. If you are introducing a group of new players to OSR games, Knave allows them to make characters and understand all the rules in minutes.

No classes. Every PC is a Knave, a tomb-raiding, adventure-seeking ne’er-do-well who wields a spell book just as easily as a blade. This is an ideal system for players who like to switch up their character’s focus from time to time and don’t like being pigeonholed. A PC’s role in the party is determined largely by the equipment they carry.

Abilities are king. All d20 rolls use the six standard abilities. The way that ability scores and bonuses work has also been cleaned up, rationalized, and made consistent with how other systems like armor work.

Optional player-facing rolls. Knave easily accommodates referees who want the players to do all the rolling. Switching between the traditional shared-rolling model and players-only rolling can be done effortlessly on the fly.

Copper standard. Knave assumes that the common unit of currency is the copper penny. All item prices use this denomination and approximate actual medieval prices.

A list of 100 level-less spells.

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License: You are free to share and adapt this material for any purpose, including commercially, as long as you give attribution.

Designer commentary. The rules include designer comments explaining why rules were written the way they were, to aid in hacking the game.

Source text. When you purchase this game, you also get a copy of the Word document I used to make it. Edit it to create your own custom Knave ruleset! (You will need the free fonts Crimson Text and Sebaldus-Gotisch to display it properly).

I just want to congratulate Ben on a superb piece of work. It is concise, very playable, with a lot of attention to layout. This is by far the best small price purchase I've had on Drive thru RPG.

To the Creator: Is there anyway to put up a PDF of the Character sheet you showed in your review? A PWYW of it for us players? Thanks.

I think something's up with this product. I bought it (even though I'm a Patreon member) to leave a review and it won't let me post one. Is there a time limit of some kind that I need to wait?

Problem resolved itself. I think there was some kind of time limit after all. Probably to prevent bots or something

I acquired Knave through joining Questing Beast's Patreon account as a paying supporter, so I cannot leave an official review on DTRPG, so I am leaving my comment hear. Knave is a really clever, creative, highly adaptable game that can easily be used with any OSR campaign. A lot of thought and play testing went into the final product. It is an excellent value. (And for the "cheapies" out there, yes, it is 7 pages, but it is 7 pages of dense quality content that was methodically created over a long period of time with a good amount of player community input. This is not something that was thrown together. I have made a lot of purchases on DTRPG and spent more money on products that offered more pages but gave me less quality content--a high page does not mean you get high value).

Is the 6 page preview the whole game?

I can't write a review here because I acquired Knave via Questing Beast's Patreon. I'll put my review here.

Knave is my favorite system for
1. Running a one-shot with full OSR adventure compatibility.
2. Running games for newbies and those who are intimidated by crunchy rules with full OSR
compatibility.
(Note: Into the Odd is my alternate favorite for both of the above when I'm creating most of the content myself (with lots of help from Chris McDowall's fantastic blog, which is a great resource even if you don't run his game.)

It would be excellent as a primary system, even for running a gigantic campaign in, but I happen to already be using the GLOG for that.

* Knave has one of my favorite spell lists ever. Wonder and Wickedness is a better cohesive list
of level-less spells, but the one in Knave is great if you want short, simple spells and don't
want spell schools.

* Knave does not have classes. It does have a very limiting...See more

It looks good, from the sample, my biggest issue keeping me from buying it is page count and price: I can't justify spending almost 3 dollars ( soon 4 dollars) on 7 pages.

That seems perfectly reasonable, but let me explain what you're paying for. Ben found a way to make a BETTER OSR game than many of the larger books fit into 7 pages so you don't have to work as hard to have an excellent B/X-like experience. It's light, but it has everything you need, and no one else has done this so well before without removing compatibility with other products/blog posts/etc.

And if you find yourself wanting anything that's not there, it's incredibly easy to alter to suit your purposes. I've been posting lots of ways to do that here: https://buildingsarepeople.blogspot.com/2018/08/knave-mini-review-hacks-additions-and.html

Hi, this is a great basic rules toolkit. It is simple, elegant and efficient. If you want to introduce somebody to adventure roleplaying games is probably one of the best options out there. I will be using it as the basis of my own games and adding non-numerical talents and other things that my gaming group likes.

Idea for alternate alignment:

Good, VAIN, Evil.
Vanity covers a lot of ground and clarifies what is meant by "neutral."

I feel that Law and Chaos should be cosmic||magical forces, not alignments.
Balancing them is something that mortals attempt, and the general result of existence.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
