Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron (5e)

Eberron was born in 2002 when Wizards of the Coast launched a worldwide search for a new campaign setting.

Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron brings the eponymous campaign setting to the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons. This 175 page book gives you everything you need to create an Eberron story or character, exploring the core themes of the setting and the rules to implement them in fifth edition. It includes an overview of Khorvaire and the fantastic city of Sharn, along with a host of background ideas and story hooks.

Playtest material includes the unique races of Eberron, the mystical dragonmarks (including greater dragonmarks and aberrant dragonmarks), and new magic items; this is a living document, and this content will evolve and be updated in response to feedback.

Want to create and publish your own Eberron PDFs?

The Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron can serve as your jumping off point to create your own monsters, adventure modules, and other tabletop content set within Eberron and put it up for sale on the Dungeon Masters Guild.

Probably once finished it has been talked about on the FG forums.

There was also talking of a more slowly updated mod that would have the content.

Is there anywhere official to submit document errata (editing, not mechanics) for the Wayfinder's Guide?

I have a Question Dose the Fighter and Rangers Fighting Style Defense work with the integrated protection of the warforged

As written, no, but it probably should.

Per Keith I'm pretty sure it does--Darkwood core is 'unarmored' so Defense style doesn't work, but the other types are considered 'armored' for the purposes of such features.

Joshua M August 15, 2018 10:09 pm UTC
They do not, as you cannot gain benefits from wearing armor. And the AC bonus is a benefit from wearing armor.

I was surprised with the quality of this book. I know none of it is AL legal yet and Artificer isn't even in the book right now, but it has everything you need to run either a game in Eberron or simply one that's Eberron inspired. I think my single biggest surprise was actually including an adventure generator as well as the random encounter for the different levels of city streets. Finally if you're on the fence about getting this and are interested in crafting in 5e this book finally puts in the missing link that wasn't in Xanathars guide and lets character design magic item recipes from scratch providing a much needed missing piece to the current item creation rules.

I'm holding out until they put in the Artificer Class in there.

I'm curious to see if they incorporate some of the fluff from DDO. I was out of the hobby for several years but discovered Eberron from DDO. The stuff they did for House Phiarlan was gold.

Stuff like that isn't really going to included I don't think. If you check out Keith's blog you'll get a good idea of the stuff he wants to focus on.

The big thing I'm excited for are the stuff on the planes he's gonna be doing. I've always loved the planes of Eberron, and have always wished for buckets of materials on them.

Thankfully, with the DM's guild setup. He can actually publish a book for each plane!

This product is great. I have been waiting for 5e Eberron material since launch. Keith Baker has found a way to introduce new players to the world of Eberron while still giving those who have been playing in Eberron since its creation new perspectives. Good stuff. The idea of making dragonmarks subraces or variant races was particularly inspired.

I am loving this product so far. I am pestering everyone about starting a few campaigns in Eberron.
I am looking for the "official" way to give feedback about this product.
I know there will be surveys related to the playtest, but I am talking about feedback on content. I don't have the document in front of me right now, but as I was reading it last night I found some things were missing, or not explained. For example, when giving the abilities for dragonmarks, it does not say what the save DC for some is (I think this is the case for the spells for the dragonmark of the storm).
There are a couple things like that that I noticed, and a bunch of typos, and I am not sure how to "report" them.

The ability scores that the DCs are based on are noted in the Greater Dragonmarks table (Charisma for Storm), and all save DCs are standardized in this edition of 8 + proficiency + ability modifier. You are right in that the race does not include this, though.

I, too, wish to report feedback, as there's a couple things that feel off about the mechanics. One of which is the magic item schema creation; it lists that your ability modifier + appropriate skill must reach a certain threshold, but it doesn't describe whether a Cleric must have an Intelligence + Religion or a Wisdom + Religion modifier this high.

Then there are the balance issues of House Valadis getting the short end of the Greater Dragonmark and race sticks (two weak spells, 2nd and 4th level, on long rest? When Kundarak gets useful 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and Storm gets two very powerful 5th levels?) and Warforged Juggernauts not really having any features other than Strength increase. The question of whether these will ever be...See more

Pretty cool. Regarding the Warforged. Could we see stats for Battlefists and Armblades in this document? What about integrated shields? Also, it would make sense to have a Soldier build in addition to the Skirmisher and Juggernaut. I really like the rules for Docents. I also like the rules for shifting between the various armoured states... although it seems a bit unrealistic. I do appreciate that it's Eberron and magic is everywhere, but perhaps just a bit more descriptive fluff to explain how they do it.

It would be interesting to see rules for Undead as well from Karrnath.

Lots of good stuff happening here. All in all a great start. I look forward to seeing where the document goes.

I don't have the book in front of me, but I do know that the Armblade can be any Melee weapon. That's why it doesn't have separate stats listed.

For those who are interested and maybe haven't found it yet, Keith Baker has a FAQ up about this product.

I'm enjoying WGTE. There are things about previous editions that just didn't click with me, and this helps smooth those questions/concerns over and actually get me excited to run this as my next campaign. Looking forward to more Eberron goodies and the eventual PoD option.

If you've read a lot of the 3.5 information, it wont give you a ton of new lore, but one of my favorite parts of it is that I find it does a better job helping you get a sense for what life might be like for a player character. I'm going to be using it with my group for sure. Beyond the UA races being in there, there's a revision to the way dragonmark's work, each now being a subrace. There's now a Greater Dragonmark feat that gives more powerful abilities, but a person can start at level 1 with a mark (except for Aberrants, which is still a feat).
Customer avatar
Peter L August 01, 2018 3:05 pm UTC
I really appreciate you breaking it down. I have the 3.5 books so the appeal for me would have been a complete update of that material. I love the setting, but those differences you mentioned aren't enough for me to want to pay for the product--that could change with later iterations, of course.

I know Mark N already replied to you, but let me give my take on it. Some of it is a retread of the existing stuff, but about 50% of it is "new", at least if you're counting official sources.

However, the vast majority of the new content actually comes directly from years worth of posts on his blog. So if you've been reading every scrap of Eberron info for the past decade, you're only going to find a few new things. It's wonderful to have all of it in one place though, and not have to dig through hundreds of blog posts.

Oh yeah, and most of the crunch is new, except for a few things like item creation and whatnot.

Really wish it included some of the rituals the house uses to keep the economy afloat though.

I think I like the tables of random things that can happen in Sharn the most. Having about a page dedicated to each nation and what it means to be a character from there is also very helpful. I'd love some sort of expansion on Aberrant Dragonmarks, though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
