Welcome to VDP's Inaugural release: Fighting Maneuvers!

This document contains a variant mechanic for 5th Edition, that replaces the Fighting Styles class feature (present on the Fighter, Paladin, and Ranger) with a list of Maneuvers that can be performed.

These maneuvers are inspired by, and many are reworked from the Player's Handbook Battlemaster archetype for the Fighter. As a result, the mechanics presented here are not compatible with the Battlemaster but I think you'll find yourself enjoying them more!

Also included is a Revised Champion archetype, taking the Player's Handbook Champion and giving it an upgraded toolset; as well as a set of two unique maneuvers granted to many of the official Fighter archetypes.

Version 1.2

I've added the Tactician, a replacement archetype for the missing Battlemaster.

In addition, the Parry, Rapid Fire, and Twin Strike maneuvers have had minor alterations made for balance reasons. The Twin Strike maneuver was too weak; and the Rapid Fire maneuver now functions with Thrown weapons. Parry has been made to work with any not-heavy weapon as long as you are not wielding a shield as well.

This may seem like a dumb question, but is twin strike intended to be able to be used with two-weapon fighting? IE: you are wielding two short swords, as an action you twin strike for 2d6 + DEX damage and as a bonus action you use two weapon fighting to make an extra attack for 1d6 damage.

No, it's a replacement for the BA from TWFing.

So without this maneuver, you can make a BA to attack with one shortsword for 1d6.

With the maneuver, you make a BA to attack with both shortswords for 2d6 (you don't add mod to damage)

It's actually a touch weak, compared to TWF Fighting Style. It's nice because if you have two magic weapons, you get both effects, but stock it's a bit behind. I have machinations for an improvement here.

Never a dumb question though!

I love the options you have given to martial classes with this release. That being said I disagree with your recommendation that these replace the fighting style feature. The fighting style feature is intended to add a mechanical bonus to a specific style of play for the fighter, ranger and paladin. Your options are power null meaning that while they represent an additional option during combat they do not add any extra power to the combatant. Instead I would just grant these options to those classes an not replace fighting styles with them. Additionally while it dose give fighters more options I dont think it really steps on the battle masters toes since each of your maneuvers has an added cost or limmitation to it and doesn't add the superiority dice.

Also I was wounded your sweeping attack dose not mention that it dose not add the strength modifier to the damage like volley dose. I assume this was an oversight. Also the first use of the word frightened for meaning attack(?) Is misspelled. ...See more

Hi there, thanks for your comments.

There is another document by me but not published under VDP called the Variant Fighter. It adds maneuvers on top of fighting styles and has been circulated and playtested throughout the r/UnearthedArcana and Discord of Many Things communities for just over a year now.

The main thing that came back from countless examples of playtesting was "Adding maneuvers without removing anything adds too much power to the Fighter."

Fighting Styles are static bonuses; and while they are powerful, feel lacklustre and boring. By replacing them with these maneuvers, you get a more engaged player.

And while yes, any one maneuver doesn't equate to a full fighting style (except Shield Block, which is just Protection fighting style); you get four of these maneuvers as a Fighter.

When I ordered this, there was no download link in the order. When I went back in to DriveThruRPG and called up the title, there was a link there. The link isn't being sent with the orders though...
