Tomes of Terror

The lessons of Cthulhu 101 are long Overdue because Manuscripts Don’t Burn and Rare Finds could mean The Calling is at hand.

Four rare and dangerous occult tomes, The Necronomicon, Cultes Des Goules, The Book of Eibon and The Revelations of Glaaki Vol IV, have been stolen from the Jeremiah Orne Library on the Miskatonic University campus. Can the investigators retrieve the books before powerful mythos forces use them to summon horrors and unleash hell on Arkham?

Over 100 pages of multiple scenarios, illustrations and player handouts.

Full length review by Pookie, creator and host of "Reviews from R'lyeh", is available here:

"Tomes of Terror: A Quest for Forbidden Knowledge is a challenging investigation with the players and their investigators having to work through a multitude of clues, witnesses, and suspects. It presents these in an interesting structure of parallel investigations which although they do exacerbate the challenge, they also serve to give the campaign a sophisticated, more modern feel. Overall, Tomes of Terror: A Quest for Forbidden Knowledge is a solid mini-campaign worth downloading from the Miskatonic Repository." - Pookie, Reviews from R'lyeh

This is a lovingly and skillfully made campaign that I think is worth much more than the price asked. The handouts are especially well made, and the campaign is fun to read. Some positions are not my cup of tea, but when I run this campaign I can simply change those without problems: player character are expected to die easily and often; and the author is VERY wary mythos tomes. But then styles vary. This is a full length campain with great entertainment value for a very low price, and hereby highly recommended.

Hey! After reading the review on blogspot i'm feeling very interested in your book. The main group i keep for plays a modern day Pulp Cthulhu at the university we all attend. How would this convert to pulp? and would it be playable in a modern day setting that is not Miskatonic U/Arkham, but instead a different college town and it's surrounding areas?

Hi Jake,
Thank you for your post. ToT is set in the modern era (it also contains guidance on converting the scenarios to the classic 1920s period) so your challenge will be in moving it away from the Arkham setting - I would recommend you read through the campaign and assign + annotate the alternative location of each of the antagonists/NPCs. You will also need to swap out all Arkham location references to your setting's equivalents. Hope that helps. I would love to hear how it goes so please write a review or leave an Obsidian link if you can spare the time. All the best, Kev

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
