CAPERS RPG

It's the 1920s Prohibition era in the United States. Alcohol is illegal. Organized crime grows at an unprecedented rate as gangsters get rich selling hooch to a thirsty populace. Law enforcement struggles to keep up with an understaffed and underfunded Bureau of Prohibition.

You are one of a handful of people who have been gifted with super-powers!

Will you use your abilities to build a criminal empire as a super-powered gangster? Or will you focus your powers to serve the law and bring these criminals to justice?

All-in-One Game

This is an all-in-one game book with full rules for players and GMs. Character creation. Full rules. GM guidelines. Setting information and several backdrop cities. NPCs. Story Ideas. And more!

This game uses decks of playing cards rather than dice. Each player and the GM uses their own deck of standard playing cards with two jokers.

Could this and the other Capers games be played *without* super powers? In short, I’m asking if the game system is robust enough to model a 1920’s game of heroic action (think Indiana Jones; yes, I know he’s in the 1930’s) or does it fall flat unless the action is superheroic.

The core rules includes info on playing what's called an Exceptional, which are tougher and have some cool abilities, but don't have superpowers. Normal people are called Regulars, and they're weaker, easier to hurt/kill. The game system uses six traits and about 20 skills and supports task resolution for all sorts of things. Superpowers are just one part of it.

(In fact, the superpowers are more "street level" anyways, so it's not indestructible people and mind controlling whole neighborhoods or anything like that.)

Noir and Offworld have monster stuff. Covert has chase rules and gadgets.

I bought the deluxe hardback, so can't review here, and I haven't played it yet, but I will say this looks to be great supers system where I finally get to use my classy deck of cards.

The rules are quite simple (using a push your luck mechanism, giving the player some say if they'd find a "success, but..." acceptable), but pack enough crunch to satisfy most. Sadly, the 1920s just ain't my bag, baby, eben in this awesome alternate world. So it's fortunate there are also 40s Noire, and 60s Spy supplements which better fit the level of tech I want to play in. There's another supplement about CAPES IN SPAAAAACE, which looks interesting but haven't picked up yet.

Regardless of setting, you'll get a heap of history and mission starts, and interesting people to meet and pummel, alternate realities to this alternate history, and robots!

If you're deciding on the standard colour here or deluxe, go for the deluxe. Not only is the colour richer (comparing the deluxe core...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
