Mothership is a sci-fi horror roleplaying game where you and your crew try to survive in the most inhospitable environment in the universe: outer space! You'll excavate dangerous derelict spacecraft, explore strange unknown worlds, exterminate hostile alien life, and examine the horrors that encroach upon your every move. Choose from one of four classes:

  • Teamsters, the rough and tumble workers. More versatile at first level, Teamsters can be anything from engineers, to pilots, to asteroid miners. If Ripley from Aliens is your hero, then you'll want to play a Teamster.
  • Scientists, doctors, researches or anyone who wants to slice open aliens (or infected crew members) with a scalpel. Become an expert in genetics or xenobiology - or protect your crew from deadly viruses.
  • Androids are an exciting and terrifying addition to any crew. Powerful due to their supreme intellect, speed, and near-immunity to fear, they tend to unnerve other crew members with their cold inhumanity.
  • Marines are here to shoot bugs and chew bubblegum. They're handy in a fight, and better when grouped together, but be wary when a marine panics because it could spell doom for the rest of your crew.

Mothership is actively in development, and this is a beta release. There will be limited print releases of the beta at most major conventions (Origins, Gen Con, BGGCon).

Looking for an adventure to run? We just released the first adventure for Mothership, Dead Planet, and it's awesome. You can check it out (along with a preview) here.

It's not entirely a complaint, but I do question why you decided on a few of your dice rolling mechanics:

Based on what I read, the system is generally a percentile driven roll-under system. ( similar to the Basic Roleplaying system )
But, then you deviate in a couple of places:

- Opposed Checks want you to roll under, but roll high. Why not just stick with lower-is-better as with the rest of the rolls ?
- Stat Checks are roll under
- Skill Checks are roll under
- Saves are roll under or equal.

Just wondering why the variations came in?

Roll under vs roll under or equal only introduces a 1% different ( but introduces another complexity to remember )

And with opposed rolls, I expect you chose under-but-high-wins to show "more skill should win more often" ... but that's already inherent in the chance the opponent would succeed at all ( 10% vs 40% ) ... and again, introduces a deviation. Wouldn't just "lowest...See more

I come here hoping my question gets answered and find the description still shows this is in beta. Is it really still in beta?

There's some super quality stuff here... and I know it's in "space" where everything is black... but holy crap, guys... lay off the super black pages for PDFs you expect people to print.

This is nuts.

Have you considered a printer-friendly version where pages 2, 3, 36 and 37 are not white on black? That is a lot of ink being used up there!
Rules look good...

Very nice, but there is so much black ink throughout the book, a Print on Demand option would have been nice.

I'm having a issue: If i open the pdf using Chrome it's allright, but if i open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader it has some faults, like page 5 is empty and some images overstep the writings. It's me or the file? Already tried to download it again but no changes, and the program works fine with other pdf documents.

This game is dripping with theme. It is so good! The system is simple and straightforward, while still including thematic elements (such as androids unnerve people and give disadvantage to checks while around them). It is famous for its amazing layout which I found difficult for purposes of reading straight through (every sentence felt super concentrated with information), but was perfect for when I needed to look something up at the table.

If I had to give a critiscism I would say the XP and leveling system would need more polish, but that is something you can easily houserule away.

I am really looking forward to all future products in this series and will be playing Mothership for a long time to come.

Buy the game you will not regret it!

Some errata

Page 8. Section 8.3:

"If all of a ship’s Life Support modules are destroyed then divide the ship’s current hull subtract 1d10 and then divide by the number of living humans onboard".

So, "divide the ship's current hull..." by what?

Page 8. Section 8.3:

"If more less than half of the original oxygen remains".

It should say, of course, "If less than".

It would be nice to see an update to the PDF.

Any chance of buying the print edition from within the UK? My inkjet printer took one look at all that black and ran off.

Two players meaning a Warden and one player? Or a Warden and two players? The answer is yes regardless, though you'll want to give the player some mercenaries!

So I skimmed the discussions here but didn't see anything related to my inquiry.

Is there maybe a place to report inconsistencies, errors, or typos? Some developers use Discord as a place to connect with their fans as well as receive feedback, maybe you guys have something like that? (of which I'm unaware)

You might want to change the mechanic of opposing rolls, as it is an exception to the general mechanics of rolling under a given score with a high margin, e.g. healing.
The change would read something like this:

The side that underrolls with the highest margin wins.

Thus the player with the better value would still have the better probability of winning and all dice rolls would use the same mechanics.

A quick question. I understand that the print copies of this that are still available are limited. At least that's the way I understand it. Are there plans to reprint Mothership and Dead Plant once the remaining stock is sold, or from that point forward is PDF going to be the only way to get it for the foreseeable future?

Some discrepancies I found in the text:
1) On page 15 the Vacsuit is listed as having Oxygen for 12 hours, 6 under stressful activity. The Oxygen Tank for the vacsuit under equipment (page 17) lists that as 12/4
2) On 26.3 is stated that you start with 1 Resolve, but the character sheet at the end of the book has a big "starts at 0" under Resolve
3) On page 29, under Fuel there is "Every jump requires double the fuel of the jump (Jump 2 = 4 Fuel)" but on 27.6: "Jump require fuel equal to the jump (so a Jump
2 requires 2 units of fuel)."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
