Mothership is a sci-fi horror roleplaying game where you and your crew try to survive in the most inhospitable environment in the universe: outer space! You'll excavate dangerous derelict spacecraft, explore strange unknown worlds, exterminate hostile alien life, and examine the horrors that encroach upon your every move. Choose from one of four classes:

  • Teamsters, the rough and tumble workers. More versatile at first level, Teamsters can be anything from engineers, to pilots, to asteroid miners. If Ripley from Aliens is your hero, then you'll want to play a Teamster.
  • Scientists, doctors, researches or anyone who wants to slice open aliens (or infected crew members) with a scalpel. Become an expert in genetics or xenobiology - or protect your crew from deadly viruses.
  • Androids are an exciting and terrifying addition to any crew. Powerful due to their supreme intellect, speed, and near-immunity to fear, they tend to unnerve other crew members with their cold inhumanity.
  • Marines are here to shoot bugs and chew bubblegum. They're handy in a fight, and better when grouped together, but be wary when a marine panics because it could spell doom for the rest of your crew.

Mothership is actively in development, and this is a beta release. There will be limited print releases of the beta at most major conventions (Origins, Gen Con, BGGCon).

Looking for an adventure to run? We just released the first adventure for Mothership, Dead Planet, and it's awesome. You can check it out (along with a preview) here.

This is effectively the core rulebook, though there is going to be a Kickstarter sometime SOON(tm) for a complete boxed set with Warden facing rules and more. But if you just want to play, you only really need this book.

POD please :)

PoD soon please! It's way too expensive to ship the book via USPS to Canada--$17 is the least expensive shipping option--and I'd love a physical copy!

Maybe you could print out the PDF at Staples (or the Canadian equivalent)?
Then grab a report binder from the file/folder aisle.
A quick check showed a DuraClip Slide Locking Report Cover from Staples (will hold 60 pages, and averages out to $3 USD each).
Printing at Staples is $0.15 USD/pg. So, $6.60 for printing 44 pages, plus a $3 cover puts you in business for just under $10 USD.
Thinking about doing that on the way home from work now that I've found that temporary solution...

fyi- This idea got me really curious, so I kept researching and found that OfficeDepot will also do a printing of your choice in book/manual format, different bindings (yes, even spiral!) for about $12 USD.

I have had issues printing copyrighted or PDF material at various print shops before.
And each time, the person didn't care that I may have had permission to print.

Hi, Really enjoying the game so far, but I am planning to run a long-ish campaign and I'm a bit unsure about the economy e.g. Basic equipment like guns and armor cost about $1000 each. The recommended monthly salary for a Marine is $600. The cost of 1 unit of ship fuel (consumed in 1 day) is $10 000. If your ship takes 1 point of damage, it costs $100 000 to repair it. In a one-shot game, the price of items never comes up. In a long term game, money becomes quite important. What is a fair reward for missions completed? Is it tens of thousands of credits? Or millions? Why should I hire this team of 4 for $60 000 when the same amount would buy be 100 marines for a month. After being paid for one job completed, a party could be fully equipped in the best monster fighting gear available, because the total cost of this was about the same as 1 days fuel. Again this looks like an amazing game, sorry if I'm being ignorant. Thanks.

Are you going to do Print on Demand any time soon? I'd like a physical copy but doubt I'm going to make another convention before the heat death of the universe, and the shipping costs on copies ordered from the Tuesday Knight Games site to the UK are horrific.

It's a good rule!
But there are some mistakes in the data that I do not understand.

The description in the weapon list(pdf page2) and the weapon/equipment description(pdf page15-21) is different, but which is correct?

e.g. Frag Grenade, Crowbar

It's not entirely a complaint, but I do question why you decided on a few of your dice rolling mechanics:

Based on what I read, the system is generally a percentile driven roll-under system. ( similar to the Basic Roleplaying system )
But, then you deviate in a couple of places:

- Opposed Checks want you to roll under, but roll high. Why not just stick with lower-is-better as with the rest of the rolls ?
- Stat Checks are roll under
- Skill Checks are roll under
- Saves are roll under or equal.

Just wondering why the variations came in?

Roll under vs roll under or equal only introduces a 1% different ( but introduces another complexity to remember )

And with opposed rolls, I expect you chose under-but-high-wins to show "more skill should win more often" ... but that's already inherent in the chance the opponent would succeed at all ( 10% vs 40% ) ... and again, introduces a deviation. Wouldn't just "lowest...See more

I'm new to Mothership, but in d% the opposed check having to roll lower than skill, but higher than the opponent is to show the advantage of training in skills. BRP has had a few ways of handling opposed rolls over the editions, but I do think this is the easiest way to handle it.

Character 1 has a skill of 30% and Character 2 has a skill 50%. Character 2 has a huge advantage of being able to roll between 31-50 still rolling under their skill and at a higher level than Character 1 could ever roll.

If it was just roll the lowest they both have an equal chance of rolling under 30% and Character 2 higher skill level isn't as much of an advantage.

I understand the choice, but that doesn't change what I was stating/questioning about the overall roll mechanics.

I come here hoping my question gets answered and find the description still shows this is in beta. Is it really still in beta?

There's some super quality stuff here... and I know it's in "space" where everything is black... but holy crap, guys... lay off the super black pages for PDFs you expect people to print.

This is nuts.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
