The Exodus System

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The Exodus System takes classic OSR games and adds modern innovations. This book is suitable for playing sci-fi, fantasy, and all sorts of other genres. It takes inspiration from such other systms as Savage Worlds and the Cypher System.

For Players:

-Fast Character Creation: Get a PC made in minutes

-Versatile Options: Every character is useful at something, both in and out of combat

-Create-a-Class: Choose a Party Role, a Combat Role, and two Flavors and you've got your custom class.

-Support for Creativity: Do you want your Performer who focuses on Companions to be able to summon eidolons of pure sound? Go for it!

For GMs:

-Low-Prep Gaming: Generators for everything from quests to items, dungeons, enemies and more let you come up with campaigns on the fly. All of the tables for each generator are laid out conveniently and designed to resolve with one throw of the dice.

-Compatible with OSR Modules: Pretty much any any adventure whose NPCs use HD in their stat blocks you can run using the Exodus System.

-Upcoming Support: We've got lots of material in the pipeline. New monsters, new quests, and more.

For Publishers:

-Easy NPC Stat Blocks: No need to calculate that birdman's "Use Rope" skill. NPC blocks are compact and take seconds to write up.

-Genre-Free: Use this setting to support anything from giant mecha to medieval pulp and anything in between.

Is this 100% the same content as your SRD (sans art and graphic design of course)?

Mostly. There is a small bit at the end with a sample encounter sheet. There might also be a bit of different wording in a couple tables in the GM section, but I think that is it.

To the publisher: Good on you for donating the proceeds to RAINN. They do immensely important work.

I like the system quite a lot, but I'm missing magic. Do you think the magic from TBH or other OSR games would port over easily? And should magic be a "flavor," a "party role," or a "combat role"?

Glad you like it! TBH is pretty much my favorite OSR system for fast play. I haven't had a look at the second edition yet, and in my home games I run a different style. Several of the flavors are meant to approximate the effects of magic or super powers, including Energy, Elements, Nature, Mutation and a few others.

Magic would definitely be a flavor, but it would be affected by your character roles. So a Face with Performance makes a handy Bard. A controller with Energy and Companions is a good build for a Summoner. A Tank Explorer with Nature and maybe Energy or Elements makes a fine Druid. The rules explicitly tell the GM to allow players to combine their Flavors into new effects. Like the summoner example. Let your player say that the companions that he summons are made out of energy.

Or if a PC had Companions and Nature they could be more or less completely mundane, with the companions representing a hired retinue and the nature powers being just a plantlike nature. But if the player...See more

Oh, I see! That makes sense. I think I was just reading it expecting Vancian-style spellcasting, but I don't even particularly like it. I can tell that your way would replicate the effects without the need for all the book-keeping! Sorry about that. I didn't sleep much last night, but I was excited to read the game right away.

I was specifically looking for:

1) a type of seer/oracle/shaman... but I think your "Awareness" flavor actually does what I was looking for if I re-skin it to call the abilities magical, like you were saying.

2) A knight, but the "Noble" flavor gets fairly close.

3) A cleric.

Thank you for such the quick response! I like your game a whole lot, and I encourage everyone else to try it.

Hey, no worries. So several of the flavors are there to emulate class features that you'd find in Pathfinder. I'm not a big fan of Pathfinder because it's too much bookkeeping for what I want to do, and I'm not a fan of occult themes in my fantasy. What I do love about Pathfinder is that the PCs get these awesome abilities at level 20.

I also like how each class is essentially two tracks of different abilities, like eidolons and evolution for summoners, and that by swapping them out you can create new classes. You know, how the Investigator is part gunslinger.

That said, I don't like how much work goes into making your own class in Pathfinder. The Exodus System's chargen takes the style of Pathfinder (and a few other games) and makes it much faster. Pathfinder can take you hours to make one character from a preexisting class if you spend time researchign all of the feats and optimizing them for the level path that you want to take.

In the Exodus system you can get an entire...See more

That's so funny that you would say that, because I do mostly play Pathfinder and simplifying the book-keeping was exactly what I wanted. You've done an EXCELLENT job with both the book-keeping the character creation, which was exactly what I was looking for! I just had to change the way that I was thinking about it. Now that I have, I can't wait to try it!

Oh, well thank you! I'm happy to hear it. You know, I'd be interested in hearing if The Exodus System works for you with Pathfinder modules. You could convert NPCs by using the NPC generator and plugging in their HD. The special abilities might take some adjustment to translate.

Hi, Jacob. Thank you for being so patient. One more question: It seems like you get to pick 12 abilities from your roles, but have only 6 choices (which, admittedly, can be picked more than once.) And you get 5 flavor abilities from 10 choices. Am I reading that right? It seems a little counter-intuitive.

Normal progression is one ability from each Role and Flavor at chargen. There was a typo in the file, but I thought I got it fixed. In a normal game you get to pick one extra ability from either Flavor at ranks 3, 6 and 9. At every level you get to choose one ability from either Role. So you end up with five Flavor abilities and 12 Role at rank 10. The idea is that Flavor abilities are more powerful than Role abilities, and in this way you can choose to be a master of one or two things, or to generalize among your abilities. Note that there's the option for "Heroic" play, where you get one Flavor ability at every level. Lots more power that way.

This sounds interesting. I really just need something to run B/X osr stuff.

Other than the price, what's different from the SRD version of this? Why buy one instead of the other, or both? Less important, how does the new sci-fi SRD compare?

The SRD files for these books our printer friendly. They have no art and are laid out using more generic fonts. You also get a word file that you can edit yourself for hacking at home. This book has really pretty artwork in it from a lot of talented people.

The difference between the Sci-Fi version and this one is that this one is more generic, and probably better suited for fantasy and superhero games. Some of the language in this one is also more geared towards old school RPGs. Liking this one I represent creatures by their HD, but in the Syfy version it's listed as level.

In this book, too there are lists for static difficulties as well as opposed to difficulties, and that is because I wanted to make it as Packer friendly as possible. I wanted everyone to have options for making the system their own. My preference in games is to have everything being opposed roll because it adds more attention, so in the Syfy version I did away with any references to static numbers.

Keith, sorry, I was AFK. I usually reply to comments within 15 minutes. I'm uploading a fix that should work. It's a much smaller file. You'll get an email in probably 10 minutes notifying you. The new file has "SMALLER" in the title.

164 MB and 483 MB files? This could use some trimming :D

I mean my Pathfinder Core Book file (578 pages of text and pictures) has less than 47 MB.

Another thing I would suggest (besides bookmarks) is providing either a printer-friendly version, or else adding layers so we could turn off the ink-hogging layers (such at the page borders) before printing. Thanks :)

That shouldn't be right. If you already paid 6.99 for the main book, and the total price of the bundle is 6.99, you should get everything else in it for free. Are you logged into your account? The one you used to buy this book?

The amount deducted from the bundle price is the cost of the item in the bundle, not its full cost. So, as the bundle price for the main book is $6.49, that's what's knocked off the cost of the bundle.

Looks cool, and I can't wait to play this. I'm confused on one thing. Are the SRD and the core rule book supposed to be identical except the last 2 pages?
Also, I get the same blocks instead of text on my galaxy S5, but it works great on PC.

The SRD (once I updated it), is going to have the same text as the core book. It's for publishers or people who want to print at home. Right now it's missing a couple tables, plus the last few pages, yeah. I added the PRINT file of this book as a download. It's larger, but it uses images as the pages, which means no fonts to deal with.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
