Conrad's Fantasy

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fantasy Free-Style Role-Play™, where every character is a magic and sword wielding hero. Play with a neutral Ref, sometimes running his own player character. Advancement of levels with Ignoble system of nine tasks. Advantage phase and Responsive phase combat system. Free-style magic of breaking the laws of the universe and often suffering the consequences. Quick & Dirty combat events for dragon battles. Complete rules as published at LA conventions in 1990. Have fun. Thanks to everyone who still loves and remembers this game fondly. I hope new referees and players will equally enjoy this bit of nostalgia, yet way ahead in innovation. Style Three, Ideas Five.

I highly recommend picking up SCUTAGE from Better Games to add to your Barony Experience. Nice elegant rules for adding estate / domain gaming to your character / group.

I still love this as it is more portable and generic than Chronicles of the Outlands.
However Chronicles of the Outlands does play easier and smoother.

Another point worth mentioning, the game uses a pretty novel approach to initiative.

Rather than going through the book keeping tedium of rolling a d20 for initiative for each player and adding your height, weight, boot size, and weapon factor to get a number from 1 to 83,000 and then ranking them top to bottom. Inserting in the rolls for the bad dudes with the associated look-ups and then counting down like being in the DMV, their are only three phases.

They are called Advantage, Monsters, and Response. But, could really be called "Going First" or "Going Last". And, rather than dicing for this, the player gets to choose where he (or she) wants to act.

By going in the Advantage phase (or going first) the character hits the monster before he can strike. Damage tends to be a bit lighter but not much. Then, the foes strike. But, there is more.

Those who waited for the Response round (or go last) can strike the baddies for more damage, prep...See more

Clarification on the Tarot:

The primary action is "Conrad's Fantasy Role Play" or as it was later edited "Rogue Swords of the Empire" were driven by 2 die 8. Because the way the skills worked, they were driven by the dice.

The Designing Scenarios and Designing Encounters books use the Tarot to resolve the Missions and Encounters.

Players rolled dice. The Referee generates the action with the Tarot.

The mechanic for the players was to describe the difficulty of the task, Simple, Difficult, Tasking and rolling dice with your adds to determine if the result was Successful, Mixed, Failed of Mishap. Just 2 die 8 to resolve actions. (Hey, I like 20 siders like the next guy but sometimes, a neat bell shaped distribution is what you crave.)

I think Rogue Swords (as the cool peeps call it) included an "Overkill" result which somehow was not always good.

The players get some nice combos and don't have to focus...See more

"Editing a copy of Cutlass which I can sell here."

Awesome, thank you!

If I had to go with the other format I would, but I'm not sure how well it works to print from that. Page counts seem much higher.
I have all your other titles here printed out for easier use except for Stuff o' Legends, of which I just noticed now.

Cheers!

George, having had my Space Gamer/ Fantasy Gamer issues stolen years ago, it was a pleasant surprise to see Conrad's Fantasy (and, now, more Free- Style Role-play games) here on dritvethrurpg/rpgnow

I do have a few questions for you.
1) I picked up Conrad's Fantasy which I, originally, owned as Rogue Swords of the Empire in Space Gamer/ Fantasy Gamer. Is my memory correct that Rogue Swords replaced the use of tarot cards with either 2d8 rolls or playing cards? If my recollection is not faulty, what other changes were made other than the name for the magazine version?

2) Will Villains Finish First be released here in pdf ? I seem to recall it being a separate booklet in Avengers of Justice and, then, a separate issue from Good Guys Finish Last when published in Space Gamer/ Fantasy Gamer.

3) Are Where Fools Dare to Dread and Arabian Sea Tales full reprints of the respective Space Gamer/ Fantasy Gamer magazine issues in which they appeared?

Finally,...See more

Any changes to Rogue Swords I'd like to think were incidental. If the Tarot was omitted, it was because the deck was facing some backlash for its association with demons, magic and such. I've been using a Tarot to game for forty years, and I have not yet turned into a newt? The dog did, but he doesn't count.

The Conrad's Fantasy version is poorly edited, perhaps, but I think has better mechanics. I don't own a copy of SG#2 to make a scan. But the original HUGO w/ first draft of Conrad's Fantasy will also be up here soon (for nostalgic giggles?)

Villains coming. Of all the comic book hero play, it's my favorite. The bad guys have to self moderate even more than the Good Guys. I find that more challenging.

No, the magazines are not full reprints (scans). The authors would retain rights to their articles. I wasn't going to track them all down and get permissions. I included the covers on the game releases for reference (they are pretty). Just the games and scenarios, which I...See more

Thanks for the interest. Crimson Cutlass is up on a competing platform. I'll not list that competitor here. What I'm seeing of DriveThru is making me wonder if a move for Cutlass may occur. Cutlass is my favorite game for genre and mechanics. (I still run a weekly game.) More later for Pyrate role-play.

Era Ten is coming. GenCon staffing has put a small delay on uploads. Forgive me that I haven't done any of this much, much earlier. I am now officially retired and have a luxury of time. Even using a scanner makes me cuss; copies of the original texts are hard to find. Data was lost seven times over.

I am amazed that rpg is still of any interest. I thought it was a one-generation idea. As an old grognard, I'm slow to take advice, even good advice. My writing partner, Conrad, finally convinced me that our stuff from the nineties needs a home. I'm impressed by DriveThru and the fans here. Makes me hate the internet a bit less.

Perhaps a new product. Your encouragement is blessed...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
